I hate to throw a fly in the ointment, but I thought one of the cool aspects of the various keysets was the creative things people did with the OS Key. Each set tended to replace the OS specific key with a symbolic keycap that related to the set. Why do we want to replace this with a single common symbol which has a very small chance of pleasing everyone?

I don't feel like having a universal symbol available prevents people from still doing that. It just seems like it would be a nice option for sets that don't really have a theme that can be illustrated in a symbol. In those cases a platform neutral symbol can be a way to please the people who want to have a graphical key there instead of just "win", "super", or "meta" without forcing an os logo on them.

Maybe something like:

Edit: I hate the stupid border that shows up on every in-line image.

Do I have a good response to this?
No.

Do I still want this?
Yes.

Shrug* I guess it gives us another option as well as something the community can identify with.

I don't really understand.
Should we just make a velociraptor joke cap so that it will proliferate throughout the keyboard community and for some reason every single keyboard enthusiast will have velociraptors on their keyboards?

IMO, "command" is too Mac-centric, "super" is too UNIX-centric, and "win" is off course too Windows-centric.

The two I like best so far are the Glider (heh) and diamond. However, the diamond Meta key used to be a part of every Tsangan set (along with the star), and no one seemed to like it much.

The glider is something that is very simple and anyone a part of hacker culture can associate with.
It is very fitting for GeekHackers and it's something that anyone outside of GH can easily associate with as well.
This is how I see the glider symbol.

What about just having 'OS' on a key, in the font and colour of the keyset?
And if that fails, a square power symbol, where instead of a circle, it is square?

Check my mixtape, fam.

I thought of doing something with "OS" but that only works in English (and maybe a few Germanic languages), so it's not truly universal.

Something resembling the power symbol might be a cool idea.

Maybe the monitor should be closer to a 4:3.  Something about a wide screen monitor on top of a desktop case seems off.

But I do remember that it had in it that "Windows NT 5" had been released in 1997.

The glider is something that is very simple and anyone a part of hacker culture can associate with.
I had no idea what you were referring to. I had to look it up. I learned to code on a Commodore 64 back in 1989, been active on BBS:es in the early '90s, used Internet first through a bridge from FidoNet, demo scene, LAN parties, open source... and have never seen that symbol before.

I did one earlier that was in a "window" of sorts.  Nobody commented on it.  It needs to be in a box or something in order for it to be an icon and not merely 2 symbols found elsewhere on the keyboard.

I can do a clean version in Illustrator tonight when I get home if somebody doesn't beat me to it.

Yeah, kind of.  I was going to take it even a step further -- basically just a command symbol in a box.  Corners have to be radiused for SP -- they have a technical document on their site explaining all the (many) requirements for new legends.

This one is my favourite out of all of them, but I guess we might want to talk to the Deskthority guys about it first, perhaps?

Maybe there's a way we can get both GH and DT (the actual letters) into the symbol?

The other two I really like are the glide symbol, and the command line prompt.

I would be in on a group buy of these.  ;D

Once a decision has been made, I will definitely start a group buy based on the design which will include the key in every popular colorway.
No idea if I would do individual keys to increase adoption, or an extravaganza pack to make it concise.
I would just have to get permission from the creators of each set.

EVERY colorway, EVERY profile, 1.25, 1.5, 1 sizes, mkay?
I'm back.

I'll probably divide into packs like the extravaganza.
So maybe I will have 3 colorways with all of their respective keys in one pack which makes for 18 keys per pack.
Every profile? No. Just the ones which the sets were made in.

That sounds... pretty crazy actually.  So you're going to organize ABS/PBT and DSA/DCS/SA and doubleshot/dye-sub into the same giant GB to cover all the popular sets?

You're a brave man.

I imagine there would be about a dozen different sets out there that I could include.
If there were 3 colorways in a pack, then that would mean there would be 4 packs in total.
It's not the most insane thing in the world when you divide it like that.
