Post by: irendulic on Fri, 07 March 2014, 19:21:31
Hello,

if there are any other IBM SSK II rubber dome fans out there, here's a nice deal, 48$ shipped brand new ones.

excellent!

I believe someone was looking for just this a while back. It may be a rubber dome, but it's no cheapo low end rubber dome.

I wonder how hard it would be to take it apart and modify it to a buckling spring variant...

It'd probably be much easier to buy a black M13, and mod it to a TKL with a Trackpoint. One day, I'll do this to my own.

basically impossible

These use scissor switches, so you'd need a new case (taller for BS switches), new keycaps, new springs/hammers. I guess you could re-use most of the matrix and controller, but there's not really a point since fabricating the rest is hard / expensive.

It would be easier to build a BS keyboard from the ground up.

Or mod a SSK or AT model F (or F122 (http://www.sethstorm.net/images/keyboards/6110668-F13.jpg)) to add a trackpoint.

Is there a guide/thread on that mod?

I have some F122s inbound..... and trackpoint would be perfection!

The last one you posted. It's only slightly more than what I paid for my Year of the Tiger Ducky with an extra set of caps back in 2011.

Don't forget the predecessor of this keyboard, which is not the buckling spring Model M, but the buckling rubber sleve M4-1.

(a bit OT, but...)
Haven't made one, but I could if you wish.

The short of it is:
Obtained keys from an M13 (black or white will do)
Redid the keyboard to ANSI layout
Obtained a trackstick assembly from an EnduraPro
Shaved down the B key to fit the stick (to get rid of the overhang)
Installed the stick, fastening it between barrels with extra-stick (3M VHB) tape
Put the controller in the far upper right
Removed DIP switch slot, feeding usb cable through that
