Anyone else have a CM QuickFire Rapid without any labeling?
« Reply #351 on: Sun, 23 September 2012, 10:00:50 »
Working on top cover. Looking very promising. Do have a question for those interested. I can bring in grey and black which I will bring in both, but with majority grey case owners out there. Do need to hear if they would be sticking with grey.

Hey Carter - Do you have any more info on this? Count me in for one black if and when it ever happens :D

Thanks!

It's really hard to see in the pictures unless you get the flash to bounce off it. It's a bit better with SP keycaps, as they leave more of a gap.

The product photos you see online, the red plate practically glows: I believe these have been enhanced to highlight the difference.

Well it looks like my Left Alt switch died on me not even 1 month in. Very disappointing seeing as my cheapo membrane keyboard still works after 6 years. Any ideas on what would/could be wrong before I return it? Mx cherry reds by the way. Is this even normal for switches to be this delicate or is this defective.

It's vaguely worrisome that there are so many left alt switches dying.  Do the filco twins have the same problem?

I'm fairly certain I saw 5-8 similar in this thread.  I could be misremembering, though.

I remember one other left-alt switch problem for CMQFR Reds.

Ok so I just got my CM QuickFire Rapid with Reds about 20 minutes ago and I unbox it and it looks used.  I immediately see this scratch on my alt key and these feint like rubbing/wearing on the corners of a few of the keys but noticeable on the Esc and ctrl keys...  This is immediately out of the box mind you and my first thought was someone used a keycap tool on the Alt key...

I carry on and hook it up and start typing away and try to Alt+tab to another window... Nothing.. Left-Alt doesn't work at all.  Nothing.  Tab works, right alt works.  At this point I don't even care to find out what else doesn't work.  I purchased this keyboard about 8 hours before Carter announced his new 30% off keyboard sale.  So I paid full price on Amazon.  So now what? RMA? Return to Amazon? I'm going to get hit with return shipping on top of paying $27 more for this item.  Not impressed.

The broken and scratched Alt key
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/94566782/2012-09-13%2016.37.04.jpg

As mentioned the wearing on the Esc key:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/94566782/2012-09-13%2016.42.59.jpg

And here is the overall shot where the Alt key is still visable:
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/94566782/2012-09-13%2016.49.24.jpg

-028

Mine still works fine.
---
Edit: There is one other: on page 11 that I missed:
I received my QFR with MX Reds on Tuesday, the left ALT appears to be broken, not getting any response from it, unsure about other keys. I emailed the store that night but have yet to receive a response, probably backed up still from all the orders? Might call them tomorrow about it :/

Besides the defective key, everything else is really nice about the board (brandless too).

My QF Rapid with MX Browns came in today!

Lucky me, it's brandless, though it wouldn't have mattered either way because of the great discount Carter provided (big thanks!).

EDIT: I was so excited to get pictures of it that I didn't notice the unusual layout I have. What's up with that?

Wasn't there some mention earlier in the thread by carter saying the brown brandless he received were all spanish layout?  If they got their own stash of keyboards for this promo, it could be that they had a couple of them as well.

You must have gotten a board with Spanish layout by mistake. Contact CM's support, they'll arrange an exchange, shouldn't be a problem.

Well I was planning on swapping the key caps out sometime later anyways.

Would it not be viable/practical to remap it?

I think the number of keys is actually different between ISO (Spanish) and ANSI (US). For instance, on a US keyboard, you have 3 keys on the right of the P (you only have 2 on yours). And the Enter key is smaller on a US keyboard.

And I think your Z is not right next to the left shift, is it? (on a US layout, it is)

It depends on whether you can live with that. Personally, I'd exchange it.

From the way I look at it. The only layout in a keyboard that I don't like is when the Backspace key is shortened.

I rarely (if ever) use the |\ or Left-Shift keys.

I guess I could re-mail it, but how am I guaranteed to not get another Spanish layout?

Hey guys is it too late to cancel my order? It says "awaiting shipment" but there isn't a cancel button only a reorder button. I'm kinda fed up with the long waiting time to ship.

I would use the live support option on the website or give them a call to see what the hold up is and/or cancel the order.

Turns out they got my shipping address wrong and just shipped it right now. Wow I'm kinda sad, they said they have been calling me but I've been getting so many spam calls I don't pick up numbers I don't know. I know for sure I didn't get the address wrong (they did) but I'm happy it finally got shipped. I did ask him if he knew if it was a "brandless" board and he said he didn't know and that all boards are brand new in box. I can just hope my alt key isn't broken. Thanks for telling me about the live chat!

If you plan on replacing the keycaps, then you'd have a problem because your US-Enter key won't fit.

How are you guaranteed to not get another Spanish layout? Well, if you return a product because it was the wrong layout, then you'd think that the seller will pay special attention to not do the EXACT SAME MISTAKE again, so I'd say chances are pretty good for you to get the right one next time. :)
Good luck!

Well it's an ISO layout, correct? So something like this would work, yes?

Either way, I decided to RMA it anyways. Too much trouble to go through and remap every computer I want to use it with.

Ordered the quickfire rapid with blue mx keys with the discount (thanks Carter!) and explicitly stating I wanted the newer one. When I got it and opened the box I got an older one with all the logo's :(

A great keyboard but getting the old one was a bit of a disappointment.

A huge thanks to Carter, my 2 brandless cherry reds got to Canada via USPS tracked in perfect shape! Beautiful boards, o-rings going in now.
Even if they came in branded i would have still been happy with the great deal and free shipping, can't really beat that.

However it looks like one of them has the left alt key not working issue :*(
The other one works fine though.

Is there any way to fix the issue at all?

Many thanks again and for this tip-off thread!

I must have did something wrong then when I tried to order some from the CM store during the promo. I got an error message saying that the promo code could not be applied to my shipping address!! I ended up buying one locally at CC.

Well, I'm not sure how it will even work to be made available through CM, because it will also void the warranty (removing the current case top to replace it with another requires breaking the warranty seal on the bottom and partial disassembly).  Honestly, the branding is not that bad now that I have one.  My concern is more with the coating that is on the case.  It has a nice, rubbery texture, but I wonder how durable it will be.

Aftear 6+ months of use, mine is not showing wear. I'm pretty happy with the coating.

Some rubberized coating are bad, like the one on my mouse. Some are good, like the one on my awful cellphone. The CMstorm has a good coating as far as I can tell.

My brandless red switch's left alt just stopped working @16 days after purchase. In-store exchange expires at 15 days. What a coincidence     I pray they will be nice and exchange it at the store I bought it from, but after hearing about all these issues, I don't want to have to pay for shipping to RMA any future ones back to CM. *sigh*

*sigh* dammit. It's happening on this one too. However, I noticed that if I press on the key pretty hard it works especially on the left side? After a few hard presses it seems to work with lighter presses.. no idea why this is happening... anyone familiar with the circuitry in these babies?

This left-alt development is worrying, but I am happy to see that there are brandless ISO layout QFRs out in the wild!
