Title: DUCK 75% Keyboard - Discussion
Post by: elton5354 on Sun, 06 July 2014, 18:35:15
Hi there,

TrueCustom and DUCK is planning on designing a new 75% keyboard.  They would like geekhack's input on a new design or if you would rather they keep their current design like Lightsaver V2, Orion, etc..

I was thinking maybe a geekhack edition with GH SE CNC'd onto the case such as the LZ-GH keyboard. An option of ALPs and MX PCB is a plus as well. More choices the better, right?

Well, please share your ideas here.

Please fill in the form if you are interested in this Octagon 75% keyboard.

I'd probably be down for an alps 75%. An SE version would just be a plus =)

I was very close to picking up a Keycool 84 but instead got a Poker II. I would like to see a set up like the Keycool 84 it would be...coo...what I would prefer to see. 75% with dedicated arrow keys gets a :thumb: from me.

something thick and heavy.  75% isn't a popular mobile formfactor like 60%,

maybe something less steep than 11 degrees?  without feet so it can be heavier.

front-facing LEDs and a 'breathing' mode please.

maybe brass and/or stainless steel?  not the whole bottom, but a cutout is always purdy,

also, having an acrylic 'light layer' like the orion would be AMAZING.

Everyone who posts "alps 75%" should have a requirement to also post the donor board(s) they plan to use.  The variety of cap and stabilizer variations probably don't matter if you're an alps collector, but for the average person who doesn't know a lot it makes it very hard to source parts for an alps board.

Also, with alps, I'd love the compatibility for rgb leds. SMD or otherwise.

Also interested in alps 75%

Would the caps from http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=59916.0 work? The enter and \| will be sourced elsewhere, but this comes with a 1.75x shift which is perfect for 75% alps

75% is my ideal layout so I'm interested. Ideally I would want an option on the bottom row for 1.25 + 1.25 + 1.25 + 6.x + whatever.

The keyboard would probably be too heavy for you, it has an aluminum case. Isn't that why you're selling your MX Mini?

I'm not a huge fan of 75%, but I AM a huge fan of Duck and would probably be unable to resist.

As far as input goes, I don't feel that I am worthy, nor have the creativity to provide any useful information. I think the Lightsaver bottom LED is extremely cool and can't wait to get my hands on a Viper for that very reason.  That being said, I'll give it a shot.

If it would be possible to have a rectangular cutout across the back where an acrylic piece could be inserted could allow for an under-mounted LED to light up the back would be very, very interesting. Could jack up the production costs through the roof, but all that is above my pay grade. Etch the acrylic insert with Duck75 GH Edition.

A 75% user, like myself, can't live without function keys either for work or game.
I use 75% cos safe desk space, a separate numpad I can put anywhere, more ergonomic.
I don't like Race2, have to press 2 buttons for F11 F12.
Hopefully more standard size keycap we can swap more easier.
Aesthetics? I really don't care :D

I like the design of the Duck Mini V1 and V2 case where there are no feet like the KMACs. I'd love to see that case design stay. I also loved the Poker suits cut into the back of the case. It would be great to see the GH SE logo or something else cut like that. I also thought it was clever to have cutouts in the case to allow the LEDs to show through in the Orion. I would like to see that again. And I think if you made the Alps version compatible with the Dell AT101W caps, that would work out nicely. Those boards are easy to find.

I *really* didn't like the riser for the V2 case. Please please please don't have those again.

Think those are all the things I can think of at the moment...I'm very interested in a 75% Alps board :D

My only desire is a white instead of black

Sorry to burst your bubble. If this is going to be an aluminum case like the rest of Duck's boards, you can't get the board anodized in white. You can read why in this post from The_Beast. (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47171.msg1027578#msg1027578)

Since DUCK has always produced such unique boards, they should do something a little different, maybe a 70% board with 1 row taller but just as wide as a 60%. That way you have all your function keys as well as arrows if you want but still keep END/Home/PgUp/PgDn/INS under the function row. I assume most of us who need 75% over 60% is because of the function keys, and this would solve that issue without making it too large.

maybe something like this
(http://i.imgur.com/iVJ90x5.png)
instead of the usual 75% width of this

personally, i like the 75% form factor due to the fact it slims down on size whilst retaining all the function keys in their "proper" location. e.g. having the 4 arrow keys in the same row just feels off, same as having PgUp next to PgDown instead of above

Keycool essentially has it almost perfect with the Keycool 84 (in regards to my own personal preference for layout goes).

75% boards, as has been suggested, make the best of minimizing footprint while maintaining "one-key press" functionality of the most-used functions.

Initially, I'd like to see something done in that vein, with custom GH and Duck flair perhaps.

Outside of that, I'd personally want to see something along the lines of a Coolermaster TK (not 75%, but close enough); specifically with key cap replacement in mind.

I think the most important thing to change is to replace the red desk-facing LEDs on the sides with RGB LEDs. That way the end user won't have to desolder them.

If it supports ALPS (and I'm pretty sure it will) it should be 1.5x mods and 7x space bar layout because there are not a lot of key cap options if you go with 1.25x and 6.75x space bar.

I love 75% and I would probably buy a Duck 75.  I was about to design a Race-compatible PCB and stick it in a AboStudio GAC75 case, but this would be better.  I don't like the MX-mini very much but I would use it if I had to.

I don't like the idea of inscribing "GH" anywhere on it.

YES PLEASE!

Also, while I have no issues with the current DUCK designs, I think a low-profile yet still heavy case would be a fresh idea.

P.S. Is this before or after ErgoDuck becomes real?

* Flat case. If you want feet and/or more weights, you screw it on to the underside.
* All 1u keys on Function row.
* All 1u cursor keys
* Right Alt right in front of . (Period key)

They've created a sample for the case.  PCB can still be worked out..I've asked for ISO support, so we'll see..

Duck wants to put sticker in the middle insert, but I would rather have something engraved in it.

They are also planning on this:

They look very promising.
I kind of agree with you, the engraved sticker would be better.
Also, somebody mentioned the keyboard angle. This looks a bit steep to me but maybe I prefer less.
When can we buy them?  :thumb:

Something like the noppoo choc mini that doesn't break after 6 months would be a massive plus, maybe a metal backplate, something that is a little bit more sturdy.

That'd be amazing.

wants: arrow cluster, function keys (similar to noppoo) etc.
don't wants: horrible keys, clutteredness, cheap looking/poor design.

I'm not too sure about their Duck Nintendo...more info later?

And that little center label part really bugs me.  :))  Maybe it'll look better if it's engraved like elton suggested but right now it annoys the heck out of me.  Like the layout.  Hate that little center nub. :(

Agreed, not sure why that is there, kinda reminds me of childhood toys where you have to put the stickers on. Not to mention all the extra cnc cuts you need to make that which increase milling time which then potentially increases costs. :/

I agree that the design is not perfect. I won't expect duck's to change the angle, since all the duck boards with botom LED have this angle. After Lightsaver V1, V2, light pad, Orion, and Viper/Eagle, I'm a little tired of this bottom LED design. But I will still be down for one and even two for duck's 75% keyboard. There really isn't other options if you want 75% layout with full metal case. Chance for other full metal mx-mini kits? Almost zero. I've been waiting for a whole year for a full metal case mx-mini kit, and I'm still 75%-less.

I expect it to be cheaper than Lightsaver V2, which is $295.

I'd guess the price is between lightsaver and viper/eagle.

I don't think having the acrylic piece in the middle plausible since it's a 1 piece design.

nice price!!!! god knows i have tons of switches, caps, and a soldering iron already

ya.  honestly, the design isn't the best, but it's not actually bad.  for that price (as in not $700) and the lack of competitors, i am definitely in.

Interesting design!  I too thought that having an acrylic layer would be very cool, but from what I've seen of the Orion, it would also make the case / keyboard taller still.  I think there's merit to low laying cases and keyboards.  I'm able to use my LightSaver without a wrist rest, because the front is quite low.  If that's how the 70% board will be designed, I think it's a comfortable height.  I was initially scared of the 11-degree angle, but in practice, the Lightsaver has been a very comfortable keyboard for me (been my main keyboard for quite a while now).

Another possibility would be to have a bottomless tray of sorts, where there's a large rectangular cut-out at the bottom of the tray, removing *most* of the bottom except a narrow ridge (say 1cm wide), and a transparent thick acrylic sheet is placed at the bottom, over the cut-out.  Then the acrylic sheet bolts from the top onto the ridges of the "tray", and the plate + PCB bolt onto the acrylic plate from the top (say into stand-offs).  That way you have the neat view of the finished PCB, and could still end up with some LEDs at the bottom, visible from the sides (as the case would be elevated slightly by its feet/pads).  That would of course reduce the overall weight (and price), but it would also be a potentially softer and "springier" board to type on.  Could laser something onto the bottom acrylic too.

Screw an Alps 75%. A big issue already with 75% right now is keycap compatibility due to odd size mods. You people want to compound this issue with 99% of keycaps not being able to fit either?

A 75% with odd sized keys (invariable), and only fitting an extreme minority of keycaps would be all but unsellable.

I suggested in the design topic that the side LEDs be RGB so you could pick the colour instead of having to change them. I think DUck0113 made metal badges with our usernames because we contributed something.

If that's the case, then I think having RGBLEDs on the side is an awesome way to go.

The layout with bottom row
1.5 1.5 7 1.5 1.5 1 1 1
It's not uncommon at all (for ex. SGI Granite), the only problem can be the 1.75 shift

Yup, it looks better with the cable, I'm still trying to get use to the looks..

It could also be the way the photos are taken, since it looks better from the top view rather than the from view of the nub..

I wonder will this be implemented for all the future Duck keyboards?

There was one that was posted earlier, but who wants to pay $100 for a keyboard just for the 1.75u shift?

I'm interested in this keyboard, but sad to see that the minimalist flow of the design in disrupted in the middle by the sticker part.

Would there be a "normal" rectangular case without it as an option? Guessing that it's decided for some reason that he wants a sticker area.

I think the colourbars are the RGB SMDs that you can put on the top and bottom row of the PCB as you can see in the PCB pictures where there are those square shaped spots.  It looks like it only works if you have an acrylic case though as they are facing the bottom..?

Duck probably randomly picked names and made some samples of the stickers..:P

I actually like it. Do you have a better idea of approximately how much it would cost?

I think Elton said its around similar cost to Light Saver

I think he said before that it would be between a lightsaver and another duck board in pricing but I wasn't sure if he has a closer estimate now.

It is similar cost to the lightsaver because of the newly designed PCB with RGB compatibility.

It is still cheaper than most of the other Korean keyboards.

The 40% keyboard from this one Korean keyboard maker is around $240.  Just for reference and that keyboard is not full aluminum (2 thin aluminum plates with PC walls).  Well his prices are always astronomical..

I don't understand where the rgb LEDs are installed? Can you still get that effect once switches and keycaps are in?

I see, so you can't use a plate if you want to see the RGB effects.

No I don't think you can't use a plate to get that effect.  The light will shine around the outside of the PCB and plate even with caps on. That's what it looks like at least.

Also there are 4 different layout options.

the RGBLEDs are on the other side of the SCB from where a plate would go. The 2 on the sides shine down on your desk through the holes in the case, just like all the other duck keyboards (my idea!). The rest are positioned around the edge and wolud shine out through the side of the case through that plastic spacer.

I really like how duck has gone to RGBLED: I think it's a great step in the right direction. I will probably have to pick up one of the next generation.

So this is a 'tray style' case so it's made up of one piece of metal and a plate, so it won't be as 'solid' as a KMAC, correct? How about compared to a GON, this will be more solid right? Sorry for the silly question.

Yes it's tray style case. It might not be as solid as KMAC, but it has a lot more metal than Gon.

My lightsaver (tray style) feels more solid than my KMAC did, but I suspect that's because of the steel plate on the lightsaver and the aluminium plate on the KMAC (now sold).

This is my personal opinion but the incline on my lightsaver isn't bad at all and it appears to be very comparable if not the same on the 75%. I use a Filco wrist rest so my palms sit at a good height and is very comfortable to type on. I wouldn't recommend a DSA set for such a board but to each their own. =)

Yeah I wouldn't use anything but a sculptured set on something with that steep of an incline. I actually really like DSA and I tend to lay my keyboards down flat so I might have to pass although the layout on this looks awesome.

I had the same reservations, preferring the flat profile of a Filco without its feet extended, but the Lightsaver is quite low along the front, and overall typing angle is very comfortable.  I like Cherry profile keycaps on it.
