[IC] GMK ASCII - Available November 1st 2019 - GB LIVE
« on: Wed, 07 August 2019, 08:05:00 »
What?
A keyset inspired by Micro Switch's Halleffect Keyboard that I had the privilege of typing on when I visited the Kono/Input Club office last year. Featuring Cherry's vintage R012345 profile.

When?
November 2019

Where?
US: Kono.store
EU: MyKeyboard.eu
ASIA: zFrontier.com

Money?
TBD

Ships?
16-20 Weeks after GB closes

Colors?
Stock colors, 2M on 2B.

Kits?

Pics?

Comments?
I'm not exactly sure why Micro Switch's keyboard does not feature ASCII sublegends on all alphas, I did complete it using the standard ASCII table. Thanks to constexpr for the idea of putting the remaining commands on other alphas with a 64 character offset.

Nice.  This would probably look great with Modern Dolch mods.

R0 and R5 :D

Is this the first set with both in the base kit?

No, GMK Carbon R2 had full R0 to R5 profile.

Would you consider adding a windowed stepped caps lock? the windowed caps always makes a board seem more retro, so would fit well with the theme IMO.

This kit has 150 keys already. Just stepped windowed Shift Lock alone wouldn't make sense, I'd also have to add regular Shift Lock LED, Lock LED and Num Lock LED. So an additional 4 caps. Plus they'd be pad printed. Doubt I'll feel like adding those tbh.

Ah, oh well, no worries. Thanks for the fast reply! I also didn't know GMK's windowed caps were pad printed, more reason not to lol.

The transparent part of the key replaces the first shot that is usually the legend, and since GMK does not have triple shot tooling, all shots are used up by the time the window with the surrounding key is produced. Leaving only the option of adding the legend via pad printing then.

I like it! Good kit as well.

Any chance you could have a color comparison with for example Oblivion or Modern Dolch greys?

That would be a pretty funny set: GMK Unit, and just have the side-printed unit measurements.

When Zambumon posts a new interest check, do we start with NE cadet alphas? Or NE ASCII alphas? Or both at once?

Cool.

Has 2B been used on other sets?  I can't seem to recall if so.  Any idea how close it is to the custom color of gray used for Space Cadet?

Not that I can think of rn. I'll do some color chip photos in the coming days, though I suck with making color accurate pics sooooo

Please consider an R1 row kit as well as a different modifier (text+icon) kit for Backspace, Tab, Enter/Return, Shift

you can just put it next to other grays like honeywell mods, modern dolch alphas, and space cadet (if you have them).

I can only speculate, but ^H = Backspace, ^I = Tab (HT), ^J = Linefeed (LF), ^[ = Esc.
Seems like there are already dedicated keys for these so the Ctrl+Char is a bit redundant.

Nice looking set!  :D

Oh. Uh, could you add the few control code sublegends that are missing? I find that I use ^[ and ^@ more than most of the ones on alphas (other than ^C, ^D, ^Z). I don't think it'll detract from the aesthetics either; in fact, I kind of like it better with the complete set of control codes present.

(missing sublegends highlighted in yellow)

Also, I see you went with HT instead of TAB for tab. Good choice, that's one that most ASCII table sites get wrong.

Edit: Forgot to add DEL.

A few more things: +1 for using Return, +2 for 1.75u Function, and would you consider using Scroll↲Lock instead of Lock so it matches the rest of lock key legends and Page↲Up, Page↲Down?

I don't think it'll detract from the aesthetics either; in fact, I kind of like it better with the complete set of control codes present.

Show Image

(missing sublegends highlighted in yellow)

Also, I see you went with HT instead of TAB for tab. Good choice, that's one that most ASCII table sites get wrong.

Edit: Forgot to add DEL.

That's actually a pretty good idea to add the remaining sublegends with a 64 offset. I didn't want to add them as single keys like a novelty kit, I'll look into this approach instead!

A few more things: +1 for using Return, +2 for 1.75u Function, and would you consider using Scroll↲Lock instead of Lock so it matches the rest of lock key legends and Page↲Up, Page↲Down?

I really dislike the asymmetry of Scroll Lock when placed between Print and Pause (making those also two-liners is even worse). I'll have to say no for now, but I understand the request.

Usually I'd agree 100% (I prefer one-line legends on everything), but in this particular case it's a bit different since you have Page Up and Page Down as two-liners, and the set is going for a retro vibe, with the Shift Lock and everything. Would you at least consider using Scroll instead of Lock?

Extremely interesting set. My only (small) caveat would be the "Shift Lock" legend — all(*) other mods have "modern" legends, so going "back" only for the Caps Lock key strikes me as odd.

I look forward to seeing this in action.

(*) Yes, there's "Return" instead of "Enter" on both alpha-block Enter keys, but that one key has had this "dual identity" for ages, so it's not an issue. And yes, there's "Lock" instead of "Scroll Lock", but that's a different, modern defficiency (YMMV) in current sets.

Yeah, but... Pause/Break are two different commands (and Break is supposed to be front-printed, with what that entails), and "Print Screen" is a single legend (conveniently forgetting SysRq here).

Come to think of it, why are we still calling the Print Screen key, "Print Screen"? Although this WAS its original function, few people nowadays remember it, and it's been completely taken over by the screenshot/windowshot functionality. I wonder if a new legend like "Screen Capture" (or some shorter version) would be well received.

I'm not exactly sure why Micro Switch's keyboard does not feature ASCII sublegends on all alphas, I did complete it using the standard ASCII table

The sublegends on letter-keys (not all alphas) correspond to the ASCII codes that could be obtained with the Ctrl key: Ctrl-G produced an audible bell, etcetera. The few letter keys without a sublegend are those whose corresponding ASCII code already had a dedicated key and thus the Ctrl-_ combination was unnecessary to implement (namely: Ctrl-H: Backspace ⇒ Del Key; Ctrl-J: LF ⇒ LF key; Ctrl-M: CR ⇒ CR key; had a dedicated Tab key existed, the I keycap would have also lacked the ASCII "HT" sublegend).

The above said, I think your decision of adding the "missing" sublegends is for the best in this kit.

I really wish this was an SA set, those ASCII printed sub legends really remind me of the old school serial terminals I used in college, which all had SA style keys (at least in my memory)

That said, getting SA sets to production seems to be a bit challenging so totally understand the choice, and will likely join in.

Updated Kits, added Icon Modifier Kit, added Alice renders.

I am aiming for MOQ 500 on the Base Kit due to sublegend creation cost. It should roughly cost the same as GMK Crimson Cadet Base at 250 units then.

I'll ask out of abject, complete ignorance (and deal with the flack later).

Given that the bottom row is fully R5... do R5 molds for the split space bar keys already exist, or do those need to be created as well?

Indeed. Also applies for the long keys (6, 6.25, 7).

Bless up for icon mods though it'll cost me another $20-30 or so.

Oblivion and Cadet are both matched to Signature Plastic's GQM  ASCII is using GMK's stock color 2B.  The grey in ASCII is a lighter grey than those two sets.

Ergo is really hard to push to MOQ. I don't want to have vendors buy out MOQ and then have those kits sit in their warehouse forever (I still have 5 kits of GMK Calm Depths Assembly and MyKeyboard.eu still has some stock left as well). I'm staying away from odd layouts for GB's outside of Drop for the time being, sorry.

Does the lack of 6U spacebars for minimal inconvenience more people than the lack of Ortho kits proposed here?

Just need 1, 2u bar. 2, 1u bars would be nice, but not mandatory.

As for mods,

R2: Out
R3: Data or Read
R4: Shift and Enter

4, 1u keys.  That's it. If you're worried about base price, you can stick them in spacebar kit.

Edit: forgot this was r5 bottom. But you'd just need to add an up arrow to r5, so that's 5, 1u keys now. Still quite reasonable.

Can I asciii you a question?

Can you gib us an accent color?  Thanks  ^-^

I honestly just want some yellow or orange accents (esc and enter) with white or black legends.  I'm just being a selfish jerk.

With This being such a simple and clean Colorway set... I would bet a substantial amount of money that an ortho kit Like GMK Minimal's Would get to MOQ...or even be worth throwing into a child set.

Show Image

The Ortho Community has grown so much in the past year!

I would buy 30 Ortho Kits structured like this to assist in the cause.

Same, honestly. These caps are useful.

I’d buy if there was ortho. Prefer ergo but ortho support is minimum for me.

+4 for ortho.

Just need 1, 2u bar. 2, 1u bars would be nice, but not mandatory.

As for mods,

R2: Out
R3: Data or Read
R4: Shift and Enter

4, 1u keys.  That's it. If you're worried about base price, you can stick them in spacebar kit.

Edit: forgot this was r5 bottom. But you'd just need to add an up arrow to r5, so that's 5, 1u keys now. Still quite reasonable.

I'd also like a convex 1u spacebar.
Love the set. Definitely buying.

Another vote for ortho support here.  Just a few more keys in the base set and it would work.  I'm not sure if it was Oblotzky in the past who was concerned about ortho layouts using R0 and R5 due to most ortho keyboards not having a tilt.  Personally, I would love to have the opportunity to try out R0 and R5 on one of my ortho builds.

I'm assuming this set is gonna quite expensive isn't it? Like, Close to $200 on the Base?

I know Drop will buy a lot of extras but I don't think this has the following that Oblivion had.   Curious to see how all the new molds play out for pricing.

Text only is great! Thanks.

My last request, if I may, is for a 1u r3 Ctrl key. But if you're doing ambiguous legends then it doesn't matter.

I love the idea behind this set. I'm in for base + spacebars.

I think that a bunch of us just need to do a GB for some Ergodox blank modifiers. Something in a neutral color that will look decent with the alphas of a large variety of sets.

Accented keys wouldn't be hard to add from other keysets if you so desire. R2 Nautilus is dropping in spring 2020 if you need yellow bars.

Well there seems to have been a variant that did: https://deskthority.net/viewtopic.php?f=62&t=7594&start= and I think some artistic license can be taken with these keysets, such as adding a NUL sublegend to 2.

40bit is looking really good.

• I agree that R2 "Back" is unnecessary, you can just use the R2 "Delete" from the base kit… unless people are digging the aesthetic of it saying "Back". I personally like it, but I'd much rather see the key requested in the next bullet if it makes a difference.
• An additional 2u Space would be the one key I would really hope to see added, it's gaining in popularity. There are a handful of boards that use a double 2u Space and would save from having to buy the Spacebar kit for one key (like I had to for the GMK Calm Depths Assembly). Planck rev6 & EOTW, Preonic rev3, Boardwalk Ortho, Eco, Iris, Levinson, Nyquist, and a handful of other split boards.
• A R4 1.5u Shift would be great, if possible. UT47/Gnap! and others use this. There are no R4 1.5u keys in any of the kits unfortunately.

Definitely in on this. Thx.

another possibility for the “second” 2u space:  me and probably a few others will get the space bar kit for the 2.25 and 2.75u split space bars. Happy to sell the 2u that’s in there for cheap or add in cash for the colorful split bars that some 40’s sets get (for instance, the green split bars for GMK terra are only in the 40s set)

Thanks for your feedback. I'm keeping Back as I'm a fan of 'correct' legends, or as correct as they can be, and Delete deletes a character in front of the cursor so it does not feel appropriate to me. Submitted the new kit to GMK.

Stepped "Control" please? It'll be great with hhkb types.

Just out of curiosity... does a stepped vertical ("ISO") Enter key even exist in Cherry MX mount? In IBM Model M keyboards, ALL Caps Lock and vertical Enter keys are stepped, while in Cherry MX keycaps, both varieties of Caps Lock exist, but AFAIK, all vertical Enter keys are NON-stepped.

You did mention you are a fan of correct legends, so I'd kindly request having the correct icons on the numpad ("/" and "*"), since those are the characters that are displayed on screen when pressing those.

Yesn't. I used to agree with that, but I changed my mind. If you went by what keys display on the screen when you are in notepad and you press on them, then yes those should be * and /. However that would also qualify them as alphas, in which case on dual-tone sets like Oblivion or Space Cadet, those would need to be alpha colored, and we don't do that. They are not alphas, for example if you have calc.exe opened and you press those keys, they send an action to the program, which is behavior more in line with modifiers.

I also have both Return and Enter in my keysets now because one key is for when writing text and wanting to move to the beginning of next line (return carriage) while the other (on the numpad) enters an equation for processing, even though both do the same when you have notepad open.

Appreciate the answer, but I think it's wrong. The keycode that is sent is / and *. By your logic nothing is an alpha since it can be interpreted by software differently. For instance, pressing the [ key on my keyboard displays Š.

Even ignoring that, having / and * is more "old school" and in line with the theme of the set.

Woosh man, stop pressuring the designer with your agenda. He gave you his reasoning.

It's up now.

Oblotsky/Kono: A+ job on the pricing. Others have base kits at this price without new key design.

Did you hear negative tone with my comment? I was just replying with my opinion. That's better than not contributing to the discussion by being sour and seeing conflict everywhere.

On a more positive note, holy hell the pricing. How? With 35 new moulds... wow.
