Thic Thock Marshmallow Switch

Marshmallow will be a linear switch that comes with delicious color combo that resembles, well, marshmallow. We offer this marvelous switches with incredibly bouncy and cushiony progressive spring from Thic Thock MP Series to enhance the typing experience as well as muting the ping sound that can be often found in many switches with their stock springs. Marshmallow itself is smooth enough that some of the private testers had given feedback that even without lubrication, it is still smooth enough to be used right away. (We are planning to send more samples out to different influencers for further reviews)

Just in case someone is interested in this, Durock is not affiliated with the manufacture or production of Marshmallow. We invest onto our own factory for creating the switch from molding to leafs and legs.

Origin

Lots of people are discussing around the topic of which factory is responsible for manufacturing Marshmallow, why is it not disclosed yet. We are very wary of this and simply because we are cautious on this sensitive topic, we would like to dedicate one huge context of this as part of the update.

As said, Durock is not affiliated with our production of the switch. So, what does this mean exactly? This means that during the whole process from designing the housing, leaf and stem, Durock had/has no part in it, nor did we use Durock’s samples or approach them at all. This is a genuine new stuff that comes straight from us. Some might ask why did we explicitly mention this in the first place? It’s because we want to let everyone who is interested in this switch to acknowledge that we are the one who is responsible for the decision making on the design and promotions, no third party was involved.

Then, let’s talk about the factory. We are in partnership with JWK. Who is JWK? JWK was responsible for manufacturing one of the most favorable switches – T1. To my knowledge, there are 2 factories who are responsible for manufacturing T1(although I might be ill informed), whether JWK was in partnership with Durock or not is not of our concern, nor we could do anything about it if it is. More importantly, the drama the shrouds around Durock or other related parties is something that has already been in the past. All parties involved have moved on and things have been sorted out on their own ways. Whether the manufacturer, or the producer, or the promoter, or whoever you think should be held ethically accountable should be you to decide.

That said, we are a merchant who approached the manufacturer – a.k.a. the factory directly and bought the necessary equipment to initiate our project. So JWK acts as an OEM – Original Equipment Manufacturer, which means they are only responsible to execute the design we handed over to them and they quoted us a fee for manufacturing the switches. That’s it on their part. Afterwards, from brand building, promotions and shipping will all be on our own hands. This also explains why we are able to brand our brand logo on the top housing of the switch instead of other brand logos.

I hope this explain clearly on the relationship between us and our manufacturer, we would also be grateful and appreciate if the following discussion will not be spun off to drama or Marshmallow-unrelated topics. Cheers!

Some quick FAQ for this section
Q: Why has the price gone up?
A: 4.8 per 10 pieces was a temporary price point. We set it to 4.8 not to bait you into biting the deal. It’s because it was an achievable price point on our part. Alpha stage sample was good, but we pushed it further, just as mentioned in Top Clack’s first impression, we were tuning, calibrating the machines to make the tolerance slimmer, in hopes of minimizing the “wobbliness”; and other refinement on the nitty gritty such as upgrading the spring, streamlining the stem and rails and etc. that will improve the overall experience. This inevitably increased our production cost and thus the adjustment of price point. To compensate this adjustment, we’ve lowered the minimum order quantity so that people who are interested only to get enough for their build wouldn’t have to waste their money on extra switches.

Q: What does minimum order quantity means?
A: It means that’s the least number of switches you must order. Let say you want 110, in the site, you would have to only add “11” into the cart, simple as that. Any order I receive from the back end that is below “6” – 60 switches will be disregarded.

Q: What so special about the fact that it is not factory lubed?
A: I believe for most of the buyers, they want to lube their switches to suiting to their own tastes. This means most of the time they would have to delube the switches before they could apply their favorite lubrications onto it. We value this kind of dedication and understand how tedious it can be when it comes to delubing switches. Thus, we offer unlubed switches on the fly. Other than that, we are confident that even if factory lubrication is not applied on it, it is still smooth enough that it can be used right away.

Q: Why was the starting date of GB postponed?
A: We want to let the influencers have the samples on hand and review them, release the reviews, hopefully during the group buy. In order to align their schedules, we figured by postponing the starting of the GB date would help public to have a greater chance on knowing more about the switches before they commit to making purchases. Although this is not a guarantee that their reviews will be out during the GB, this is the least we can do to increase the probability of public having access to the reviews during the GB period.

Q: What does V2 means?
A: We have upgraded our spring material from Korean import material to Japan. The result is that it provides firmer and better spring structure and enhance the overall typing experience.

Frequently Asked Questions and Answers

Q: Why did Jeff – I only receive a handful of samples – 6 to be exact, as mentioned in Discord?
A: The small batch sample was not meant for public disclosure. It was a batch that was meant for us to confirming the colors and technical specs were held up to our standard. If we put it in a term of game development, there are 3 phases, Alpha, Beta, Release. We were at Alpha phase, but it was good and promising enough that we were confident even if we sent out these “Alpha” samples to influencers, we would still receive a positive feedback. That said, as mentioned numerous times in our Discord, we’ve already placed another larger but not too large batch for more to test it out. That’s what we usually call “Beta” and are often the stage where producer of switch receives large batch of samples and send them out to different parties.

Q: Did you cherry picked 2 perfect samples and sent them to Brian?
A: As mentioned in the Discord and above, I had only 6 samples in total. It was unfortunate that I could only send Brian 2 switches. In fact, I only have 2 left on hand because some of them were also given to others to test out. And as aforementioned, this is an “Alpha” stage product, we didn’t plan to send them out to others until we had it on hands and figured its actually good enough to be sent out. But rest assured, I will be sending a batch to Brian soon where he will be able to test it out thoroughly on a full board assembly. We hope the product can speak for itself, so I’m not self-promoting further or try to prove to you guys that the other 4 are just as good as the 2 I sent to Brian. Time will tell.

Q: Why is that the price is so low and the MOQ is that low as well?
A: We are adjusting the price and as for the low MOQ – it’s because that we were uncertain how the market will perceive this new product; we were a bit pessimistic but we really want to carry this out and would rather eat up another hidden MOQ by ourselves to prepare ourselves for the worst case, if there is.

Q: Will there be proxies for Marshmallow?
A: We are in negotiation and eager to make it happen. But worst case, if we do not have a proxy for the GB, we ship worldwide, so don’t worry. We have also recently adjusted our shipping rate, it should be a bit, if not a lot more friendly to overseas buyers. (EU, AU confirmed)

Q: Ne Holy Molly (Replacing Marshmallow’s stem with Halo True/Clear) Avail?
A: Well, I personally tried it and to be frank, it may disappoint you. I cannot say for sure the acoustics side is good or not because I do not have enough samples to warrant a solid test result. But the feel though, the tactile bump isn’t as sharp as HP. So, if you’re a fan of not-so-sharp HP, Holy Molly might be the way. And might I say it’s pretty good looking with the light purple housing with halo stem on it. Yummy.

Q: Is it possible to add different weight variant(s)?
A: Yes and No. “Yes” as in you could order separately so that you could receive the spring before the switch arrives. Although that may cost you double the shipping fee. “No” as in we are not planning to add weight variant to Marshmallow GB, we will however release more variants in the future IF the switch does receive A LOT of love.

Q: Is there other color variant(s) of Marshmallow in the future?
A: It depends on the reception of Marshmallow, if it is VERY positive and become an instant hit in the market, not only we will offer other color variant, but also, we will be making Marshmallow as our long standing in stock item on site!

Q: Will there be extras for Marshmallow after the GB?
A: I’m planning to get some more extras. As for how many, it would likely depend on how many orders we are receiving. Tuned in our Discord or newsletter for more updates regarding this!

Q: Will there be a discount if I’m ordering a lot of marshmallows?
A: It is possible if you are looking to commit a bulk order for local members or yourself, you will have to meet the MOQ though; please contact Jeff in regard to this issue.

Q: Who will be reviewing the Marshmallow besides Top Clack?
A: We have not decided yet because it depends on how many samples I’m receiving. I know a lot of you have been asking if Nathan is receiving samples. The answer is yes. The sample had been mailed out.

Q: Will you send some samples to non-influencers?
A: Yes, unfortunately since there are only a handful of samples to spare, it has been offered to different members in our Discord server via raffle.

Q: Will you release tactile/silent/other switches in the future?
A: This is our plan. If we have a successful run for Marshmallow, we already have plans for the other switches in our pocket. And, they are really good looking and tasty as well.

Q: How to join collaboration sales?
A: You will have to be in Marshmallow group buy to be eligible for entering the collaboration sales.

Oh boy, I'm a simple man. I see pink switches I buy them.

Can you give us more insight into which will be the manufacturer of these switches, or how do they compare to more known linears, say, Gateron Yellows, Retooled Blacks, Tealios, and so on?

Also, a force curve of the said new springs would be a good thing? How does the "cushioned" feel you say is implemented?

Comparison of other linears will be done with influencers who will be receiving the samples; it'd be fair for them to review it other than us doing that.
We have not publicly announced this yet, but here you go - we authorize Punchy as one of our sales channels, which means Punchy spring is essentially our spring. That said, there is an old article, written by a community member that can be used as a reference for the spring - https://www.keebtalk.com/t/punchy-springs/5251
Though, please note that we have revised the spring and the weight tolerance is much more slimmer and the material used for the spring is more premium (as in it was originally sourced from Korea, it is now from Japan)

Interested in seeing the switch pins and overall dimensions in comparison to other switches out there.

I have issues with some custom Gateron switches being a bit larger than original Cherry spec.  Similarly, the YOK and NK cream switches are just too large and are a pain to get into switch plates that are cut precisely to spec.

Also, what do the pins look like?  A lot of new switches being made have thin pins.  It's fine for soldering, but I often find these thin pins cause switches to chatter and/or not register in Kailh hot-swap sockets that have been broken in by a few switch swaps.

Just need more detail.  The color is great.

Not that I need a full accounting here, but I'm kinda curious about how you can run an MOQ that would be met at $4,800 and still make your own molds? Aren't molds more than that alone?

I think the molds are already (to some degree) made and self-funded, given that they have prototypes?

We have negotiated with the factory on some terms and conditions. We had invested into the mold before the IC started, but it takes a certain MOQ to at least let the factory or stakeholders feel secure enough that this is a feasible project, even though internally we are confident with the quality.

Personally prefer lighter springs so would love to see these have a lighter spring options too! Maybe somewhere in 62g-65g?  ;D

This question has been answered in the discord.

Q: Possible to add other weight?
A: Sorry, unfortunately we want to stick to the MP68 for Marshmallow debut. However, you can add our springs to the cart with your order OR order separately so you can get it before the fulfillment of Marshmallow.

Updates:
31-10
Sorry for the dead silence in here for a really long time. Though, I've been working hard to make this happen as soon as possible! There are lots of questions surrounding the group buy, with the upcoming BIG update, I believe most of the concerns and questions will be dispersed. Some great news are also inbound to the next update, if not the next next update - which I believe would be great additions to the community.
Some teasers for the goodies
- Collabs
- Possible Vendor announcement
- FAQ

What are the wobble tolerances on these?

As per Top Clack's first impression, it is steadier than most of the MX clones in the market, falling short to Inks and Tealios.

It'll be 5 pins. I will take a pictures of the pins in the upcoming updates.

Obviously the board type will matter, so it's hardly scientific, but is there any chance we could get a sound test of some sort before the GB launches?

Unprofessional un-lubed sound test can be found in our Discord!

Any info on the Travel distance for actuation? :)

I will be conducting the experiment these days, and will enclose the details in the upcoming update as well.

new to keyboards in general, i love the look of the switches but is it possible to lower the actuation force? would I just swap the spring? :o looking for something similar to reds/yellows but these look lovely.

If you want to lower the actuation force then, yes, all you'd need to do is swap the spring to a lighter spring.

That said, at 68g these should be very close in weight to gat yellows, but heavier than gat reds.

We would consider open this option when it is well received in the GB and we decided to stock it on site for long standing item.
For GB, we're not planning to do so because it would complicate the logistic matter by a lot. Sorry man, but thanks for the suggestion!

I am a little confused, I was under the impression that gat reds are 45g and yellows are 50g. Am I misunderstanding something regarding the weight of these Thic Thock switches? :o

45g and 50g are probably actuation force, which is usually what switch manufacturers advertise. aftermarket springs are all bottom out force, which is higher. in the case of gateron, i believe gat reds should be 55g bottom out, and yellows 60g bottom out (dont quote me on these numbers tho)

So the actuation force was changed to ~50g, does that also mean the spring weight was changed?

Actuation is not Bottom Out force

I know but for example gateron black inks has a acutation force of 60g and bottom out of 70g. So I figured if you changed the acutation you might have changed the bottom out as well.

We employ progressive spring into Marshmallow, the actuation force is not comparable with Inks or other linear that employs linear spring
