Beast of an F I call the Beige Whale
« on: Wed, 17 December 2014, 15:22:15 »
Much thanks to hwood34 for selling me this exceedingly hard to document piece.  Anyway enough of the formalities.

While this may LOOK like a 5291 "Bigfoot", the internals are totally different along with different legends.  The best I can tell it cam from the IBM 5324 system.  There seems to be very few images of this system let alone of the keyboard.

I will post a teaser pic here and then a link to the album on flickr

That is indeed a beast. I love the keys raise in the middle. How much does said beast weigh?

Nice.
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

The end goal is to make this thing work over USB while keeping 100% stock looks including the huge plug at the end of the cable.  https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=56747.msg1283409#msg1283409  Bottom pic in the OP shows the plug.  I have zero issue cutting a hole into my PC case for the mate to that plug and building the converter/controller inside my PC.

Sounds like a sweet project!
Having an actual converter for that on your PC would be sick.

I never weighed it exactly, but it was really heavy, IIRC something like 5 or 6 lbs.
And nice pics! Hopefully you can get this thing up and running :thumb:

JDCarpe has a great quote on this.

How much of the case is metal?

Bottom half is stamped steel, the top half is hard very thick plastic.  The top half actually has less flex then the bottom half.  The one thing that is broke I can fix with some JB Water weld and a threaded insert once I get the thread figured out

I will be starting a build/help log in the making stuff together section soon.

Sorry about the multiposts I was getting an error I hadn't seen before and didn't think they were going through.

Mods feel free to clean this up.

Yeah - it seems to happen whenever anyone quotes me, the forum software doesn't like my username.
