[IC] Universal OS Key Symbol // Poll is live!
« on: Mon, 12 January 2015, 20:34:23 »
POLL IS UP!

Not too long ago, I started an interest check for my colorway called, "RetroBlight", and somewhere along the lines a suggestion was brought up by Elrick and jdcarpe.
So the idea is that we should have a universal logo that would be put in place on every OS key for every keyset.
It could be something related to GeekHack that defines our community, or something really plain and simple like a star.

Here is the conversation:
More
A tiny gripe, but I'd like super/meta keys since I don't use Windows.

Great set!

Frosty, what about just investing in a single ICON to symbolize the Windows, Various OS's and such?

That way, we all know that in that area we aren't morons wanting to see Windows Logo sitting there reminding us constantly that we are using a Windows setup.  Time to finally grow up and mature because we need a UNIVERSAL Logo that sits in that position and lets any user know that it's OS related only.

Sick of paying for extra Windows, Linux and Mac Logo Keys constantly in nearly every Group Buy held here on GH.  Time to finally release an all encompassing ICON that can be applied for every known OS that was ever made or will be made, plus for the poverty stricken give them a cheaper option.  Remember Henry Ford's famous quote back when you can have any colour you want for your brand new car, as long as it was BLACK (something to think about here).
I really like the idea of having a universal logo. However, I have no idea what kind of image could represent this set as it didn't really come from anything special.

Doesn't have to be specific to RetroBlight. It could be used by any and every GB going forward. Something really universal.

So what would you guys like to see replace the OS key for all of our sets?

Here is a list of symbols that could be viable which will be updated periodically.

Perhaps. Although a whole bunch of people don't associate with Cherry, just about all of the sets this would be used on, if not all, would be Cherry boards.

What about the Geekhack smiley face that already exists on a good amount of keysets.

Just kidding.  I'll have to think more.  I do have to say that I hate the star, it reminds me of the horribly tacky star tattoos from the 90s.

I do like the cherry logo that was mentioned.

How about a window. Like four panes. You could even make it a little stylized like this:

Or how about a piece of fruit with a bite out of it?

The one issue with the Cherry logo is that you will need 2 colours on one base colour. This means we have to dye-sub unless we can somehow find someone to do triple-shot.
EDIT: Dye subbing will also majorly restrict colour choices.

Can we bite the windows?

What about the glider symbol? It would be OS independent, as well as forum independent (for GBs wanting to include DT or other forums).

The grid lines would probably be too fine at the scale we are talking (SP has guidelines for it somewhere), but it would still look great with only the dots.

I'm sure if we wanted the grid lines, we could play with the thickness a little.

I have always like the domed windows keys the best. The only acceptable design for a universal os key symbol I have seen in this thread so far is Oobly's super meta, and the cherry symbol idea.. It needs to be something simple I think.

How about something like this?

I threw it together in paint really quickly, but I'm sure someone could make a better version pretty quickly. I figure a monitor with a command line and keyboard is pretty platform neutral and would fit nicely for the gui key. Plus it shouldn't too hard to have printed or molded if the lines are thick enough. And I'd imagine it could also be stylized slightly differently for keysets.

I have pretty much decided on what symbol I would like to push.
However, please keep the suggestions rolling! Perhaps there is something even better out there.

I hate to throw a fly in the ointment, but I thought one of the cool aspects of the various keysets was the creative things people did with the OS Key. Each set tended to replace the OS specific key with a symbolic keycap that related to the set. Why do we want to replace this with a single common symbol which has a very small chance of pleasing everyone?
