I'll put together a better pitch later but, by comparison, Austin will be warmer, have better BBQ, have more access to heavy machining facilities at TechShop, and maybe a little cheaper for lodging. But it also won't be as friendly for walking. Downtown is super friendly for walking, but the airport and the venue are not that close and will require cabs or ride shares to get around.
It seems like folks are more excited about the Philly option and that's fine but again I probably won't be able to make it up depending on the date.

I'd be willing to host in SF, if people would want to do it here (I know the Massdrop HQ keyboard meetup is also here). My apartment building has a rentable space that could definitely work well. Plus, I'm right next to BART.
Heck, I'd help with that, too, and could offer similar access to Techshop demos as has been discussed for Austin.
But given people have complained about the potential costs for doing this in the DC area, I'm pretty sure it is a nonstarter, given that we're in a neck-and-neck race with Manhattan for Most Expensive City. Also, we're pretty much as far left as you can go on the map, meaning worse flights for everyone <waves> over there.
That said, if for some reason folks wanted to do it, I'd love that and could throw effort and some resources at it.
I have no recommendation, but am going to try my damndest to attend this year.
Chicago or Indianapolis. Indy being within striking distance of Chicago, Cincy, Columbus, Louisville, even St Louis.
I hope cptbadass makes it so we can go to Galloping Ghost if it's in Chicago, but anywhere that's easiest for all would be grand.
Our nation's Capitol, maybe? Two airports, lots of flight choices, and more possible locations than you can shake a stick at.

Also expensive AF for places to stay (or at least what people that have traveled there recently have told me).

I can't imagine that it would be any more expensive then say, Chicago. Plus, you could do it in Arlington or Alexandria which would be less expensive and you are still only a 5 minute Metro from the city if you want to do some sight seeing. And those areas by themselves are great and have lots to do. Just a thought.
This. It doesn't have to be held right downtown near the capitol or anything. There are plenty of nearby places around DC and northern VA that would be fun and very affordable for this type of event. Group tours of the area would be a nice side benefit.
I vote Philadelphia, i'll buy u all tastykakes and wawa coffee.

A new year is upon us, so a new KeyCon shall be planned. I'd like to have a dedicated organizer this year, to ensure that the plans don't fall through. Let's start the discussion by picking a location, keeping in mind that we will need someone to run the show and make things go smoothly.
So with that - where do we want to meet up??
If you aren't familiar with KeyCon, check out the KeyCon 2015 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?board=172.0) subforum for some details on what it's all about. ^-^

We were just there for New Years and paid $119 a night for a Hilton in DuPont. Thats $200 less per night than what we paid in Asheville, NC last April. Your real expense if for those who have to fly as National or Dulles arent hubs and flights can get pricey. I can definitely help with setting up a DC meet though. I'm from there, family is still there, we go often and have plenty of local hookups.
And out of curiosity are there age restriction on this event. I.e. 21+

I am super new to the forum, so I am not the one who should run with the ball on this or anything, but if we do go with DC I am happy to lend a hand with whatever I can (I did suggest DC originally, after all!)
I am outside of the city in Leesburg and am in the Tyson's Corner and Arlington areas pretty frequently for work, so I can handle some boots on the ground assistance if DC ends up as the consensus.
FYI, with the Metro system expanded Tysons might be another area to consider. Lots of convention space in about every price range you can imagine, and now there are two Metro stations that are accessible by foot from a lot of the spots in the area.
If people are tired of Chicago, I vote Vegas. Cheap flights, dirt cheap lodging, tons to do. Would give me a nice excuse to go back; haven't been in some time.I like you. They are 5 minutes from my house!
Philly kind of fits all the necessary criteria. Large enough airport and close proximity to the I95 mega dense population for easy driving for lots of people. Moderate lodging costs right in the heart of the city, plenty to do outside of the con, lots of good food (dalessandro's anyone?????).
DC isn't much more expensive than other large cities for lodging and there's plenty to do. I don't think you'd need to host it outside the city to keep costs down, but you could stay outside due to the metro. Flights aren't as cheap though, so that's a down side. Anyone from this area can drive to Philly instead. :p
The Rockies alone are enough to draw me to Denver.. don't care about anything else!
Indianapolis is pretty central.
Indianapolis is pretty central.

I vote for Flint. Super cheap lodging, and a lot of people would get to experience the feeling of possibly being gunned down in an alley for the first time!
Y'all come down to Texas. :))

4. It's warm in the winter.

This sounds like the best option so far.
I took a quick scroll through that collection folder, with all those vintage boards what made you buy a Blackwidow?

Buy?! :))
These were recycler finds. At least, the big ones were. The little one was something that Goodwill Austin was selling online. I fully believe in supporting the good work they do by buying their stuff. Plus, Razer Greens in good condition aren't so bad - I prefer them to Cherry MX Blues (higher actuation, lighter, less hysteresis).
Plus - I can't promise this at all but there could be a little field trip to a good vintage finds place in Kerrville (2 hours) or a recycling facility in Dallas (3 hours). If it happens I've got a car that can haul seven adults plus me.

Just so y'all know, NoVA is not expensive to visit. It's not as inexpensive as middle-of-nowhere Alabama, of course, but anywhere that's a massive destination for tourists tends to have artificially deflated prices for accommodations unless it's a luxury destination (see: Las Vegas, Atlantic City, Cancun, etc.). I've brought my parents here numerous times, and have put them in 4-star and 5-star hotels every single time and paid never more than $175 a night (for the Ritz Carlton), and typically closer to $120 a night.
There are lots of places where a convention could be held in VA or DC, but the smart choice would be to do it west of the city, not south, and definitely not inside. Look at Reston, Vienna, or Falls Church as possible central location points, which are all easily metro-accessible for people who'd like to venture into the city.

If you do this during the summer, I don't think you'll enjoy it nearly as much. Spring and fall are the best weather wise. Summer is hot, and winter can be anything.

Holy **** XMIT! Your collection is incredible! Much respect. It would be great if you will host it in Austin.
My son-in-law sets up trade conferences in the Austin area all the time and is willing to help if desired. What would our specific needs be?
But no more Uber in Austin :(
Haha yeah I was mostly joking about it. From what I have heard, it's a pretty hot topic of discussion in Austin. But no more Uber in Austin :(
Yeah, and no Lyft either, that is really terrible. But there are a bunch of Austin specific ride sharing services such as Fasten. If we end up doing something here I'd put together some information for guests including a list of ride shares. Best to install those apps before getting on the plane.
If you're not aware, Austin wanted Uber and Lyft to fingerprint their drivers ("think of the children" politics...) so they pulled out.
That's just in Austin, though. I live in Cedar Park and the venue is in Round Rock. They still have Uber and Lyft. But the airport is in Austin, as are the bus and train stations.
and unlike Vegas your not constantly harassed by prostitutes.
I would probably spend much of the day running demos since you need to be a member to use the machines.
I am definitely in support of anywhere in the northeast, especially Philly or NYC. I could definitely help organize/scout places/cook/etc, especially in NYC area. Lots of good brewerys, restaurants, record stores, multiple barcades and obviously a **** ton of tourist attractions. Hell, if we get a permit we could just set up in central park or something and just have a keyboard picnic.

FWIW, I'm not sure if I can commit to attending yet, but I'm a TS member as well, and wouldn't mind demoing. I'm mainly a metal guy, but have done the SBUs on all of the wood equipment at the SF shop, as well as several others.
there should be live-streaming option so people from other countries are able to join virtually

I live and work in Villanova, PA right outside Philly, and I work for Villanova university.
I'm volunteering my time and resources as an organizer if you guys need one.
I can host a keycon right here at Villanova. We have large spaces equipped with internet and streaming technologies for broadcasting classes and lectures, which we could use to live stream this event. It's also very easy to get to Villanova and has lots of parking that I'm sure I could arrange for us. I also live about 2 minutes from the university if we should need anything from my place. I can provide lodging for a few others at my place as well, if needed.
EDIT: There's also affordable lodging nearby.

We should start a city poll soon, try to have a location picked by mid february so keycon this year doesn't fizzle out like it did last year.Well so far we have a proposed organizer for philly and Austin.

If we don't see anymore options, I'll make a poll next week and we can go from there. I agree though, if this is going to happen we need to choose a location soon.
Sounds great to me. I'd be happy to put something together for Austin.

I'm sure there are some fellow keyboard enthusiasts at the shelter. :pDoes Austin have a decent homeless shelter? Maybe I can sleep there with my keyboards and artisans while the meetup is happening.

I'll try to put together a pitch now that I know how many people to account for. Stay tuned, folks.

Should we set a date for the city poll to go up?
I'd say we should try to have the poll up by the end of this coming weekend and then leave it open for 2ish weeks so we can have a city selected by the end of February. In the past keycon has been in May so that would give everyone 2ish months to set up travel plans (assuming we want Keycon to take place in May again).

I'd be willing to host in SF, if people would want to do it here (I know the Massdrop HQ keyboard meetup is also here). My apartment building has a rentable space that could definitely work well. Plus, I'm right next to BART.
Poll is up! Get those votes in. :thumb:Will do boss
:)
I think you mean this is a "discreet" poll, not a "discrete" one.
Voted. In May I almost certainly won't be able to make the Philly event. SF is more of a possibility. Austin is of course home.

I'm really hoping we aim for either early May or mid to late June, due to scheduling. Anything from the weekend of May 18th to the weekend of June 3rd is out for me.
Also for Philly, we can go to Yards Brewing and Victory beer Hall. Definitely places I would like to check out.
It looks like Philly is in the lead and Austin is trailing.
There's a meetup I was trying to plan with Booper for some time in May. There's a VA location in Maryland sponsored by GH member terrpn. The space is free and has internet, presentation space, and room for as many as we can possibly fit.
I'm pretty sure the location would still be available if we gave them a heads-up.

Yeah I've only got three real hangups with Philly:
1. I don't know if I'll be able to make it at all - May is a busy month and travel can be challenging.
2. I can't show you all the best part of my keyboard collection unless it's local. I can maybe bring one or two boards with me.
3. My recycling facility and vintage keyboard hookups are all here. I can't organize a field trip in Philly.
Other than that, it's a great town, easy to get to, easy to get around in, good food, not super expensive, lots of students. It's how I imagine New York was in like the 1980s.
If it ends up being in Philly and I do end up coming I might be able to work out something special but no promises!
Well after the city is decided we'll be voting on dates and I'm firmly in the "please no not may or first weekend of june" camp. I'm sure we can figure it all out :D
I promise to keep my word on wawa and tastykakes
I promise to keep my word on wawa and tastykakes
THE BEST PART OF MAKING IT TO PHILLY IM GONNA GET ME SOME RASPBERRY TEA FROM WAWA AND A SACK OF PEANUT BUTTER TASTYKAKES HO YEAH
Personally, I would prefer for this to occur in Austin, because I like the city and XMIT's collection and Texas BBQ, but I guess Philly is going to be the winner. The people have spoken!

That barely even counts as food, especially compared to some of the best BBQ around and local microbrews.
That's my guilty pleasures not my good food times food. :P I'll agree the food can't compare but there is still really good places to go. If you make it I'll take you!
It's got an odd cult following.
It's got an odd cult following.
I never got it, either. With the New York pineapple juice and hotdog thing, at least there's the sugar-protein high. (I mean, I find it gross, but there's a payoff, at least.)
Papaya juice!

My thoughts are we aim for mid to late June. That's a good lead on airfare and lodging costs. (and the only way I can make it lol)

Yeah. But we're still doing our meetups here in Austin and everyone is welcome to come down! I don't see any reason for this to have to be an exclusive event.
If you want to do one big thing in Philly and call it Keycon, sure, but our regular meetups in Austin are pretty awesome. There are giveaways, custom key caps for the events, and with Techshop we have a professional photo booth, CNC wood and metal working, a water jet, powder coating, sand blasting, injection molding, soldering stations, laser cutters... everything you need to build a board from scratch!
So again, come down for March 11th (though the airfares are super high due to SXSW, yikes!) and maybe for our next event in the late summer. :D

I voted June 9th-11th so it falls on my birthday. :thumb:
The June 30th through July 2nd will be terrible for travelling. The roadways will be congested and flights will be more costly.

Also the 26th-28th of may, memorial day.
What kinds of cool things will be at this event? Just got in to the hobby a few months ago. Thanks for planning as i am local to PHL.
Late June is winning. If that happens I *might* be able to make it out.
I don't know what sort of facilities are up there and thus don't know if I could host some event or demo. Would people be interested in hearing about controllers or converters? I've been meaning to dig into the internals of TMK a bit and could talk a little bit about it. Simple stuff like making key maps, flashing a Pro Micro, etc.

This is the weekend after my 21st birthday. LIT
as long as I am still living in the area for the summer.....
This is going to be my first KeyCon. I'm excited it's in Philly since I live here and would otherwise just stick to the local annual meet up. Do you guys make a schedule of events to distribute before the con?
Would be helpful to have an address or some kind of landmark so we know how close hotels will be to the Con.

Those are perfect man!
Thanks! These rooms have built-in streaming and they're 2 identical rooms right next to each other.

Will there is a differentiation between rooms? Like, demos/discussion/q&as in one room, general viewing and display in the other?

There will most likely be one room for boards and just hanging out and the other for demos and Q&A and events and such.
Would anyone be interested in getting a cap made for the event?

Gotcha, figured that would be the case. I've never been to one of these so I don't know the procedure. Do vendors need to register in any specific fashion or is not that formal?

That would be pretty cool actually. T-shirt would be nice too. Something simple with the logo.
Give away GH moderator position. They seem to be given out to anyone who asks anyways.

I am assuming at this point we can book hotels with confidence?
Excellent. I am going to do some research on rooms this evening or tomorrow. I will post here if I find some particularly good deals. I know from some preliminary research that there were some decent deals in King of Prussia, which (according to what I saw) is about 4 or 5 miles from the university.
Might be prime time to take a road trip. If I can make it, I'll definitely bring some fun stuff :)

I vote Indianapolis. I would 100% attend, and it's within about 4 hours of a whole bunch of major cities.

Would be down to go to a bar if closer tbh
Has keycon ever been in the west?
I would choose Austin Texas. Pretty centrally located, local for a lot of GHers, and most important (for me), close enough for me to visit my family. :)I'll be heading there in less than a week. :)) (Yeah I know it's in Philly this year)

Hey, I know I'm new (and will forever be a lurker), but I live in Philly and am planning on attending. I thought it might be fun to get some posters screen printed if enough people are interested in having something to take home.
I like screen prints and screen printing. I like the subtractive color quality of screen printing and the results it can achieve. I quickly mocked up this concept tonight in my office. It's inspired by the famous "LOVE" statue by Robert Indiana. This concept uses four colors. If enough people like it I'll have a friend (who actually knows how to do this sort of thing) take this draft and remake it the right way, fix the colors, rework it, etc. For now, enjoy. Comments and critique are welcome. Remember, it's just a concept and while I think it would be fun to take this further and get them printed, if people aren't into it I won't be hurt about it.Show Image(http://modsandends.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Keycon-Poster-Concept-663x1024.jpg)

You don't need to pay for admission but in the past there's been an option to donate to help pay for the venue, I'm not sure if anything like this has been set up for 2017 yet.

However, being part of the caravan means you are available to take part in a Hoff kidnapping if he can't get time off work to come.

You laugh like we're joking
I worked on the poster more tonight and am getting quotes from three screen printing shops. I've reduced it down to three colors; Grey, Blue and Red on Pink paper. Screens tend to run ~$40 each, with each "pull" of ink being ~$1. This makes the first poster cost ~$120, with each poster after that costing $3 (plus paper and ink). I'm going to round this up to $5 per poster as an estimate.
This means that if 20 people buy in the price per poster will be ~$11+tax.
If 30 people commit it would be ~$9+tax.
Because of that I'm going to hedge my bets and just put a price of $20 for people to commit. If we get enough people I'll drop the price accordingly to whatever quote I get.
I'm embedding a small version of the poster, but linking to the full size. Let me know if you're in or out by this upcoming Friday so I can decide whether or not I'm pulling the trigger on this.

Is there a place to be announced? I want to start booking my trip but I'm not sure where to stay to be close to the venue.Hello,
Im late to the party and just now read about this. Where in Philly is it, and what is price of admission?
Sorry for the lateness. Id love to go as I live in northern VA.
Bartley Hall in Villanova
You don't need to pay for admission but in the past there's been an option to donate to help pay for the venue, I'm not sure if anything like this has been set up for 2017 yet.

Are you the one building the switch tester with like, every switch you can find? I'd be excited to see it even if it's a work in progress.

PS: I got the Hungr Key!! Thanks!
So with the goal of making a sweet keyboard, I'm hoping I'll be able to acquire a frame, a set of switches and keycaps, and a popular controller... Will there be opportunity to purchase such things?
I plan to sell a few things personallyMy plan was to hopefully get my hands on another keyboard without dealing with shipping and all, or even a nice kit.

Best keyboard ever! :))
I also have one of those, I love the 2u esc. I'll trade you mine for the MX5000 so you can corner the market on them.
Lol, I have 2 of these already, but I sold one to a friend last night.
Do you know what time keycon will last till?
Boy did I just barely catch the train, didn't even realize KeyCon was being held somewhat close to me this year. I think I'll be able to make it work out though. Request the fri. the 23rd off from work & hit the road that morning. Philly is about a 5hr. drive from Pgh. so that should give me enough time to get into town, find a cheap room, & be ready to go for Sat morning. Starting to get a little psyched up for this but gotta make sure I can get the 23rd off for it all to work. :thumb:Just keep in mind its at villanova , not exactly Center City Philadelphia.

Good point, I may want to look into reserving a room somewhere beforehand. Thanks for the heads up! :)

In the past it's gone until 2 or 3 but people usually hangout after.
Okay, just to make sure I've got all of this correct, since the info is kind of scattered:
Location is Bartley Hall at Villanova University.
The event happens on Saturday, June 24th, from sometime in the morning to around mid-afternoon, plus probably socializing and going out afterwards.
So people who are traveling can: travel on Friday, keycon on Saturday, travel back on Sunday. Am I missing anything?
Perfect. I'll likely leave Monday as well, but it's good to know your options. Thanks!Okay, just to make sure I've got all of this correct, since the info is kind of scattered:

I'll be leaving on monday morning but that's because I have sunday plans.
Oh man :(. Ill be in Philly for a conference, but leaving Thursday.Noooo stayyyy :) come join us
Need a ride from NYC. Can pay for gas money/lunch. Can meet you at Newark/wherever.If you could get a train from penn station to Trenton NJ I could pick you up
I'm probably bringing just the one Filco. I sold the LZ and don't really care enough to bring any other boards (save the Realforce, but it's too special).
But let me know if you can give me a ride.
Should bring one board? I can bring two but I dont think id bring more than that.
I have my main for now which is my fc660c with rf alphas swapped in, hyperspheres, 55g domes, and the new hasu controller.
My second is my keycool 65percent, mx blues, hypefuse keycaps, and a purple spacebar.
I expect to bring a couple prototype F62 and F77 keyboards, some with the classic cases and some with the Ultra Compact cases - a variety of case colors too.
Maybe I will giveaway some of the non-functioning prototype Model F barrels.
The down side is that the production quality springs, keys, and inner assembly parts will not be ready in time so these will not be at the quality levels of the production keyboards.

Probably. If it's not posted here, it'll probably be there.
Only thing I'm not planning on seeing there is a few certain ultra rare kustoms.
hahah. If I had gone to last year's Philly meetup, I coulda brought 5 OTD's, but alas, they're all in China now. :D

I'm driving through and stopping for a few hours with the family on our way to Maine so timing and planning is important for me.

Right now things are fairly loose. There should be something soon though. Gonna reach out to interested presenters this week and get a feel for peoples' schedules so we can plan the day.

Villanova isn't a dry campus but we should check with our host before we bring beer into the classrooms!

* Will there be handtrucks available? I'm bringing a bit of stuff in a large bin so it'd be nice to easily transport it from my car to whatever building/room.

The varmilo board I won is unironically nice, too. Stabs were pre-lubed so they're super quiet.
Thanks again Att1cus :)

Yeah I really had fun yesterday! Was really nice to get to meet everyone in person and get to chat. Congrats again on the board man! That is a nice little souvenir.
Getting to try out the new F62 and F77 boards was awesome too. I really need to pick myself up one now.

You cant get much closer to NJ than eastern PA!
Considering some of the participants drove up to 12 hours to get there.
I suggest keeping track of the reddit/r/mechanicalkeyboards "meetup" thread at the top of their list. That seems to be a great place to find your local gatherings.
Thanks so much Att1cus for setting up an amazing event!
Thank you to everyone for showing up to my demo and tiny for her amazing camera work!

I hope they don't mind if I put some different keycaps on them. So, the build quality is very, very nice. The stabilized keys honestly have the best feel on the whole board. Stock cherry browns are stock cherry browns (wish I could lube them, but alas no cutouts, as expected). My biggest gripe is the LEDs make GMK sets unable to fully depress. I will probably end up having to file off the front edge of the LEDs due to this. Otherwise, the ability to swap control and caps lock OTG is great. I'm sure I'll really enjoy this board fully once I am removed of my LED problems.

How do you switch caps/control?
I will post pictures today, along with a short review. Like Fendent, I've already switched out the caps, but the stock caps are honestly pretty great either way.
