Scarab is a 60% keyboard inspired by Ancient Egypt and co-designed by Mandzukic and savageastr0naut.
Ancient Egyptian Djed pillar design is incorporated into the sides of the case. Furthermore, the Egyptian Scarab Beetle, an integral part of Ancient Egyptian religion that is associated with the divine manifestation of the sun - Khepri, dawns the bottom of the Scarab in the form of a brass weight.

Yes, this project was at a standstill because we were waiting for the manufacturer. Unfortunately, they have bailed on this project without so much as a peep for the last few months. With that said, my co-designer and I are in talks with a few other manufacturers. Hopefully we can agree on the details and move to prototyping Scarab. It's a rather slow and dragging process, but Scarab is slowly progressing and my co-designer, Mandzukic, and I are working on it.

People have different preferences, tastes, and wants from a keyboard. There are those that prefer/indulge in tray mount keyboards, others enjoy the aesthetics and themes of boards.

Currently, Mandzukic and I are reviewing/testing the prototypes. Once we have finished our internal testing, we will either submit changes and have another round of prototyping or be good to go for GroupBuy. Regardless, follow this thread or join the Mechs & Co. Discord (https://discord.gg/mechsandco) (https://discord.gg/mechsandco)) and follow the #scarab channel for updates. Updates will be posted under the "Status" section in the OP here on GeekHack and pinned in the #scarab channel on the Discord. Once our testing of the R1 prototypes are done, we will be sending them to streamers to be built on stream. The timeline on this is currently unclear.
Initial thoughts,
- the design of the case is stunning in person and sits well on the desk
- brass weight is nice and flush, the sandblasted finish is great
- one of the internal standoffs may need to be modified, more testing is being done to confirm
- feet, my co-designer and I are deciding on what sort of feet to use

Mandz and I are now done with most of the testing for the Scarab prototype 1. However, the manufacturer made a mistake during the production of the prototype. The Scarab has 2 "posts" in the middle area of the case that require a custom design screw. Although we provided the file for the custom screw, the manufacturer unfortunately did not produce these screws for us and simply threaded the screw holes like the rest of the case. It's near impossible to screw down the PCB in those 2 areas without wanting to punch a hole in the wall, even with a magnetic screw/screw driver. Although it still works, it's not ideal.
Nonetheless, in light of this, Mandz and I have been discussing this with each other and are deciding if we want to move forward with this universal design or if we want to explore the possibility of an O-ring mount with perhaps a custom Scarab PCB/plate option instead. We're weighing both options and taking into consideration feedback, timeline, costs, manufacturing, logistics, etc.
We will keep you updated as decisions are made and things move forward.
