The caps are already made so there is no need for a GB.

Sorry I got the impression that there weren't that many.
So are these to be purchased?
Or will they only be available/distributed to those that really knew the guy?
Are these tab keys? or \| keys?
So I think its appropriate that these will now be known as the SmallFry Friends & Family Tribute key
If they were originally intended to be given away for free to the members of the community, then shouldn't they?... It feels kinda wrong to charge money for them, even though the money will be going to his family or charity of their choice. People can always donate out of their own generosity, they don't need a special key in return to do something noble. Just my 2 cents on the matter.

I understand your sentiment, but I see it as a badge of privilege, like the Livestrrong bracelet (maybe not the best example). Perhaps they could be offered with a minimum price but the amount could be open for larger donations. Really you're paying to cover the initial production, shipping and handling sort of like the way non-profits operate.

i agree with this wholeheartedly
flynn asked me to review this post before he put it up but i knew i'd just break down crying and it would take him longer to post it. let's get this going. for nate.
imo, the money should go to the charity of his family's choice. i believe that's the ronald mcdonald foundation.
I rock one of these on my keyboard :) I'll take pictures tonight.
Love the key, and I'd totally get a few more.
time for a long overdue update!
After the Nathaniel J. Walter Foundation is in place and functioning as a non-profit (read more about it here: http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47366.msg1008698#msg1008698 (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47366.msg1008698#msg1008698) ) the F&F keys will be going up for auction with 100% of the proceeds going to the foundation. Nate's father Scott is working on getting this setup, but it takes time and we don't have a date yet when it will be complete.
The auction will be for a small number of special F&F limited edition packages each containing:
-4 F&F keys
-4 F&F stickers
-4 authentic Cherry transparent top black MX switches

Will it only be auctions or will there be fixed price?
I'd rather pay fix cause auctions turns me off.
probably all auctions, it's the easiest way to get the most money to the charitytime for a long overdue update!

Auctions don't work like that XD. I'm kinda interested in these but I'm dreading how high the bids are going to go if there are indeed only a few sets up for auction.time for a long overdue update!

The point that I find a more frustrating is the "small number/limited edition" bit. Creating artificial scarcity for a memorial seems a bit, well, cruel. It seems a harsh term, but I can really think of no better at the moment. Driving up the price artificially by unnecessarily limiting the supply means that some who knew him will suddenly have to decide whether their sentimental value is worth whatever price premium results from limiting the edition. It also requires those participants who have the least, to sacrifice the most, and when combined with an auction, still have the chance to be outbid in a moment on the whim of someone slightly better off. Worse, it invites both speculation (if one can put it up on eBay the month after the auction closes for 125% of their bid, that's an absurdly good rate of return), and the simple cruelty of wealth (someone who has never heard of SmallFry but has enough money to win all the auctions because they happen to like the design and want to give them out at their nephew's birthday party). And I will be the first to admit that this is not my rodeo and inlikeflynn is welcome to run this however he sees fit, simply expressing my own feelings/concerns.

I believe that these keys were already in production before SmallFry's passing, and at that point they were simply meant to be a mystery key. In that regard, the artificial scarcity you mention would have been good (back when it was a mystery key), or at least not bad. It is my understanding that they were renamed to include SmallFry in their title after his passing, at which point they were already produced. Just wanted to offer that up as an explanation for your point about under-producing and scarcity. Their purpose was re-aligned after production, as far as I know.

You must be right but may i ask if it is still possible to produce more if the demand is high?
