why havent they made...
« on: Tue, 05 October 2010, 10:47:17 »
So all the technology for this is already in place, but they havent made it yet.

Wireless remote control camera, linked to your laptop.

Scenario: you're taking pictures of keyboards in your room.

1. We already have Eye-fi, which is brilliant, which is an sd-card that wirelessly transmits photos from the camera to your laptop.
2. We already have remote control software for cameras, if you tether the camera to your laptop via usb, you can control all its settings and activate it from the laptop. Remote control. Great for studios.

So: Why dont they build eye-fi directly into the camera, and then expand its functionality so you no longer need the usb *corded* tether for remote control?

Wireless-everything on the camera. Remote control and transfer images, both. Wouldnt this be perfect for studio work?

And while they're at it, why dont they make it 3g too? We already have wifi/3g even on ebook readers. Why not on cameras? So when  you're out in the field taking pictures, they just instantly transfer to the cloud or to your home computer. The "endless sd card".

Why do camera companies lag so far behind with technologies such as this?

This stuff is everywhere.  Shoot, even Lightroom3 allows me to shoot tethered USB2.  Shoot.

ya i'm talking about untethered remote control for DSLRs (or whatever they call them these days). I can shoot (and remote control) tethered with my canon right now (yea i'm an amateur).  Why not untethered? all the technology is there if camera companies would just get off their ass and build it into the camera.

yes, something like that - except why not build the receiver into the camera, and build the transmitter into a computer software program thats using the laptops wifi.

so that, you know, when mossad snaps pics of their successful 9/11 attack from nearby rooftops, they dont have to be there and get caught. ;-D

While I might not be as passionate as you, I fully agree.  "The cloud" is dumb.  If you don't want to learn enough about what "the cloud" is to know it's more than "a cloud," well...  Maybe those people need to store their bank statements, SSNs, and other personal information on my "cloud."

These people probably believe in Creationism, too.

Well you see the cloud is an advanced computing term.  It is the magical place where all information goes to when it comes out of your computer and goes into the wall jackmodem.  It's where information is stored before you download it with your explorer onto your intertubes.

See Fig. 1 below:

Fig. 1

The Cloud.  It's what MAKES the internets.

They couldn't even come up with a better name for it either.  "The cloud" just sounds like an adjective for something you can't describe.  At least people came up with "god," and the Greeks even had the myths.  We just say, "oh, I store a bunch of random **** in the cloud."

Well, there's that.  Still, we should have an award for 10k, it's quite a milestone.  Or maybe just a temporary ban every 10k saying get a life.  Ripster would be gone way too much though...

How am I still below 600?  I am disappoint.

Quote from: kishy;230109
It's not, by far, a new term. Hipsters shouldn't be allowed to use it though.

That's the problem.  They're usually the only ones who DO use it, and thus a majority of those who use it have no idea what it means.  Thus my dissertation above.

I work with some of them....works me up a lot cause I try and reason with them.  Can't be done.

AT&T has their own name for the cloud.  Maybe nerds aren't creative (outside of RPGs), but at least nerds aren't all mindless bureaucratic corptards.

I personally view the "cloud" as more of the "risk" or "vortex".  You never know when a strong wind's gonna blow all your private data away.  Lost forever, or worse, drifted across borders so somebody/anybody else can do whatever they want with it.  Same applies for any software you buy - if it runs in the cloud then there's no real guarantee you'll ever be able to run (or reinstall) it tomorrow.

yea but dude these are all external solutions, i'm talking about building it into the cameras. I dont get why they havent been baked-in yet. All the technology is obviously there, why not bake it into the camera? Camera companies seem really resistant to baking it in. and i dont get that.

that said, thanks for the links, i'm checking them out. Wish they were all built into the cam though.

It's yet another attempt to trick people into using thin clients connected to centralised computing. Only this time connected via the Internet. Yawn. When will they learn/accept that people want power on their desktops and control of their own data?

Welly, I'm inclined to believe it's the same thing Apple likes to do with iPods (TBH, I think it kind of went out the window with the Touch though)

Provide a minimal number of included features and, in doing so, create a market for accessories to rip people off with (ex with the iPod would be FM radio).

thats probably true. well then let me go on record to say I'm agin it!
in case it isnt clear. I'm agin it! I"m agin it!

it makes the camera industry look like they're terribly behind the times (like, er, apple products are if you discount their looks ;)

Radio isn't baked into cameras because the moment they integrate anything which radiates it's gotta go through FCC regulations. Not only is this another hassle, but it's a delay. Worst of all, it means all your competitors can learn all about your FCCID registered product through an OET search. Your customers (ie, the public) can too, but you can lawyer a few delays before the OET records get released into public domain - still any American citizen with $$ can get the info, so claim your FCC laws.

Apple doesn't integrate FM radio into iToys because
  • They want to make money from the iSubscriptions you're forced to buy
  • More tech adds more cost/complexity, and maybe even sucks a little battery life. This hits Apple each time they take another step along their planned revision/upgrade path (imagine the public outcry when the next model removes an existing feature!)
  • They expect/know the iToys will pwn the market anyhow, so why bother spending more on engineers and parts?
  • Just because they can. ****ers.
Clouds are for losers. Become dependent on the whims of a provider for life? Imagine a world where you couldn't own any CDs, DVDs, or HDDs ... just a basic OS with tons of RAM; all content downloaded per use/view from a provider.

Ah, isn't the whole point behind professional cameras that you can mix & match all your lenses and accessories as desired?  Why would you [strike]integrate[/strike] bake a zoom lens into the camera when most pictures taken by most people most of the time would use a normal lens?

Ahem, yeah, cloud is in fact a technical term for, in essence, networks outside of your control that are in between you and where you want to be...more or less.

The funny thing is that the cloud symbol has very frequently been used for decades for networks that we can't be bothered to draw, and of course the Internet. I guess some management type woke up at the wrong point in a PowerPoint presentation and came away with the idea that the Internet sat on a puffy cloud or something.
Keyboards: Unicomp UB40T56 with JP3 removed, Unicomp UB4044A, Filco Tenkeyless Brown (with pink highlights), Access AKE1223231, IBM DisplayWriter, Das Keyboard III, and a few others.

I agree.  Every time I've reported a price I've been attacked for it.  I've decided to never state prices > $20 unless I'm shopping (or more accurately, letting others go shopping) for better deals ...

This time I'll make an exception.
Ripster's price quote was accurate, assuming you're buying through the Cyborg site and an American distributor, otherwise it'll likely cost you more.  $130 is about middle of the road for "high end" gaming mice, and peanuts compared to some of the (professional grade) digitizers and tablets.  (I actually use a Ghost MX8000, not hardware-reconfigurable, but better specs, better price, ~$60 though I paid about $80 going through foreign channels.)

Now ... :focus:
