[IC] Cleave TKL
« on: Fri, 29 March 2019, 17:18:08 »
Hey guys, a few of you may know me but my name is Vinzlr. I frequent Reddit/GH/Discord and today I've got an IC for a TKL that I am actively working on. Without further ado I present the Cleave.

Background
This project started when I realized that for some reason I really wanted a MX TKL. I wanted a TKL that was very heavy, chonky and something that I couldn't exactly describe. So I got to working on my own design after some friends pushed me a little bit.
This keyboard is heavily inspired by: Yuktsi and Ryan Norbauer. Without them doing what they do I wouldn't have wanted to do this. In addition to that I'd like to thank Hineybush/Ryan Norbauer for giving me incredible advice and help while working on this.

Design Features
  • Two part design: the top half is aluminum while the bottom half is a brass weight
  • Thick bezels
  • Will use H.87 pcb from Hineybush

Progress
  • Case: 85% (still need to add screw holes for plate/weight + hole for usb plug)
    • Also decide between chamfering and non-chamfering case edges(find attached google form to vote)
  • Weight: 90% (still need to add holes for screws + design)
  • Plate: 0% (haven't started working on it but plan to match TGR Jane plate)

Any pics of the bottom?

Here you go.

Disclaimer: Don't really rely on this for an image of the bottom, still need to add engraving and screw holes so its going to have a lot more going on when its done

Also sorry for ****ty resolution images, still learning this software. For now the renders will be fine but once I have a proto in hand I'll post some nice pictures.

Just to add to my Google form response. I selected USB c for the connector, but actually I don't care what it is because I have a spare h. 87 pcb and plan on using that anyways.

I'm interested in the design but I think that whole bottom being brass is just too much. I'd be in if there was an aluminum option for the bottom.

Just wondering as I don’t have too much experience with machining, what would be the problem machining the bottom piece? It’s essential a giant flat piece of brass shaped like a cross.

I love how the base shows through. It always feels like a shame that the brass is often hiding underneath the case on many of these fine boards. I am definitely looking forward to this!

That was the goal! I wanted to make the bird as heavy as possible without making it entirely of brass which is how I came up with the idea. But then I thought it looked pretty cool having it peek out on all sides.

Would be cool if the height of the brass reduced and making it seems like it’s ‘lifted’ or floating. Just my suggestion though.

Nothing would be a problem, it's a pretty simple bottom piece. Depends how you do the case joining, but I seriously doubt any factory will have a problem.

Case joining is just going to be a few screws on the bottom and I agree with you. I’m no expert but overall it seems like it would be very simple. I believe that the most complex part will be getting it engraved

I’m with Puddsy on this one. You should revise so that it does not have corners. No sides either, CNC shops hate making things with sides.

On a more serious note, great work. Looking forward to seeing this come together.
