When was the last time you were in the ocean?
« on: Mon, 28 October 2024, 22:59:58 »
I vacationed in Florida less than a year ago, but prior to that trip it had been nearly 25 years since I dipped even a toe into the ocean.

Is there anyone on GH who has never been in the Ocean?

As a kid my family vacationed at the beach "most" years. As an adult I have gone there about once every 3-5 years, except for the 5 years I lived in Tampa Florida when I went about every other week from about April-to-October.

When my kids were younger (0-15) we also went to the beach almost every summer.

Today it has been at least 10 years since I was immersed in salt water. I miss it!

Trump and his fellow Republicans are committed to keeping it that way — and, if their slim Congressional majorities can stick together, to do even more for those who need it the least. As one small example, the overall corporate tax rate could drop to 20%; domestic manufacturers could do even better, ending up with an effective corporate rate of 15%. I live and grew up as far away from salt water as one could likely live. Been to the Pacific once 15 years. Beach was full of broken clam/shell which was less than fun. I did get a second chance to see saltwater in Nice, which more picturesque. I would love to see Nice again.

Tp4' has veggie blood, which is scientifically proven to provide 700% the cancer cell killing power. Even under non-ideal indoor operational mode, Tp4 has stronger immunity than the average hughmahn.

Does TP4 not have a vice they indulge in? Soda, Coke, Weed, Booze, Nitrous, candy?

One would think someone has some dopamine fuel they partake in, but knowingly acknowledge as "not good" for them.

Vices aren't inherently bad. Overuse and reliance on them, sure. Just curious how others cope. I am very aware of what I do to "regulate" myself in ways that make me more comfortable and can simultaneously go, this is objectively bad for me, but I am here on earth to do nothin more than obtain pleasure before I die off.

I don't see the value in running my life as if I want to live until I am 130 year old by forcing myself to do what I don't want to do (within limits) or more of, not do/eat/etc certain things because they are "bad".

I would love to see Nice again.

Nice and the whole Côte d'Azur are stunningly beautiful and chill. I remember peering down from my hotel balcony and seeing a model nude sunbathing on a pier floating above pure turquoise water. When you're like 11 that is an amazing sight. Also vividly remember a small medieval city called Eze that was unbelievably picturesque.

I honestly don't know. It is possible I did it in childhood, but it wasn't often.
Ever since I became a teenager I've felt uneasy about showing my body in public, and after surgeries even less so, so I never ever do that.

I'm not that big of a fan of swimming these days, so the last time was a year ago in Tenerife.

The first time in the salt water was about 25 years ago, but that wasn't an ocean.
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Been quite awhile for me personally & the last two time I did actually make it to a beach they were both less than ideal. The 2nd last time I was working as a traveling carpenter & got sent to do some minor repairs on a Petsmart in Destin, FL. The job ended up just being changing a light switch & pulling the P trap on a sink to unclog it. At that point I had two choices, I could call my project manager to let him know it was done & head to the next city, or let him think it was a job that took up the best part of the day & spend the rest of the day at the beach. I choose the latter. ;) Then the last time I was at the beach is when I went down to Tampa, FL for the company I was working for at the time & paint U-haul Self Storage units. The one day our boss treated us to a day at a bar on the beach. Well I'm not a drinker & wasn't particularly fond of my co-workers or boss so while I made the best of it, I could've had a much better time around people I got along with better. Been thinking of taking a vacation to a beach this winter or next though.

I mean you do you TP, but letting fear of things dictate where & when you go or what you do is a surefire way to miss out on some the best things life has to offer IMHO.

This isn't fear, it's defiance of Death Spiral capitalism,

- Sell food that makes people sick,

- Sell Treatments for the sickness,

- NEVER cure the disease,

- Sell treatments till the day they die,

- At the same time make their kids sick.

While I agree with your points, there is nothing there that would stop someone from getting out & enjoying themselves from time to time. To me defiance would be more going out in the world while still holding yourself to your beliefs, not hiding away from all of that. Were all gonna get sick & die at some point, for me I'd sure hate to be on my deathbed regretting the stuff I never did because of the BS way the world is run nowadays. Again though just playing devil's advocate here, you do what you think is best for you man.

Nothing makes me feel more alive and invigorated than spending time in fresh air and sunshine.
And I am extremely fortunate to live within half an hour's drive of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Woody mountains are probably my favorite of Earth's biomes. I often miss Colorado where a good remote hike was always a 25 minute drive away.

Last time was 2015 when I went snorkeling in Indonesia. I hate going to a beach for a typical beach day, since it bores me out of my mind and I don't like the heat, plus it gives you skin cancer. And sea water is gross.

I've been like twice this summer and I'm not really much of an ocean person and never go to the beach alone. Oceanwater is kind of dirty in a lot of places so honestly I don't feel like the experience is that nice unless you're in a super calm and pristine area, or you're doing a water activity

It's dirty EVERYWHERE,  Industrial/Farming runoff + massive radiation leeching.

It's impossible to test for because they don't test every-where every-day, you're rolling the dice. Heavy fecal contamination/ bacteria washes in and out. Diesel Tar, etc, etc.
