Keyboardio Kickstarter is NOW + Meetups in 23 cities
« on: Tue, 09 June 2015, 01:57:23 »

I'm thrilled to

http://keyboard.io/kickstarter

We're spending June and July driving about 9000 miles and hosting meetups in 23 cities across North America. We'll have prototype Model 01 keyboards to play with, as well as lots and lots of stickers. We've started to reach out to hackerspaces and companies along our route who might be able to host us and should have locations to announce by next Monday. The plan for each stop is to let folks check out the Model 01, maybe give a talk about how to build your own keyboard or your own keyboard startup, and hang out!

Essentially, we're bringing a little bit of KeyCon to cities all across the US and Canada. We'll be making the meetup signup URLs public when we launch the campaign next week, but for now, our mailing list and GH are getting first crack at RSVPs.

this means that we are finally see more of the model 01??? What i like to see is:

- the tenting mechanism (so far is a real mistery)
- full split mode (if there is one)
- a video showing someone typing (can you rest your hands on the wood?? does the palm button get in the way??)
- the "any" button in action!
- and most important, can i just buy one rigth now??? (screw the kickstarter!, give an expensive hand made model  ;D)

Photo shoot is tomorrow :)

Tenting: You'll see what we have today. We're redesigning for production. (Going back to what we did for an earlier prototype. Not happy with it yet.)
Full split mode: https://twitter.com/keyboardio/status/579067010757177345 (More pix coming.)
Video showing someone typing: We'll have stills for the campaign, but 'somebody typing' videos creep me out a lot. I'm sure someone will shoot one at a meetup.
Any key: Right now, it's not mapped. We're waiting for you to map it to something :)
Buy one now: You missed your chance. We asked folks on the mailing list to tell us if they wanted (very) expensive hand-made units six months ago. There just aren't enough to go around. :/

Awesome guys!

Been waiting for the kickstarter project and here it is.

But what is most amazing, the tour! Thinking, argghhh bummer, US coast to coast to, no chance they'll visit Canada and if so, gonna be somewhere far away that'll need a 4 hour flight. But no!!!!!! at Matias in Newmarket Ontario. 5 min. away! Can't believe it.

Told my wife today we'lll be going to our first keyboard show/presentation June 22nd :) Hope to see you guys soon and can't wait to try it out!

We'll be making the mountings specs public, so folks can craft aftermarket cases they love.

As a bit of background, it actually came out of needing a curved guard around the top keys and wanting to provide generous palmrests that don't bite into your hand. The butterfly design was a happy accident. Most folks we've talked to love it, but of course, no one keyboard is perfect for everyone.

I'd love to know more about what you don't like about the design and what you'd design to replace it if you had a free hand.

Best,
Jesse

The problem is it looks like a butterfly.

The original prototype struck a perfect balance between wood and metal so that it looked looked more like a mechanical object

Another example of mixed wood and metal

Currently, there are no hard angles to complement the soft curves, so it looks like a really expensive salad bowl from Whole Foods.

The typing parts in the video looks really awkward to me, with the keyboard looking very large and big spacing between fingers, but that might just be the video (or a person with small hands), so I'm looking forward to hearing geekhackers opinions on how the keyboard feels (europe here  :(). Other than that I'm very hyped and have been following the project almost since the start - backed it already in hopes of deletaging my TECK to secondary keyboard and stop using my Das (staggered rows, nty!)

That explains it! Getting some decent typing footage in an update would be cool.

I’d love to see some footage of someone using half a keyboardio as a game controller, some footage of someone using one with photoshop, some footage of someone using one with vim or emacs, etc.

Ideally it would be possible to show both a top-view video of the hands moving on keyboard/mouse and a simultaneous shot of what’s happening on screen.

Probably pretty tough to find an expert who has customized one of these to be maximally efficient yet though.

It's not generally doable without remapping. I've actually recently tried to use half a split(but otherwise ANSI) keyboard for gaming to give feedback on doing just that for a company and found most control schemes ended up using at least *something* from the other side of the board.

But remapping does make that somewhat trivial as long as enough keys are present, whether in game(assuming normal scancodes are being sent) or out of game. Some games you're not going to get everything there's a key for on one side(The Neverwinter MMO, which I play, for example, uses almost every single alpha key to bring up *something*, and most of the numbers besides.)

Split keyboards for gaming are nice though. Bring the mouse in closer, get the half you're using at just the right angle and tilt without stabbing yourself in the gut with your keyboard.

Getting some decent typing footage in an update would be cool.
++

Id love to see some footage of someone using half a keyboardio as a game controller, some footage of someone using one with photoshop, some footage of someone using one with vim or emacs, etc.

Ideally it would be possible to show both a top-view video of the hands moving on keyboard/mouse and a simultaneous shot of whats happening on screen.

Probably pretty tough to find an expert who has customized one of these to be maximally efficient yet though.

That'd be pretty cool. Can you point me at examples of this being done for another keyboard?

It's not generally doable without remapping. ...

Oh, no, I just meant the video recording thing

Congratulations on the reaching your fundraising goal. I'm a bit surprised by the low cost for getting a keyboard with all of the features you're building into it. Will that be the retail price as well?

We're not committing to a retail/street price until we have units manufactured. At this price, we're confident that we can make the keyboards as nicely as they deserve to be made. The 120k goal is what we needed to hit for that to be true. It is not, of course, the goal we'd need to hit to be able to pay ourselves even minimum wage. We've costed out the production at various volumes and have a sense of where the sweet spots are. Making our own keys is incredibly expensive in low volumes because we need to make injection molds. But at high volumes, the per-unit cost is so low that it's much, much less expensive than buying someone else's caps.

I went to the meet-up in Somerville, MA tonight. I like the keyboard, for the most part. I think the contours of the existing keycaps are a bit too much, but Jesse did say at the meet-up that they're still working on finalizing the keycaps. I really love the palm keys and their usage as momentary layer switch (I wonder if I could mod my ErgoDox to have these keys).

One thing I did suggest to Jesse was to put a set (three) of tripod-compat threaded holes on the bottom on each half. This way, those holes could be used with the mating plate with captured screws to form a single unit. The keyboard could include a flat plate and tented plate, like it does right now. Additionally, it would be nice if they could also include a couple "stands" that would screw into those threaded holes for "split and tented". And those same threaded holes would allow small tripods to be used for more adjustability, much like the Matias Ergo Pro.

I have some small qualms with the logical layout/placement of some of the keys, but all that can be changed with the firmware, so I'm not super concerned about it. I think getting the physical layout correct is more important, and Jesse is very close, in my opinion.

I played with the prototype at one of the SF meetups, that was a highpoint.

Outstanding methodology with the criss-crossing of 'merica, and promoting the GH way. I'm jelly.

Obra, I was wondering why you'd only put 4 thumb keys on the keyboard and not 5?
See:

Those 2 extra keys on the thumb "row" are easily reached* and it would be so cool to have an extra layer key, or any kind of key, on that row.

* If we take a regular keyboard for instance, a touch typist can still comfortably reach the left Alt key using his left thumb. The left Alt key, compared to the modified Model 01 image above, is even farther away from the thumb without leaving the home row. Similarly, the Ergodox has only four comfortable thumb keys, you can see that they're almost as far away from the thumb as the alt key of a regular keyboard:

My question is, what was your reasoning against putting that extra key? There's plenty of space, looks like it would perfectly fit in there...

I hope it wasn't because of aesthetics or that the number of keys had to be a exponentiation with base 2.

I don't think space is the issue... I think it's just the ergonomics and position of the keys.

I don't think space is the issue... I think it's just the ergonomics and position of the keys.

That's what I've been trying to say. That extra key would still be comfortable. Thus, it would be ergonomic.

I made a mistake there. Comfortability does not necessarily equal Ergonomy.

Regarding the keyboardio, I do not think there'd be any problem though.

To be completely honest, I have not tried out the Model 01 personally, nor have I ever used an Ergodox (I have been saving money for it actually, until the Model 01 has been announced, which I plan on getting now instead of the Ergodox).

However, I did print out a 1:1 scale on paper of the Ergodox and played around with it (a lot). Those 4 thumb keys (see the previous Ergodox image) are fairly reachable.

That fifth key on the Model 01 would still be far better off than those of the Ergodox, in terms of comfortable position. That is what I believe.

We had a 5th key on a number of the prototypes. We actually had six on a few. We couldn't get them positioned comfortably for most users. Even 4 is too much of a stretch for some folks with 19mm spacing. (We'll be tightening up the arc some for production.)

There's also the side issue that it's a lot easier to distinguish 4 keys by feel than 5.

After seeing the first 2 days of kickstart results, my estimate was that you’d hit 1500–2000 keyboards preordered by the end. Looks like you’re right on track, at about ~1350 so far. Hope you see a surge in the last couple days, but either way looks like it should be enough orders to at least cover costs and not bankrupt anyone.

Then hopefully production goes smoothly, people get their keyboards faster than expected and rave reviews start coming in, and you can make some profit on v1.1, with the keycap tooling and much of the other design/development work all paid for. :-)
