Realforce 87u 55g Review!
« on: Sat, 10 August 2013, 18:33:48 »

This is my review on the Realforce 87u with uniform 55g keys!

Before I ordered this keyboard I was very hesitant on getting one because of the high price point on a keyboard, especially one that is only available from buying online. I have never had a chance to try any topre switches before and the closest I had to it was cherry mx browns (next to that mx blues). This is going to great a small review on the keyboard about the pros and cons and whether or not you should buy one!

Pros
- The sound of these switches are amazing not loud like blues, not quiet likes reds. In between and still very satisfying
- The key weighting is not heavy. I was worried about getting the 55g switches because people say that they are heavy. I have only used this keyboard for a few days and haven't broken them in yet and the keys are not heavy and not too light either.
- The keyboard comes with a red escape key, 4 purple WASD key caps and extra control and caps lock keys for the dip switch setting.
- Dye-sublimation key caps. These key caps are not engraved so you wont feel them but they are not printed on either so they wont rub off.
- DIP switches. Great way to disable the windows keys and swap the control and caps lock
- Quality. This board looks and feels very sturdy, does not move on the desk, no creaking. Couldn't ask for anything better.
- Size. The TKL layout is perfect! I do not use the numpad (even if I did there is numlock on this board) but it is nice to have dedicated arrow keys, del, page up/down and function keys.

Cons
- If you are not a touch typist the black version is not for you, the keys are nearly impossible to see with the lights off. Instead get the white!
- ABS spacebar. I haven't seen very much shine on my spacebar but it would be nice if these boards included pbt spacebars as all the other keys on the keyboard are pbt.
- Price. If the price is hard to come around, keep saving! This keyboard is worth every penny and also has a very high resale value.

Overall
This is a fantastic board! I love the tactile feedback this keyboard gives, it is very hard to explain but it feels like you put the most force at the beginning of the key press and it gets lighter as you follow through. Unfortunately, I haven't tried 45g topre switches to compare but I am in love with the 55g switches this keyboard has right now. Truth is, I wrote this review just because I enjoy typing on this keyboard.

If you have any questions feel free to send me a PM and I will try and answer them. I am no ripster opening the keyboard up and doing a whole bunch of tests, lubing keyboards but I know basic stuff.

IMO, everybody should try the 55g Topre. It's the greatest switch ever made.

I agree with this review. I, admittedly, have only used blue MX switches, so I have no strong base for comparison. I am thoroughly enjoying my Topre Realforce 87U 55g board. It took me about a day to get used to it. Now when I go back to blue MX switches I feel like they're just cheap and insubstantial compared to the Topre. I do miss the audible click. The "thock" isn't as satisfying as the click sound to me for some reason.

The best comparison of Topre vs MX switch I can think of is:
Topre = weighted piano key
MX = non-weighted keyboard key

It's a significantly different feel.

Anyone whom is on the fence about trying a Topre board, I suggest you just take the plunge. You'll most likely fall in love like everyone else, but in the case you don't, you can easily offload it in the classifieds :)

They're both almost worlds apart. The HHKB feels and sounds different from the FC660C which uses the exact same setup, 45g uniform, but plate mounted. I think I still prefer the plate mounted switches over case for now just because that's what I've started on, but that's just me. I think any Topre board you pick up will be enjoyable. I gotta say though, I've fallen head over heels for my 87u Type S.

Type S means silenced? How does silenced feel vs non silenced? Does it feel any different? I like the tactile feel.. not sure. There's a realforce silent on ebay i might try to win

In terms of feel, it doesn't feel much different compared to the 103u I used to own. Though, compared to any uniform boards it feels a bit lighter. Sound wise is where they're completely different. Non-silenced boards are loud and chattery at high speeds, while the silent boards are quiet at any typing speed and utterly silent at slow speeds. I absolutely adore it.

On the other hand, some people say the Type S HHKB's are a bit more refined and feel better compared to the non silent ones. I can't vouch for that as I only have a non-silenced HHKB and it feels pretty darn good as well. Crisp is the word I'd use to describe it.

I really want to try a 55g topre board now

So now that I have one of these I do think I prefer the 55g vs the 45g.

The only thing I'm not crazy about is the embeded numberpad. I'd rather have a setup where you press the bottom row menu key or perhaps the left windows key and they would act like an 'fn' key for the embedded number pad. Maybe this possible and I'm too noob to realize it.

The more I read about this keyboard the more I know that I am doing right in the world by saving for it. I own the Leopold fc660c and I absolutely love it, but I wanted a more standard tenkeyless for home settings, and the 60% for when I go back to school. I believe I will love the 55g weighting, and from what everyone has told me when on this topic I cannot wait...may is too long of a wait but my wife's gaming pc is needed because the one she is using now is just plain outdated. Thanks for the review it was helpful in convincing me that this is the right choice. lol

Get the Realforce.  HHKB doesn't come in 55g as far as I know.  55g gives the best feel out of the Topre switches.  I started with the 55g, and ended up buying a 45g to try because I was so happy with 55g.  If I started with the 45g, I would have been disappointed, and would have joined the Topre hater club.  I still have the 45g, and it is a good keyboard, but not good enough to justify the cost.

Pro Tip: Put some cellophane tape on the space bar. Doesn't really affect the feel or the look that much, and prevents shine, which keeps the resale value high.

I still think the Realforce 104UG is the bomb  :thumb: .  Perfect for typing even though it is an all 45g layout (you noticed they never drop the price on this baby).  Besides if they decide to ever release a 55g version I'll be all over that like stink-piss.

I still think the Realforce 104UG is the bomb  :thumb: .  Perfect for typing even though it is an all 45g layout (you noticed they never drop the price on this baby).  Besides if they decide to ever release a 55g version I'll be all over that like stink-piss.

Not all 45g's suck in the world of Thorpe......

Type on a 55g and tell me that.  It feels okay, but compared to its 55g bigger brother it feels like poop.  I don't hate my 45g, otherwise I would have sold it already, I just don't like it in comparison to the 55g, if that makes any sense.  It's like the v6 vs v8 model in a muscle car, once you drive the v8 you'll hate the v6, but it's certainly better than walking or driving a four banger Hyundai.  Much like MX reds vs any other MX switch with a heavier weight.  Obviously, not everyone is the same, so you might not share that opinion.  I just feel like the lower weighted Topre switches are overrated, much like MX reds.  Of course they feel superb when compared to rubber domes, but there are better choices to be had.

For me, the 55-gram 87U is the best keyboard I've used in 4+ decades of owning/using computer keyboards.
It's replaced my SSK as my preferred keyboard.

I bought both and sold the 55g.  I do like my uniform 45g slightly better, but I can see how people like the 55g thock more.  It distinguishes itself more as a Topre switch.  Neither is perfect though.  I do wish they made a 49.75g switch.  :))

Get a HHKB :).  Feels slightly stiffer than RF 45g for whatever reason...Or buy an older Topre keyboard since the rubber supposedly gets stiffer?

It seems to be a general consensus that HHKB is in between 45g and 55g Realforce. Maybe it is a 49.75g switch? haha

So first off, I'd like to thank you for taking the time to write a review of the RF87u I'm currently in the process of deciding whether I want to buy one myself or not, so this helped a little bit.

Little disappointed though, there's an extreme lack of pictures, would of been nice to see a few fresh out of the box so to speak and furthermore, you don't really go into detail, I know the saying 'short but sweet' could be applicable here, but it would of been nice to see you expand on some of the areas a little more.

But regardless, thank you.

Hope you enjoy your lovely Topre.

This keyboard looks fantastic, and I am an owner of a 45g uniform weighted Leopold fc 660c keyboard. I am looking forward to receiving my Realforce 87u 55g, which I just ordered early yesterday afternoon and is being processed as I write this. I Hope it I end up loving this keyboard at least as much as I love my Leo, because then the purchase of this keyboard for 213, after shipping, would totally make this worth it.

I'm really considering putting down the money for a topre board. The silent variants are music to my ear.

I just received the 55g RF a day ago and I am only like 2 hours using it but I find that the mesmerizing THOCK sound of the HHKB is sorely missing in this keyboard except from the BACKSPACE key. Is this normal? I mean, to me, the beauty of Topre is the THOCK sound and this is not as prominent as the HHKB.

Yes, it's perfectly normal.  The HHKB thocks so hard because of it's case mounting.  The RF is plate mounted, which kills the sound.

A 'thockie' 55-gram 87U might be a nice addition Realforce's lineup--to mine too.

I got my RF 55g yesterday and it's definitely my favourite keyboard now. I was apprehensive about ordering it after reading the warnings on EK's site about the switches being stiff and the extra strength required to use them (although I don't have arthritis or a similar condition) but these feel great! The switches are smooth and not heavy at all. I also appreciate the fact that it's not as loud as the HHKB; I wouldn't be able to take the latter to work or somewhere crowded whereas the RF sounds fine even without any silencing mods.

Now I can safely confirm: Realforce 55g > HHKB > Leopold FC660C.

Two happy thumbs up.

If I can remember I'll weigh mine later, I don't remember it being light, the HHKB yes, the TKL RF not so much.

This keyboard is so good, be warned I find it very hard to type on my Leopold fc660c(which is an amazing keyboard for those of you have not tried it out yet). At first I hated the 55g RF, but after I would say a whopping 20 minutes I was already taking a liking to this beauty. I have had mine for about 5 days perhaps....and already I find it very hard to type on the Leo just because of the change in size and weighting, and the thing is I kind of prefer 60% keyboards and I thought it would be a bit weird going back to a standard tenkeyless...but it was easier than going back to the  60%. I will say the weight does take a bit to warm up to if you are or have become more comfortable with a 45g weighting, but it is worth the work because it feels amazing and sounds great too.

I received one of these in the mail today.

This keyboard is VERY difficult to type on; The keys have a lot of resistance to them. I practically have to hammer down on it. I suppose I'm just not used to a keyboard being this resistant when it comes to the keys; But I do feel like I would get fatigue after typing on this for an extended period of time.

Want to trade domes? I have a variable real force, and I'd be interested in trying a 55g one.

I appreciate the offer, but I don't think I'd like a variable very much.

I'm coming from a cheap, and I mean cheap rubber dome Logitech keyboard that I've been using for the past five years. In fact, I've been using rubber domes (standard, cheap rubber domes, nothing close to topre) for all my computing life, so this is a big change. Maybe I just need to adjust to it?

Hang on there FlareonTheFlase - Topre typically needs about a week to get used to. And then you will never want any other board. Seriously - even if you start with a lighter switch, eg a 45g Topre such as HHKB, after you are used to that, you want a 55g and when you got a 55g, it is just right. Because you moved from a cheapo rubber dome to a Master-race keyboard, this type of sudden escalation in 'luxury' takes time to get used to, you know :P

I finally sat down to read this review and I love the GIFs showing the spring and rubber dome in action. I'm surprise that the mechanism is so simple - the spring and rubber domes are just sitting on top of each other and not glued to the board. I'm not sure what I was expecting but definitely not something as simple as this. How does it know you have type a character? I guess that's the capacitive part - meaning the green PBC board itself is touch sensitive? And modding the silencing mod must be maddening if you have to juggle between all these moving domes.

One of the simplest forms of capacitors are two parallel plates. As the plates get closer the capacitance increases (C=εA/d). Although a spring isn't a plate I'm sure it has similar properties as it compresses. Without getting into anything too complicated (calculus and some physics equations) this change in capacitance will change other variables in the electronic system (such as the current). These changes can then be picked up by the microcontroller to register a key press.

I just got mine today and first impressions, it's really well built. Typing on this is heavenly. I think I won't touch a MX switch keyboard ever again :D (maybe MX clears). Although, I have to say, it does feel I have to extort a bit of pressure just to press the key (compared to MX blues/browns where I can just type all day with out any issues) and I do feel a bit fatigue typing on this for a few hours but I guess it takes time just to get use to it like any person being introduced into a new switch.

I say this is probably one of the best purchases I made in a while. Now if only I can find some colour keycaps for this :(

Just being the devil's advocate - how can this be the best purchase when your hand tire after long session? You wouldn't be productive as when you were on Browns, would you?

You are right. I would be more productive with browns but I simply love the feeling typing on this board now. I probably should have add that it's my first time typing on topre switches. Of course there's going to be some issues in the beginning but I think once I get pass over them, this would be a great board :)

No, don't sell your HHKB. Buy another RF 55g to extract the spring/domes and mod your HHKB to 55g. That is THE end game!

I got a 55g realforce in the mail today and initial impressions after typing on it are.....underwhelming to be honest. I expected it to be more orgasmic on the fingers after hearing so much about it. 55g feels lighter than I imagined. I've been using Cherry MX Blues for the past several months. A couple of Topre convert friends have told me to give it some time so that's what I'm going to do.

Yes, please use it for a few days, or a week if you can.

If, after that, you are still underwhelmed, then maybe Topre is not for you.

But many people warm to Topre so much that they cannot use anything else once they become accustomed to Topre.

I disagree about the conclusion that topre might not be for him after just trying the 55g.

55g, 45g and variable silence are all quite different. I haven't tried a FC600C yet but people said it sounds the best among topre. TKL only for me though.

The difference between variable and uniform is only relevant if you use the keyboard for something other than typing.

Typing only - variable is probably better.

Gaming (or non-touch-typing) only - uniform is probably better.

YMMV.

Also if someone doesn't like the feel of Topre, then it doesn't matter how heavy they are - they won't like them.

Conversely, someone might like the feel of typing on Topre, but feel that the keys are too heavy or too light.

From that perspective 45g would be best to start with as it is middle of the range.

But I read quite a few testimonies on here that they hate 45g but LOVE 55g.

Too lazy to dig those up. Would that be enough as counter argument?

I personally hate the 55g but love my v type-s and 45g. So that's another data point.

That's like saying if you hate MX-green then cherry MX is not for you...

Like I said I believe it all comes down to personal preferences.

Not argumentative at all - well, maybe a little bit :p

AFAIK one Topre switch feels just like any other, except for the force required to press it.  The force graph and behaviour are the same for all weight switches.

Cherry MX varies considerably more.  Blue and green and white have a tactile and audible click.

Brown, clear and tactile gray have slight tactile feedback, but no audible click.

Red, black and linear gray have no feedback at all.

If you don't like green, try black.  Or brown.  They are all quiet different in feel.

Just curious, have you tried 55g & variable type-s?

45g & 55g are similar to red vs black or brown vs clear (well 55g is slightly less heavier than black).

Although the switch type is the same, depending on whether you like to bottom out the key feel is quite different.

The removal of the thock and clack in the type-s makes it a lot different than the 45g & 55g.

V Type-s is more extreme than mx-red. Not quite as big of a difference between blue & red but it's a totally different beast.

I like to bottom out and 45g is the loudest (especially the clack) for me.

I have only tried 45g in my HHKB.

MX-wise I prefer blacks and greens.

I don't mind a bit of noise from keyboards, hence my liking for Model M (I have two).  But I need a quieter keyboard for late night and early morning sessions at home, which usually turns out to be my HHKB.

I also bottom out all the time (even on blacks and greens and Model M).

I like the feel of Topre switches, the oneness with cup rubber.

I suspect that 55g Topre will fele nice to me, as the HHKB always feels a bit light.

I prefer 55g as I also feel 45g is a little light but I do like heavier switches.

I believe that the reason I like 55g so much is because I started Topre on a HHKB, thus I was mesmerised by the thock and the switch. I used it daily for almost 3 months before I bought a 55g and by then, 55g feels just right. It clicked immediately. I would think that if one started their Topre experience on a 55g, it will be a shock and will find it hard to get used to, especially if you come from an even lighter MX board.

My first Topre experience was a HHKB Pro 2 also. I liked it very much and wanted another Topre board. I was torn between a 87u 45g and 55g, lots of users said the 45g RF felt softer or even mushy compared to the HHKB so I went with 55g and glad I did. The HHKB is about the lightest that would work for me. I thought about modding my HHKB with 55g domes but besides the cost and already having a RF 55g the HHKB's 45g is very good like it is and its nice to have some variety.

Yes I have been tempted but like I said having the RF 55g the HHKB 45g is a nice change sometimes. Especially for long typing sessions the HHKB is nice.

Yeah agree. I use the HHKB at work, so that's like a 8-10 hours of typing. It's pleasant and my fingers do not feel sore. I haven't tried typing so long on the 55g. I'll try that some day.

Well I took the advice and I have been using it as much as I can lately. I must say that since I jumped onto Topre from MX Blues, I'd forgotten what MX Browns (EWWWWW) felt like and thought they felt alot like those horrid switches. I've since had a unexpected chance to try those due to an impromptu trip to the girlfriend's place and oh my god, Topre feels NOTHING like MX Browns (EWWWW). The tactile feedback is so much better and its actually alot stiffer than my initial impressions before I had a chance to compare. I now realise my misconceptions about the Topre being similar to MX Browns (EEWWWWW) might have clouded my judgement.

On another note, I love the stealthy look of the low contrast between the legends and keycaps but they are hard to use for a non touch typist like me in low light conditions. This is actually a bigger issue than I initially expected it to be so just a heads up for all the others out there who aren't able to type without sneaking a glance at their boards once in a while.

Indeed 55g Topre would be notably stiffer than whatever browns and 45g blues are.  Especially with the different force curve.

I have a HHKB black on black keyboard and I typed pretty well. At times I thought I could even type without looking. Feeling extremely confidence, I bough the black white-grey caps and fitted the HHKB with that. While I could still type, I had a lot of stress because there were many times I made mistakes. The subtle stress made typing no fun and I realise I have a lot to learn. Swap it back to alphas and I am totally confident again. But blanks caps are so beautiful!

An interesting thought - back when PCCG sold RealForce keyboards they only had the variable weight versions.

There could be some truth to the rumour ...

I am curious, is there a RF 10th AE that is 55g? I saw it on sale from a guy in VN but it was really old. Did this come from EK as well? It seemed to be on sale in Leopold Korea website but that is a variable version, not 55g.

I went from MX Blues to Topre, and I immediately fell in love with it. I didn't need a few weeks to get used to it like for some people.

Having said that, I just replaced my Das with blues with a Filco Majestouch 2 with mx browns, and I absolutely love it!!! The typing experience is still better on Topre, that's why I have them at work. But for gaming, the browns feels so good on the Filco!

I'm using at this moment clears (at home) and RG variable  topre (at work) and is true, topre grows in you. Now I'm considering buying RF 55g...  I read lots of comments saying that 45g topre feel different on RF board than on HHKB or than on Leopold  fc660c.  Any one could said if that difference is that big?
I'm just looking for an snappier topre...  Is RF 55g the best option?
Thanks!

Yes 55g is a snappier topre switch, I far prefer it.

From the side printing it says 30g, 45g and 55g. So it's not uniform 55g. Very likely 10AE. Can they open the box to show the keyboard?

Indeed 55g Topre would be notably stiffer than whatever browns and 45g blues are.  Especially with the different force curve.

Are there an pictures of the Topre force curves? I have not seen them.

I am really curious why 45g browns feel too light for me but 45g topre feels fine. I now use a HHKB at home and clears at work and have no issue switching between the two. They both seem to have about the weight that I like :)

Are the Realforce keyboards programmable?  Or are you stuck with Qwerty?

There's one about 1/3 the way down this page: http://deskthority.net/keyboards-f2/why-not-t7889.html
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Thanks. Anyone know their Kanji and can tell the difference between the two 45g lines? It would also be cool to have one that also shows 55g.

It does do a good job at showing the smooth nature of the topre switch :)

Ohh, I am stupid. I thought they were just pointing to that vertical spot on the graph.
