Replacing SteelSeries 7G Keys
« on: Thu, 21 July 2011, 01:43:25 »
I was originally looking Black PBT Engraved set but found that that isnt compatible with my layout

my options are:

Black ABS Red Laser Etched
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=9938240429&

Or

Black PBT Engraved
http://item.taobao.com/item.htm?id=10082637185&
+ 2 Blank Keys

Which should i go with? I have also read alot about double shot keys...

I can make the regular layout work by easily enough with 2 blank keys for the backspace and backslash and have the regular backslash as a non working placeholder for the upper part of the enter

also i recently bought the firm pads from Elite keyboards and will put them in when i get the new keys. i am just looking to breathe some life into my old keyboard and use for gaming until i get used to my HHKB Pro2 which should hopefully be coming soon

The absolute best place you're going to find good information about ABS vs PBT, Laser vs Engraved, Doubleshots, etc...

All About Keys wiki

I know that sounds like I'm brushing off your question, but as I started to answer specifics, I realized that's better written and indexed for you. :)

My personal preference between those two would be PBT engraved.  (PBT = nicer IMO, and laser etched fades fast anyway)

I don't know much about the 7G layout.  Congrats on the HHKB Pro2!

And welcome to geekhack!

PS: We're currently running a group buy for RGB modifiers if you're interested!

i have read most of the stuff about keys here on the site i was just wondering what most people prefer here.

my initial choice was Black PBT Engraved because the wear should be very little.

i read that the SteelSeries key wear especially quickly because they dont have a coating on them which i can attest to. I actually warranted my first keyboard because the lettering was mostly worm on the left half of the keyboard after a month or 2. this one has held up for a while i now have mostly grey lettering and shiny keys.

Key Reference: SteelSeries 7G

both options are PBT keycaps. But I heard ppl complain that the red color faded after a few months of use.

There are also Black PBT Engraved keycaps that perfect fit on 7G.  有刻樱桃红 is red PBT, 黑同刻 is the Black PBT Engraved

thanks i wonder how he missed that set. i contacted him about this as i would really prefer that set (i hope he didnt order yet). the properly fitting enter key isnt the big thing for me it the backslash and backspace keys which if i dont get that set im going to need 2 blank keys which he cant get me. I was hoping someone here on the forums might have some

Good choice!

The picture in the key reference wiki sucks.

Can a Steelseries owner take one like this please?

idk if you would want a picture of my caps. especially the F as it is one of the most worn. though use my F12 so little it has dust would that work?

F would be better.  Almost all the other pics are of the F and other homerow keys (S and D usually).

Plus being worn it adds interest to the pic.

SGI with centered nubs.

ok ill do it once i get a keypuller (the F is still there but its completely shiny and you can see the key stem coming through)

Are the laser ones solid enough that they wont wear down? Im just really disappointed getting this great Keyboard only for the paint to wear off in less than 1-2 weeks!

well if its on black it will probably be using the same process and your original key so yes they are one of the most like to wear down quickly.
