[GB] SA Espresso | GB Closed

SA Espresso

Welcome to the GB of SA Espresso.
A keycap set inspired by the rich colors of an espresso, from the dark brown of coffee beans to the caramel-like layer of crema that rises to the top of a perfect shot.

GB April 13th - May 14th 2021

Vendors

US: Kono
EU: MyKeyboard
OC: DailyClack
Asia: zFrontier
CA: Ashkeebs

Pricing

Estimated lead time: 12 months after group buy

Kits

Renders

J-02 by Proto[Typist] Keyboards

Haus by Hand Engineering

Black Haus for the render.

GMMK PRO case. Model by Elmo, design by GPCGR.

Colors

Consider this image just a reference, as viewing the HEX on a screen is not accurate. I think these colors will work great, but I do have alternatives that are less/more saturated or a slightly different hue, in case the samples turn out a bit off and to make sure the subtle gradient is respected.

Deskmat

Collaborations

THOK x SA Espresso

RocketCables x SA Espresso

I want to thank everyone that supported the set during the IC. It was a pleasure to develop this idea with your help.
Special thanks to thatkoaladoe, shota_irl, NoPunIn10Did, Swishy and konstantin.

Will the Spacebars kit be using SP's new convex molds in those sizes?

No, it will be using non-convex R3 spaces

I'm super hyped for this set! It'll be my first ever GB.

At the risk of coming off as a complete newbie (because I am) - the TKL kit contains the alphas, right? I was trying to work it out but this is the first time I've seen a TKL set layout image without the alphas included.

No, Alphas is a separate kit.

Very beautiful set with an irresistible theme! Am I the only one who think this set will look better with SA cap's more vibrant colors on a smoother texture? have placed in my order. All the best for the GB!

Newbie question: are the two R3 rows (in the middle and on the bottom) in Specialties kit interchangeable? Will the 1.5u function key work on the bottom (space bar) row or will its profile be misaligned with the others?

They'll match. You can use that 1.5u Function key on either the home row or the bottom row and it'll look just fine. :thumb:

The smaller spacebars aren't convex, it seems SP recently added convex options for these sizes but I didn't get to kit/quote them with that in mind.

Don't quote me on this but I think that is when the vendors have faith in the set and the extras they purchase will push it over to reach MOQ. I think and I hope this is what will happen with this set too. Im a hopeless coffee addict haha

To add to this, a lot of people (like me!) wait till the last weeks of the keycaps GB before securing their orders.

You want Alpha and TKL at least.

As for the Meta and 2 blanks, if you want to keep the same key, then you want Specialty + Ortho. Otherwise, you can get the Novelty

Orders complete. Let’s gooo.
EDIT: real nervous about my artisan though

This is defo my favorite with these sorts of colors! I really like the artisan.

Ended up getting the Alphas, TKL, and Novelties. Now the wait begins.

<3

Such a great set & colorscheme!
I cannot wait for a year.  :D

I ordered also the Ortho/40s set.

There will be extras, with that considered Ortho/40s and THOK only need a tiny push so they should make it. Only Ergo is not clear yet.

Hey, are there any news on the sales?
I'm thinking about buying an extra kit just to make sure those beautilful colours match in the end, just in case Orthos stay behind. ^^

Does this mean I secured the set and will just be shipped after all GB's are shipped? Or not really secured and it's sort of a waitlist?

Hi everyone, here is the update on SA Espresso's samples.

To summarize the mod color RAL 8017 looks great, while the alphas will need adjustments to get the gradient as we want it.
As mentioned in the post I had selected alternatives for some of the Pantones. 7601 C, 7592 C and 471 C will be changed to a close alternative to adjust hue or saturation.

- 7601 C to 478 C
- 7587 C - Maintained
- 7592 C to 7586 C
- 471 C to 7566 C

Also I want to clarify that I got the samples a few months ago and already gave this feedback, I've just been slow to update you here due to personal stuff. I'll try to be faster in the future.
I was also told that comparing against plastic chips would be better, so the next round will be done like that.

Samples: https://imgur.com/a/ND0y0u5
Please note that these pictures aren't accurate, colors look different than in real life and also in some cases they make the sample look closer to the Pantone.

Cinder's estimated ship date based on GMK's current rate of fulfillment is mid 2025. It would be virtually impossible for it to ship within the next year.

The colors have been approved. Right now SA is two months behind schedule so I've been told the set will be finished during October.

Here are the samples. As always keep in mind that a picture is not very accurate.

Hey everyone, I'm doing a quick poll for the Spacebars Kit of SA Espresso.

Previously the smaller spacebars could only be concave, but now they can make them convex like the normal 6.25u so I'll let you decide what you prefer.

that bar decision kind of killed this for me, no idea who the hell purposefully wants concave bars... the only reason they are concave in the first place is a lack of molds. oh well.

This is honestly one of the stupidest kitting choices I've ever seen someone willfully make in this hobby. I hope you reconsider for the sake of your buyers, there is zero reason to utilize concave bars over convex bars. And doing so after your community expressed support for the change just shows that you don't actually care what they think.

And doing so after your community expressed support for the change just shows that you don't actually care what they think.

40% of my buyers didn't want convex, so there is a reason to keep them concave. Even if more people wanted to change to convex (myself included) I'm not gonna change a product after GB if almost half the buyers don't want that.
I have no idea how you can extrapolate from that that I don't care about what they think, but you do you.

Convex was and has always been simply a compromise to the SA profile as they did not have the molds. I've been buying SA since Nantucket Selectric and have always hated the bars.

Have you considered that:

* Your buyers are not guaranteed to check this thread (I am not sure that a geekhack-posted Google form properly represents the purchasing group for this set)
* Your buyers may not understand the difference between convex and concave
* Your buyers may not understand that this would have zero impact on the production times

This is a significant issue for SA keys. Concave bars are more akin to a modifier key. Convex keys are made to be spacebars. I would expect that most people would prefer convex.

I didn't get in on the GB (I don't trust color matching until I see samples) but also won't get extras due to this choice. Feel free to ignore me if it just irritates you, I am just expressing concern because this is a pretty significant go or no-go for purchasers like me.

You didn't poll your buyers, you polled via a publicly posted google form linked on Geekhack. Unless you emailed everybody that ordered the set, you did not poll your buyers.
You then ignored the majority of responders.
You're acting like it's a noble thing you're doing by not changing the advertised product but it's literally an upgrade with no drawbacks. Concave bars have never been a feature, they have always been a compromise borne of minibars being a recent development in the hobby, and for a long time it was easier to just use existing blanks for other keys, like shifts, rather than develop actual spacebar molds. I am willing to bet that the 40% of people voting against it is a mix of:

1) people who do not know or understand the difference between concave and convex spacebars
2) people who have an irrational fear that the change would increase production lead times
3) people who did not even buy the set voting for ****s and giggles

You, as the designer, are responsible for making informed decisions on behalf of your customers. Kitting feedback is good but ultimately it is on you to make the best choices given the information available. You made a choice that only stands to hurt customers because of some unproven notion that people really want concave bars. I only stress all these points because I do not want future set designers to use this as precedent and use concave bars thinking they're doing something right.

Yes I know that concave bars were a limitation, obviously if I was sarting a new SA GB today I would use the new molds. It's completely different to make kitting changes before or AFTER the GB. You're giving people something different than what they bought.

I did the poll for everyone that I could, which is geekhack and my discord. You're right that it would be ideal to poll every single customer but I can't do that, especially since I had limited time to gather customer feedback and make a decision or it would start hurting production times.

I can't read people minds, I'm not gonna assume what everyone wants, I'm gonna use the data that I could gather to make a decision and I'm going to prioritize not making kitting changes after GB unless a significant percentage wants it. If someone bough the set it means they are okay with concave bars or they don't even know the difference, so it's not that terrible to just give them the product they were gonna get from the start. There's several previous SA sets like this, it's fine.

In any case I don't know why you're so worked up, I'm not ignoring anyone, I'm not acting like I'm doing anything noble. Relax.

Hi folks. I made a small order last week for matching convex minibars with sizes 2u, 2.25u, 2.75u, and 3u represented. I can post back here when they've arrived.

Unbiased and hopefully helpful input on the disconnect to at least fill in some of the blanks.

I think maybe what is frustrating some folks is that, post-SA Mizu (I know it was marketed for SA Dualshot as well), the option for convex spacebars has been known - so there was a missed opportunity out front (some may have even assumed the bars would be convex based on this). Additionally, without stating what "significant" means in terms of a number of buyers voting for a certain option, it's really hard to understand why a healthy majority would not result in a modification being made, especially if you as a designer have polled for input and did not want to be making a decision unilaterally...

I understand the reluctance to make changes after money has been taken and the GB period is over but, to be frank, I don't think you should have polled for this option at all if you did not take additional steps to maximize the number of buyers participating, make a decision based explicitly on the results alone, or use designer discretion if you truly believe convex bars to be a better choice. In my experience, if you request feedback and make a decision that is counter to the feedback received, people are going to lose trust. This is a fair response in my opinion and, while nothing can be done now, maybe this perspective can help clear up the level of frustration in this thread.

That is fair and I appreciate the respectful criticism, it does make me think that I should have set the expectations better when I did the poll.

I will try to provide a better explanation of the situation and my mindset. SP contacted us offering to use the new molds for the spacebars kit but they only gave me a weekend to give an answer or it would delay production. I considered rejecting right away because I don't want to make changes post GB, but I thought I'd do a poll just in case somehow we get a good number of responses in such a short time. I would have made the change if we got 80%+ in favor of convex and good numbers but we didn't, so that's pretty much it.

It is true that I expected from the start that we would keep concave and I should have clarified that since I can see how it's dissaponting for the people that got hopeful about the change.

Spacebars should be convex. No reason to not take the option if available. IMO the poll was unnecessary.

I got a shipping notice today from Kono.

As this is SP SA-lay out all your caps when you get them. Historically I’ve had 1/12 kits have two of one key and none of another. Vendors have taken care of me (Thanks to Kono, drop, and novelkeys)

Got mine in a few hours ago! Nice to finally have this setup complete. Going to get an extra housing for the GMMK Pro and color it to match, though the black does look real nice. Another project will be the coffee bean or coffee cup dial I plan to model and 3d print in resin. Looks great, thanks for making this happen!

Because of the lighting its hard to tell what colors those caps have, I hope they are close to initial renders?

Wow. Count me among the buyers who honestly assumed the spacebars would be switched to convex since the molds were available. I honestly wouldn't have ordered the bars kit at all if I'd known.

My own fault (in part) but man...what a letdown. Here's hoping patcoll ordered enough for all of us.
