[IC] GMK Civilizations - GB NOW LIVE!
« on: Sat, 03 October 2020, 13:13:56 »

GB Live Here

Since the beginning of time, humans have always been enraptured with building things that are bigger, better, and more awe inspiring than ever before.

From the ancients of France and Britain building dolmens to the wonders of modern engineering evidenced by towering cities and hulking skyscrapers, we have come far

From around the world, people have come together to construct incredible monuments, places of worship, and towering statues, a testament to the perseverance of Human Kind.

GMK Civilizations aims to celebrate these miraculous constructions of civilizations long gone,

paying homage to the peoples of the world who built:

The Pyramids of Giza
Stonehenge
The Forbidden Palace
The Moai
The Parthenon
Chichen Itza
The Colloseum
The Great Wall of China
The Great Sphinx of Giza
The Taj Mahal
Al-Kaʿbah al-Musharrafah

Colors

More
I chose to use White and Brass (WS1 and RAL 1024 respectively) to represent this set

I believe the simplicity and elegance of these colors allow me to highlight the ancient wonders themselves

RAL 1024 is a near perfect match for brass weights and accents

Please note that all colors are digital representations of a physical color sample and will likely vary slightly in the actual product

Kind of wish it had more coloured keys than just enter and esc, but the theme is very interesting
Regardless, I look forward to seeing progress on this set (esp that brass rama someone mentioned)

This looks awesome. It would suit the Aaru TKL super well. Have you played around with gold/accented modifiers? The look now has a nice simplistic look, so it would lose some of that, but I mention it because the modifiers when accented and laid out on a keyboard, kind of look like stepped pyramids, especially Chichen Itza, and even moreso for a split backspace layout!

The color choice is definitely appropriate for the theme, but I'm not sure that WS2 is the right choice for the white, as it's quite cool. I associate ancient monumental architecture more with warm whites.

Your base kit is missing R3 PgUp and R4 PgDn.

Your spacebars kit has 1.75u space and second 1u space, which are only used on 40% boards, so they should be removed from the kit as they are effectively useless here.

I'd love to see a Greek alphas set, keeping with the overall theme. or maybe Greek sublegends? (full disclosure, I have no idea if tooling exists for this). The novelties might be refined to include the 7 Wonders of the World? I really like the colors though, so great work there. Also a collab with Marblek on this?

But the overall theme isn't Greek, that's just one of the civilizations it references.

No its not Greek, but also keeping with an overall theme of civilizations, it's be an interesting addition as one of the acknowledged cradles of Western civilization. With that said though, maybe more appropriate that there'd be multiple language alphas? Greek, Latin, Canjie, etc?

I think the colors really speak towards a Greek or Latin option though.

I agree with this regarding the white. A warmer white might suit it better. Would also like to see gold accent spacebars either in base or in spacebars kit. Otherwise really like the direction and theme on this set!

I think WS1 is better for white color because coupled color is yellowish color. As WS2 is quite blue tone, so I don't know they go well together.

Very nice! Definitely enjoy the color scheme and overall theme; as a fan of history and an avid Civ player this speaks to me on a lot of levels :D

Any chance of seeing 2x 1.5u Super keys, and an extra 1u Alt for Mac 7u users? Also, having 1u novelties for R2 and R3 would allow 65% users to outfit the right column with fun novelties the full way down the board.

To paraphrase Ronnie Coleman, everybody wants accent mod kits, but no one wants to pay no high-a$$ed price for them. This ain’t KAT.

Custom color mods only kit at 100 moq is about 105$. A base kit with 250 moq with WS1 or WS2 white and this color could be held down to 130.

Go look at the prices and sales numbers for GMK Carbon R2, terminal, posh, and prepress, and while you’re at it, see GMK forge and GMK Rocket, and then the dual base kits of yuru, GMK Godspeed, space cadet r2, and classic blue. If you think higher moq will assuage your kitting issues with separate mods kits...go read Oblotzky’s justification of GMK oblivion r2 kitting after getting quotes.

This is also from someone who bought Carbon Umka. That said, if you ran white on bronze, and bronze on white base kits, I’d probably buy both.

Hey, Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

I'll definitely do some research into this and see if it's more viable to produce a white on bronze variant of all of the rest of my kits rather than to offer a brass mod kit.

None of the GMK kitting cost concerns changes that both colorways are sweet and the the theme and novs are top notch. I think you’ve got a hit that upper level vendors will want and kitting is something that they can help talk out.

Hello,

I like the work you've put into this; very classy! I wanted to take a few moments and offer some kitting feedback.

There are a few experimental changes some ortholinear users are throwing around to make base GMK kits a bit more ortho friendly (and cut back on the number of total keys in many cases).

  • Change R2 PgUp to R2 Out
  • Change R3 PgDn/PgUp to R3 Read or Data
  • Change R4 End/PgDn to R4 Read or Data

Currently, you have 14 navigation keys in the base kit. Providing a few "generic" options will allow you to cut back the total number of keys, creating a smaller, leaner base kit. Further, these changes support richer ortholinear coverage (Planck, Preonic) without sacrificing much. In fact, you can cut two keys!

I understand that these alterations to existing keys may prove controversial for many 65% users who depend on correctly labelled keycaps for navigation purposes. However, be the change you want to see. I think this is worth brining up in an IC, even if the answer is a resounding no.

Lastly, here is a quick KLE mockup for how someone may utilize) ONLY the base kit on a preonic using the above recommendations. This is just my interpretation of how it may look, others may chose to do something different. Notice where "Out," "Read," and "Data" are positioned on the left handed mod column. If these keys did not exist, someone would need to use "End," "PgUp," and/or "PgDn" there instead, which would not look as good and certainly will not match the key function. With more generic legends, its less bothersome because keyboards do not have a specific function which matches "Out," "Data," or "Read" (at least not modern keyboards).   https://i.imgur.com/2dEcYM0.png

Thanks for your time and consideration. GLWIC!

I'd like to see a more subtle mousepad. A white mousepad with golden shapes on it.

Great set, definitely in. I would however absolutely go for WS1 for this set.

I have the GMK standard keycap ring and WS1 would be a lot better/creamier with this legend color. The harsh blue/grey of WS2 would not complement the brass tone imo.

EDIT: Fixed for mixing up WS1 and WS2 - thanks for the corrections folks!

I'll put in my vote for WS2. WS1 makes sense as a warm white, but I think WS2's cool white would better compliment the brass color

The best looking set on a white keyboard, but I have a couple of suggestions:

- Can we get a wadset for the brass mod? Looks more uniformed.
- The bronze enter key in brass mod seems repetitive?

Treeleaf not approved. The price is too high for the kitting. And the kitting isn't even good.
What do you mean $120 for "still supporting as many standard layouts as possible"?????

Why does it cost $200 for Base / UK ISO / Numpad?

Normally it would be 135 for all of these features in the same base kit.......

$120 for that base kit...

All kitting and prices are based on preliminary quotes and are subject to change pending feedback from the community. I understand that it's frustrating for people who use non-ansi layouts, but I want to give it a few more days and see what the general consensus is on the current kitting. We're currently teetering between 500MOQ and 1000MOQ, with the base kit price of $120 being based on the 500MOQ. If enough interest is garnered, we could see that go up to 1000 MOQ and consequentially see a large price drop. I'm more than happy to answer any questions about the decisions behind my current kitting and also perfectly open to change my mind about it if enough people make good enough arguments :)

I feel like the trade off for a tiny decrease in cost vs the amount of compatibility lost in the base kit is not worth it.

GMK Thai Tea was priced with a 250 MOQ and the larger base kit is at $135.
That's a $15 difference with a bigger base kit, more colors, and a smaller MOQ.

Meanwhile, with this kitting, we are looking at $120 for tkl support, then $40 for numpad, and $40 for ISO for a total of $200.

Why do you think this is the better way to kit the set?

This kitting makes a lot more sense if we can garner enough interest for a 1000 moq and consequently see lower prices than currently listed, which I'm still uncertain on. If my vendors and I feel that a 1000 MOQ is reasonable, then this (or a close variation) of this kitting will likely be what gets produced. If that isn't the case, then the kitting will revert back to something far more standard, with ISO and numpad support in the base kit. Rest assured that I am closely monitoring feedback and this kitting/pricing is far from final.

That sounds like a good plan. 1000 MOQ gets 100$ numpadless base kits (or 95$ like GMK Honor) and even numpad users like me don’t mind much then.

Really like this set. It’s a good alternative WS1 set.
I must say I’m quite surprised that it costs $120 at 500 MOQ. Was expecting it to be cheaper.
Happy to drop the numpad but I think novelties and alt mods may be fairly critical. Also not enough brass 1u specialties for the last column for a 65% board :)

Aced the design of the kit ! It's my first GMK IC and I'm not really phased by the price.
The only (minor) gripe I have is about the noveltiies: plenty of 1u is fine but I'd be looking forward to replacing the 7 x1.25u of r4 of well as the shifts/backspace/enter; well.... modifiers.
Looking forward for a brass esc key too!

Treeleaf does Not Approve!

Treeleaf I definitely agree that I have some concerns with the current pricing. As I referenced in another comment, I only intend to keep this kitting if I believe that we can run the set at a higher moq and thus a lower price, otherwise it is likely that I will rework the kitting to be less narrow. I appreciate the feedback, and believe me when I say that I want to offer the best deal to as many customers as I can.

The size of the base kit has been reduced drastically to provide the lowest possible price while still supporting as many standard layouts as possible
So TKL kits are becoming the new base kits? To be honest I'm disappointed, I really liked this set as a nice, classy alternative to the super clean BOW. For me it had a similar vibe as GMK Noir has for WOB, but with that kitting decision I find it hard to justify a buy  :(

Price kinda on the higher side considering the keys in the base kit. Still a good looking set none the less! Keeping an eye out for the base kit!

Very sad to see the size of the base kit get sized down to TKL only. Having to pay $160 for a full base kit seems to be going to opposite direction of the new norm for pricing. This is one of my favorite sets to be IC'ed in a while and would love to support but $200 seems a bit steep for full base kit plus novelties.

Looks really nice!

I have to agree with others though that the kitting vs price decisions made here makes little sense.

120 for a TKL base is a shame, truly.

Hey, just wanted to clarify what happened here with the kitting. This is my first time designing a set, and as such I have little experience with how kit size / moq / and other variables specifically affect pricing. I had gone to this kitting in hopes that I could offer a cheaper base kit for most users, but after receiving feedback I've realized that the drastic increase in cost for ISO/Numpad users isn't worth the slight decrease in base kit cost. It's really important to me that the community understands that these kitting decisions weren't made out of greed and instead were made out of ignorance. The kitting will revert back to a more standard one with numpad and iso support in base kit.

Plans for any sort of of extensions kit which could include a vertical function/macro row such as the ones seen on GMK Serika R2's macro extensions kit- would absolutely make this set a must!

I wish I could support all layouts, but unfortunately with GMK prices/kitting/MOQs it just isn't viable. Based on other sets that have run in the past, Norde/EU kits tend to only sell about 3-5% of base kit sales, meaning I would have to sell 2000-3000 base kits just to meet a 100 MOQ. As amazing as it would be if we could make those numbers happen, it just isn't viable based on IC response.

Love the kit update!
It's missing a 1u backspace (which is used in Adélie render), but I'll just use minus or something. I wouldn't be using the key as backspace anyway.

Unfortunately, the brass mods kit has been reduced to support up to TKL layouts to keep the cost as low as possible. Alternate mods kits get very expensive very quickly, so I had to make some difficult decisions to keep it at a reasonable cost :(

I had checked with the 40s discord server as I'm hardly an expert on 40s/ortho kitting, and they said that the kit looked fine, so I was unaware that the 1u backspace was considered integral. If enough people feel that they need the 1u backspace added back to the 40s kit, it's certainly something that can happen.

Update: I checked with them again and realized that my 40s/ortho kitting was inconsistant, I don't intend to offer support for UT47 (anyone who wanted this set for that please feel free to leave a comment and I can consider it), so I'll be removing the 1.25 enter and 1.5 shift (formerly intended for Evolv support) in exchange for a 1u backspace. Thank you for bringing this to my attention!

Hey there! Glad you'll be adding back the 1u backspace (did not realize it was missing) but could I caution against removing 1.25 enter key? There's a few layouts that use it, and it'd be hella nice to have in the kit :) 1.5u shift is not that prevalent however.

Is there any chance that this set will run to the beginning of March?

That is unfortunately the only scenario that I would be able to afford to buy this set!

The set will be running starting today, January 23rd, through February 23rd. Vendors will be ordering extras though, so you might be able to pick up a set later!

Is this already sold out on Mechs&Co? Or has the site just not opened the GB yet?

I realize its too late now but if there is ever a round 2 of this set, i think a pagoda would make a neat vertical enter novelty

I see  no price for extras in Europe. Does it mean we're toast for deskmat/artisans?
That'll pretty much decide if I order through my keyboard or proto[typist].

edit: The gb is now live on my keyboard with all the extras.
Bonus question: will the other artisans be added as they are revealed ? (looking at you Mode Designs)

I chose to use White and Brass (WS1 and RAL 1024 respectively) to represent this set

I believe the simplicity and elegance of these colors allow me to highlight the ancient wonders themselves

RAL 1024 is a near perfect match for brass weights and accents

Please note that all colors are digital representations of a physical color sample and will likely vary slightly in the actual product
