GROUP BUY: 1st February - 2nd March 2021
GROUP BUY THREAD (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=110967.0)

This is the set for all you sysadmins, IT professionals, Linux users, power users
and the people like me who had to learn to launch their games from DOS when
they were kids and grew up around computers ever since. Three mod options
and a choice of accent or non-accent colour keys means you can really make
this set your own.

As a creative professional I wanted to design a set that did more than just
custom colours and novelties. Using the freedom of dye sublimation I treated
the keycaps as a blank canvas and designed everything from scratch. I hope
you enjoy the result of what has been around 3 months of work so far.

TEASER TRAILER

Not a valid vimeo URL

Since I'm a motion graphics designer by trade, I wanted to be one of the first
to create an animated promo for a keyset. I hope you like it and you'll want
to turn on your audio for this one!

COLOUR

Dark greys with a hint towards steel blues have been chosen as the base colours.
353 C green has been carefully selected as the accent colour after initial
feedback pushed me away from a more turquoise hue, but I did not want
the green to become garish or oversaturated. 353 C seen in reality carries
a wonderful luminance with just the right amount of saturation and almost
glows off the coated swatch which helps to attempt to imitate the emissive
properties of monitors.

I have done my best to colour match my Pantone GP1601A swatches to
my display, which has been calibrated and profiled with an X-Rite
colorimeter. This matching has been done by eye to make the renders
as accurate as I can to what the swatches look like in reality. If you have
access to Pantone swatches, I recommend taking a look so you can see
the colours for yourself.

TYPOGRAPHY

Roboto mono in medium weight and all lower case has been chosen as the
typeface for the set. It's a monospace typeface that would look right at home
in your IDE or your terminal and is relatively modern, being commissioned
by Google in 2015.

The terminal legends have been carefully chosen to balance these three things:
Aesthetic - it must look nice.
Length - it must fit on as many keycaps as possible.
It must make sense in the context of a bash terminal bearing in mind that prompts are highly customisable.

inspired by terminal highlighting, but given a bit of design flare by rounding
the corners slightly. I found that while the hard edges were accurate, they
were not as aesthetically pleasing as the rounded corners and this will always
be the more important consideration.

SAMPLES
Keyreative and zFrontier have sent me some fantastic samples for superuser,
they have done an exceptional job at colour matching to the Pantone swatches!
I am very pleased with how these have come out, the legends are super sharp
and the colours completely carry my design intention. Once again please be
advised that if you do not have a capable, calibrated and profiled monitor that
you may not be looking at an accurate colour. 353C green is a bit more saturated
in reality and 4280C is not quite as black looking in reality.

Really fantastic presentation with this. The animations, the video, the renders are all well done with lots of polished details. This is a marketing teams wet dream. And the set is great too. Very cool and appealing colors. Out of the countless sets that have had a theme like this, cyberspace, coding, IDE themes, ect. I think this might be the most well done and polished and it features colors that I find personally very fitting and attractive. I will 99% be getting this. Again, great work.

Nice set. Like mods_highlight

A looooot of kits.

Numpad could be paired down to 1 with 4 extra keys.

FYI KAM is not the equivalent to KAT R2... KAM is a modified row 3 of KAT.

FYI KAM is not the equivalent to KAT R2... KAM is a modified row 3 of KAT.

KAT is numbered from the bottom, so it is R2.
KAM is not equivalent to KAT R2, but it's a modified version of it to be symmetrical, as you said.

Omg. The colors are excellent. Loving this.

In the 40% kit, it appears there is only one 1.75u spacebar. I recommend adding a second 1.75u spacebar or removing it entirely. Of the three layouts which use this size spacebar (JD40, JD45, Vortex Core), two of them use two 1.75u spacebars and one of them uses only one 1.75u spacebar.

Further, on the 40% kit, I recommend adding green accent enter keys. Esc and Enter accents are the most commonly requested accents for 40% kits.

I recommend cutting the page up and page down keys from the 40% kit as those are not common mods on any 40%.

Most 40% layouts which use 1u ctrl and 1u alt only need one of each, not two. These extras can likely safely be dropped.

The “menu” key can safely be dropped too. It’s just a 1.25u filler key and you already have other good choices for a generic 1.25u with “su” and “function.”

Lastly, I recommend dropping one set of arrow keys from the 40% kit. Most 40% don’t use arrows. And for the 40% layouts that do use arrow keys, one set is enough.

GL with IC! I absolutely will be picking this up.

I was so hyped on this set right up until I saw that 40s users dont get any choice in mod styles. I would buy multiple sets of this to be able to use terminal mods and highlight mods on different boards. Please consider adding additional 40s kits so that we don't miss out on some of the coolest aspects of this set.

I was disappointed when I saw 40s/ortho didn't have terminal mods. Will probably still get this, but terminal mods in 40s/ortho would be instacop.

Really nice job with this overall.

Really cool set, congrats. Now the things I think you should improve

I guess you made different kits because there are different mod kits but  because KAM is uniform, I suggest you to make a big base kit that cover most layouts. If I want to buy alphas+mods and then I need an ortho set, I'll end having keys duplicated like the arrows. I prefer to have extra keys that may I not use than duplicate keys to be honest. Maybe you could make a base kit with the "standar" mods design+alphas+some ortho keys and then add the spacebar to a separate kit and the ergo kit make it with alphas+mods. Biip made this with KAM Wraith and I think its really clever, you should check his kits

About the "-_" key I think you should change that. Right now they key is like _- but the _ its on the secondary layer, so right now looks like the _ its on the main layer and should be the other way. I suggest to change it to "-_"

On the ortho kit I dont know if there is a 1.5U spaceabrs but I suggest to add it, some ergo keyboards need it like the Corne. Also, the render looks like there is a 2U spacecbar but looks flat, I hope that key its convex and that its just you missed it on the render.
Also I notice on the ortho set there is a "sys" key but you dont have it in any other kit. May you should remove it, I dont see the point if we have the Su key

Love the colours and concept. I'm being selfish here, but if the ISO UK keys can form its own kit it would be so much more attractive to me

Nice idea!
Just an observation, isn't it better to split the international kit into north/french/south like other kat sets (I assume that the moq works the same way so the number of kits shouldn't be a problem), it could even be more optimized removing doubled keys because of the uniform profile.

This!!! My biggest complaint about Starry Night is that it only has F and J as homing. Would love the opption for HUNTA homing so I could change it to true Colemak.

Is this Keyreative?

Are they gonna fix their stabilized key mounting molds?
Are you referring to caps being off-kilter when mounted? Tbh, I don't use my Starry Nights much but the keeb sits on my desk and I can't unsee that some caps tilt no matter what I do.

The theme is totally for me.
In the renders the modifiers base color looks a little to blueish for my eyes though.

I will be adding a homing kit soon for those who had that concern :)

Also new signature! Although I don't know if it's considered rude to have an animated sig or not.

Rude or not, I'm down. That's a great signature.
I'm stoked for this kit and I'm glad to see your inclusion of more homing keys even though I don't have an interest in COLEMAK or other layouts.

This might just be my first KAM set so I am definitely looking forward to this.
I plan on building a board around this set despite having no experience with KAM, just because of how excellent this concept is.

I'm not going to put this in the main IC because people will misinterpret it, but here is a photograph of the actual Pantone chips.

Please take this with a mountain of salt, especially if your monitor is not calibrated and profiled with a colorimeter or spectrophotometer. This has been taken in RAW on a white coffee table with a bounce flash, white balanced in Lightroom to the Pantone paper and had a lens correction applied. This is only useful to see colours in relation to one another and some real world pine cones. It is to demonstrate that 4280C is darker than the RGB swatch, but it is not black. It also demonstrates the contrast between 4280C and 7545C.

Here is another shot with the flash adjusted to another position that provides more contrasty lighting. This better shows 7545C and 353C in terms of vibrance, but 4280C does not look like this in reality.

I love how this falls in the Cyberspace type of color scheme but with a more subtle tone :-)

Just an info for someone like me with no experience with KAT/KAM: how would a KAM profile compare to an XDA? I have the impression that KAM has a more concave printed area while still keeping a similar side shape to the XDA, but I'm not sure I'm getting it right.

They are quite different visually when put side to side..

Taking my KAT R2 keys (from KAT Alpha) and XDA keys (from various sets) together (disclaimer: i know KAM is symmetrical, while KAT R2 is not, but it's the closest thing, i am still waiting for KAM Wraith..), lets see the differences, calling KAT R2 "KAM" to keep things simple:
- KAM sits a tad higher, 1mm about so
- KAM sides are a lot more rounded, the shape is very different there, with XDA having a progressive bevel on the edge leading to the rounded corners from the top
- XDA keycap is indeed flatter, and they keycap surface is noticeably larger
- XDA surface corners are rounded, while KAM corners have notable square-ish shape
- the XDA sets i have (all PBT dye subs) have a rougher texture. Not as much as DSA but still on the rougher side of most profiles. KAM is either glossy ( = zero texture) or matte (i suppose like KAT, so kinda silky)
- something you only see if you remove the keycaps, is KAT / KAM is very thick (1.6mm or so) while XDA is thin (1.1mm or so). The difference in thickness will affect sound, and feeling.

There's another profile called XDAS (like "XDA Square") that might be a closer thing to KAM, with the difference of texture again (my XDAS sets are mid-rough i would say, smoother than XDA though). XDAS is thicker than XDA at 1.5mm, sits higher and has that square-ish top shape, but still has the same sphere radius as XDA so KAM will be more concave, also the corners are more straight leading to a larger key top surface.

Thanks! It was really helpful to get a better idea. From your description it seems like it is more efficient for typing compared to an XDA.

It's really a matter of taste, and habit.
The typing sound is itself a lot more refined, due to the thickness and shape of these keycaps, that's a fact. But otherwise "efficiency" is a very subjective matter. FWIW the key top of KAT / KAM is indeed smaller than XDA, so it needs a bit more precision.
Some people like very textured caps too, for the good grip and less "oily" feeling, some others prefer smoother texture. I know some people are really put off by SA for this reason (as it's shiny smooth).

Not sure how I feel about the profile given that it's uniform but wow the theme is so on point.  The presentation is also amazing and I would be surprised if you didn't convince people to buy the set with just that video alone.

I'm very tempted to hop on once it goes to group buy.  I just need to figure out if I'd be OK with that uniform profile.

International kits updated! Split the large international kit into 3:

Terminal ISO + UK
North
South

As well as fixed some key errors and filled in some missing keys. It's possible I'll still go back and amend the south kit to include keys from north that are required to avoid people having to purchase both. At the moment it is an extension.

From a merely Italian perspective (unless other languages have the same issue) I think in the South we would just need 3 more:

,;, .: and 6&

In order to make it fit with ISO+SOUTH only

Also e€ would be nice to have.

About this latter: I noticed that, where a character is under AltGr, you placed it in the lower left corner. Since the € is under AltGr aswell, would it make sense to place it there too, instead of using the standard position of the shift ruled characters? I'm going full finicky here and I know that this involves also the aesthetics. It does not bother me at all as it is now. It was just to share a quick thought.

Also noticed the raise of the apostrophe in the '? cap vs the previous international kit. It's perfect :-)

I'm not a fan of having shifted legends on the left and base legends on the right (| \). This is contrary to how we commonly represent legends horizontally, especially in text (\ |). This set is inspired by text, after all. Consider flipping the legends around.

A 1u = key should be added to the numpad.

1.75u function (popular Caps alternative) and 2u space should be added to mods (for Alice and other ergo boards), and 1.5u del should be removed (not common enough).

pgup, pgdn are not used on 40s/ortho and can be removed from the kit. The same goes for 3u spacebars. There appear to be two 2.25u spacebars in this kit; the second one is not commonly used and should be replaced with a second 2u spacebar (which is common on orthos).

Edit: added clarifications

One thing I noticed - did the capital Alphas option get removed? I could swear I'd seen a render of that when the IC first launched and I'm not seeing it anymore, which is hugely disappointing if so. Love me some centered Capital Alphas.

Nice catch on the legends, not something I would have noticed.

I agree about pgdn and pgup. I could swear it already includes 2x2u, but if what you say is true I agree with that too (I assume when you say “one” you mean one per color). Personally I like the 3u option, but it probably makes more sense in a separate kit.

One thing I would add is an enter key in bright green. I believe it’s more common for ortho to highlight esc/enter and space than the arrow keys.

Edit
Arsoth , he definitely decided against the drive letter alphas (A:/, B:/, etc), if that’s what you are thinking of, or we’re there standard uppercase that I’m forgetting? I didn’t like the drive letters, but standard caps could work. The lowercase reminds me of variables, which I like with the theme.

The numpad kit already covers this (sans 1u =, which I already mentioned should be added). You have to keep in mind that KAM is a uniform keycap profile — any key can be used on any row. Consequently, there is no need to include a second key. If you were referring to the 1u navigation keys, those are already covered by the mods kit, again because KAM is a uniform profile.

Edit: Something that could be worth considering is adding 1u esc, tab, bksp and func keys to the numpad kit (example (https://i.imgur.com/Kc6NaOo.jpg)). This would make the kit purchasable separately and usable for standalone numpads like this (https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61rFUq17JkL._AC_SL1500_.jpg) and this (https://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard_images/filco_keypad_large.jpg). Though I'd stick to just one mod style for these four keys, to keep the kit from becoming too large.

Would it be possible to complete it also with these two combinations?

[attachimg=1]

That would complete the Italian option without the need for the NorDe kit. And if I remember correctly that would work for Spanish layouts too.

Actually I guess these 2 could work also in the ISO kit, in order not to duplicate them for North and South: if I remember correctly ,; and .: are present in a lot of European layouts. I can at least recall: Italy, Germany, Spain, Netherlands (I think) and all 3 Scandinavian countries plus Finland.

Yes, but they are not used in US ISO and UK ISO, which that kit is intended for, so those users would be getting unnecessary keys. There are no downsides to having ,; and .: in both the North and South kits, so I would suggest just doing that.

Speaking of UK ISO, the 4$€ key is missing from the ISO kit.

You have to keep in mind that KAM is a uniform keycap profile — any key can be used on any row.

That explains it, that was my lack of understanding about the KAM keycap profile.  Thank you for explanation.

Re North and South: have you seen this (http://www.farah.cl/Keyboardery/Possible-International-Kits-for-Custom-Sets/#BRESLAPTIT)?

Thanks for the link. :)

Just don't know why it states that the 141 layout is "Older and obsolete" compared to the 142. Actually, I think I've never seen, in real life, a 142 layout with its @,#,[,], etc in R1. I would indeed edit the BRASLAPTIT using the 141 as a main reference.

But overall it is a remarkable reference tool.

Don't ask me, ask IBM! They updated the layout!

Actually, I think I've never seen, in real life, a 142 layout with its @,#,[,], etc in R1.

We have Microsoft to blame here. They never bothered to update their stuff and back when they unleashed the Windows keys upon an unsuspecting world, they forced OEMs to make keyboards according to THEIR (outdated) specs, with some horrendous side effects. Heck, besides the 141 layout still seeing any degree of usage (Curly braces on the quaternary layer? Really?), Microsoft is to blame, among many other sins, for the swapping of the vertical bar (|) and the broken bar (¦) in the Swiss layout(s).

One way or another, it doesn't matter — the New Italian layout is better than either 141 or 142.  ;D

I would indeed edit the BRASLAPTIT using the 141 as a main reference.

I wouldn't.

But overall it is a remarkable reference tool.

Thanks. And soon, it'll be even better.

dvorcol keeps an extensive tracking for homing keys:

TUNAH should cover all of them. E if you want to include BEPO. A is super-rare, but why not then. It's just that S and I do nothing for anyone.

The homing keys are super nice. this is the only set that has symmetric keycaps and extensive homing keys. There are not only english layouts. I use a german layout where i need a E and N homing key and the abililty to swap the keys between rows. this is the first set that features both. So its a must buy for me(also looks super sick). But i can imagin that there are other people having the same problem and maybe they need the homing S or so.

You want an E and N, I'm not going to argue against it. I'm asking about the S an I.

With that logic of "we don't know, but it might be out there" you could add the entire alphabet. If you don't know why a key is added, it's better not to add it.

There are other layouts to the list you posted earlier. S and I are required for some lesser known layouts like Eucalyn and THE-1.

The question should be are they too rare to consider supporting, and have I supported them correctly elsewhere in the kits, not whether they exist.

The S and I will stay for the time being.

I second this, in order to have a complete italian set you'd have to get both the North and South kits for how they are organized now. Imo putting the two keys in the ISO kit would be the most optimized solution.

Keeping a close eye on this IC, this set is going to be really cool  :thumb:

The easiest and most appropriate solution would be to just redo the kits based on the resources I linked above.

Here's another good reference:

Of course, keys that are already included in the iso_terminal_and_uk and alphas kits (such as the mods and <>, \|) — as well as keys that differ only in row but otherwise have the same legends — should be omitted.

Yep, the Monochrome could be a good starting point for compatibility on European layouts. Buying 2 full kits just for those 2 missing caps would be quite a shame.

I also write in Norwegian sometimes, so I could make some use of it if I decide to convert the layout, but I'm admittedly a rare case.

Needless to say, but just in case: the more I look a this set, the more I like it. It's really a nice balance between elegance and uniqueness. Thanks for creating it :-)

Am I completely lost or were there iso enter keys in the mods kits before? Or could they be tossed into the north kit as well? It's a bit of a chore having to get another kit where you only want the one key because I'm sensing the price of the UK iso kit is going to be more than paying slightly more for a north kit with the ISO enters.

Seconded - having ISO enters (and alt gr?) in each international kit is much more reasonable than expecting North/South buyers to also buy the UK kit just for the enter key.

My understanding is that the ISO kit has been separated from the other modifier sets for modularity.  The inclusion of the UK kit in the same one, while it is not required for all ISO users, makes the ISO kit a full one for UK users. Those of us that are not UK's may feel about buying those keys a burden. But we should consider that most Norde kits usually include UK keys. This ISO kit is unique due to the three different mods designs, and then, I think that the current solution is the more sensible one.

I don't understand - if all international kit buyers are expected to buy the ISO kit anyway, how is that more sensible than adding the modifiers to each international kit? While the amount of extra keys may be small, it's an extra kit and an extra level of complexity to anyone looking to buy. I don't think there's a very large amount of people who would buy the North or South kit without needing the ISO enter.

That would make sense IF the "ISO kit" were just the modifiers (ISO Enters, left Shifts and AltGrs) instead of the mods + the UK(+US) alphas. I think the only alpha in there useful for other national layouts would be the <>.

If the intent is to go with "full modularity", I would suggest making the "ISO kit" to be only the modifier keys, and get an "English" alphas kit (besides the extant North and South, which also would be alphas-only).

Notes: the 4$€ key in the North kit is for the English (UK) layout only; should be moved to "English". North and South lack <>. In South, the ◌́◌̈{ has the curly brace mis-sized.

Weeeeeeeeeeeell... we could dispense with the ISO Enter key by going ISANSI and replacing the 1.0 movable key (Ç in the Spanish layout) with a 1.5U equivalent. So buh-bye ISO Enter, hellay one special key per supported national layout... this would actually be worse for kitting (and that's without actually considering if the change is good — some national layouts designed for ISO become quite uncomfortable as ISANSI).

Yeah lets get back to realistic kits shall we, the ISO enter shape is what we are used to, it's a good part of why we find ANSI uncomfortable.

I'm guessing 99% of everyone getting the north kit needs an iso enter. it doesn't make sense to have to purchase a kit for surely >€30 to get ONE key that's part of the ISO-nordic keyset anyway.

Basically, there is very very very few people that want the north kit without ISO enter. I'm going to guess it's close to zero. It doesn't make sense not to include the iso enter there, or just in the mods kit from the start.

My understanding is that the ISO kit has been separated from the other modifier sets for modularity.  The inclusion of the UK kit in the same one, while it is not required for all ISO users, makes the ISO kit a full one for UK users. The inclusion of iso enter in the north kit also makes it a complete kit for north users.

Just include is enter in BOTH the uk and the north kit. The amount of people that want the north kit and not iso enters is so incredibly small that it's not worth to take into account.

Edit2: or what makes the absolute most sense to me, include iso enter in the modifiers kit. That way you only need to add the color scheme of that particular mods kit rather than all three. Which is how it was before if I'm not mistaken? I think going away from that is a mistake.

Actually, as a potential ISO+South buyer, I would not find it anything wrong in this approach if the price sit is reasonable.

Guess it’s the key factor: in order to state if it makes sense or not we should know the prices, otherwise any statement is quite inconsistent.

If, say, I have to pay X for the ISO and 1.1X for the South (or North), then yes, I would fell like I’m actually financing the feasibility for English ISO only users.

But if the price ratio is about reasonable then paying, say, X+3,5X (for ISO+South) or paying 4,5X (South with included ISO) is just the same for me.

Yes, that's a fair point. If there's no price difference between getting alphas, mods, north and UK ISO or getting just alphas, mods and north then obiously it doesn't make a difference. I'm just assuming this means buying an additional kit for the price of what a kit usually costs on top of everything else. Which obviously can be a completely incorrect assumption from my part. If it doesn't make a difference on pricing then I obviously couldn't care less where exactly the keys are :)

I agree that splitting the UK keys from the ISO modifiers makes sense for buyers getting the North and South kits. But, the OP decided to mix them, maybe considering that the UK set includes few keys. After reading the comments on it, I should agree with most that make three international sets: UK, North, and South, plus the ISO modifiers kit are fair for all.

And than i extented it, that i can imagin that there might be cases for the s and i, which OP confirmed. It just made me angry that people think there is only the english layouts and disregard all else. sorry i had to vent there for a bit.

If you really wanted to reply to my post I don't get it

Guys, just to be clear, there are essentially no drawbacks to having ISO Enter and AltGr keys in each of the international kits: US/UK ISO, North and South. So let's do that.

That's fair feedback guys I'll look to making the north and south complete in their own right :)
Yep, that's good.

Anyway, what are your thoughts on flipping the legends around (\ | instead of | \) like I suggested here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=108326.msg2954435#msg2954435)? Would be cool to hear what you think about the other suggestions as well :)

Currently in progress ;) alphas are done so I think it's just the int kits left which need a whole load of alignment and sizing changes anyways so they stop being so messy.

I mean I kinda feel like it doesn't matter which way round the legends go because for every keyboard you find with them on the right, you can find another with shift legends on the left. In fact both of my main boards' stock caps had them on the left which is probably the reason it made sense for me to do so as well (and they're rather popular boards). But it seems as though more people dislike them on the left than mind if it's on the right, so I concede ;)

Usually KAT sets have a separate kit for French layouts (ISO-FR, ISO-BE), but this one doesn't, at least not at the moment. Perhaps the runner will consider adding it if enough people ask for it :)

On that note, French kits are usually more popular than South kits.

It's possible to offer an ISO-DE Kit?
Currently you would have to purchase the iso and nord kit which contain keycaps that are not needed

It is improbable that an ISO-DE set would reach MoQ to be made; besides, it shares keys with other European keyboard layouts. Therefore the solution is to join as many "minority" layouts as possible in comprehensive kits that have a better chance to get enough demand to be made. I hope that explains the logic behind why you "have" to buy keys that you do not need.

That's not how KAT/KAM MOQs work though. There's one MOQ for number of key units in the entire buy, not on a per-kit basis.

Thank you for the heads up. Does it mean that any key can be ordered at a flat price after lot MoQ? If that is true any combination of keys is acceptable for the design. What is the lot MoQ?

MOQ for Keyreative works for units in a kit, the problem here is not the keys in a kit, its the number of kits which if really high become a problem for vendors because they now have to handle a lot more skus, so you need to have a balance between number of kits and keys in each kit to be able to have as much compat as possible, thats why most sets do a French/South/North kit for foreign layouts.

OK, So rationality of kits applies to KAM, as it does to GMK and other vendors, but for different reasons.

This has always confused me about KAT/KAM. It makes sense that the manufacturer would have the same constraints, but without individual MOQ per kit, how does the designer know when its too many kits?

KAT Monochrome which is currently running has ~55 kits. Seems you can go pretty wild, as long as vendors are willing to handle it...

Good job. I admire the colors and the creative console/dev env design.

Just a question: Would be more comfortable to handle, for you, for the manufacturer, and for vendors, to have modular sets with no redundant keys? I feel that having the same key in more than one group would be very confusing to all the stages of manufacturing and distribution. It looks like an MRP problem ahead.

It’s almost as if someone took GMK terminal, changed the colors to GMK Hammerhead and released it in a non GMK profile. I’m all about it. I’m also all about the memories of Windows 3.1. Oddly enough to open my favorite game which was on the B: drive (the actually floppy big floppy disks) I had to go out of windows 3.1 into DOS and yes launch the game from command line. The only two games I remember are one called Jones: Life in the fast lane and some other about old story books. I remember a humpty dumpty scene from the game.

Thanks for the update and for the new ISO kit!

I have only one issue which is the [~/] prefix in the mod_terminal kit legends. It looks nice (but imho a little bit crowded with the repetition) on a standard bottom row:

[~/]>ctrl_   [~/]>su_   [~/]>alt_

But it looks a bit weird on Tsangan bottom row:

[~/]>ctrl_   >su_   [~/]>alt_

1.5u wide Ctrl and Alt have the new prefix, but the 1u Code doesn't.

I've done my best to match the renders to my physical Pantone swatches, and my display is calibrated and profiled with an X-Rite colorimeter. I've also photographed the Pantone swatches on page 2. So that's really the best that I can do for now and once the samples come through I will be photographing those as well :)

The referred kit covers languages not addressed by KAM SU, like Spanish. There may be others but SP is the one that I can spot at first sight. I had the same question as the OP.

I'm sure you did, didn't wanna put that into question at all :) but as someone pointed out in the thread, apparently ISO-FR and ISO-DE are different from INTL north or south. What I basically miss is the Apple ISO-FR layout :

Now I'm sure some stuff here is too specific to Apple, but I think R1 and R4 are pretty standard ISO-FR.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this come up yet, but as you are using a mono space font, would not a mono legends kit (numbers and symbols and special characters) be perfect for it? On an ortholinear or staggered columnar board every legend would be aligned perfectly, just like you'd expect with a mono space font. I don't see any ortho renders, and the effect is not as noticable on a row staggered keyboard. That's the one thing stopping me from being in on this set.

Edit: A few keys appear to be missing, though, e.g. |°¬, ´¨, -_, '?/.

I know that situation as a French mac user... It sucks. And AZERTY sucks so much too. Just thinking about the fact that you have to use shift key to get numbers is so dumb.

The solution I found for myself is going standard. I can't say I tested all layouts but I had to use a Norwegian QWERTY some years ago and it made me realise that AZERTY is the worst!
Check this link (https://www.languedoc121tech.fr/french-accented-characters-qwerty/) if you're interested in how to do French accents on a QWERTY keyboard (link in English) using ASCII codes. There is also this link (https://princessjumper.wordpress.com/2013/08/24/2/) that can be helpful (link in French).

Please no. Mono legend does not make sense for AltGr symbols. All international keys are downgraded grotesque.

I'm probably in the extreme minority, but is there a chance to add an ortho 60% kit with blank keycaps in the Pantone 4280 C color?

I would be in too. I would love to have this set for my preonic, but only if it would be possible to have all keys in one color, since the mod - alphas separation looks kind of weird on my layout.

Edit: A few keys appear to be missing, though, e.g. |°¬, ´¨, -_, '?/.
FreshFromTheGrave, I suggest cross-referencing the South kit with this (http://www.farah.cl/Keyboardery/Possible-International-Kits-for-Custom-Sets/#BRESLAPTIT) if you haven't already.

Thanks K! I have been using that resource but I actually decided to trim the language support a little. So my South kit is supporting Italian, Spanish and Portuguese but not LatAm Spanish or Brazilian Portuguese. Similar thing for North where I decided not to include Icelandic just so I didn't balloon the kits too much (I think they're already quite large!).

All good. I wouldn't want it to screw up any of the usefulness of the international keys. Only if it could be done well.

As an English speaker, I was thinking more selfishly. I also use a very customized layout, s I don't have <> on my shifted ,. keys. My little selfish reason for mono legends.

This set is very nice! If I may provide a suggestion and it's not too late to make changes, I would very much like to see a 1.75u escape keycap to put instead of the capslock. This is considering you already have provided keycaps for vim-like hjkl controls, so being able to have a matching cap for an escape remap would be absolutely amazing!

While I do not use the caps lock key - instead, I use the control key - I do not see people who need it very happy to have it replaced by an ESC cap; that is, the first time I heard should replace the caps lock.

I wouldn't want to get rid of the caps lock keycap from the set, I just wanted to see the addition of a similar 1.75u escape. From what I've see , remapping the caps lock key to escape seems like a fairly common practice for users of a unix-based OS. For myself, I find capslock hardly ever used.

By fairly common, you mean 1 in how many? If my own anecdotal experience of some years at GH and 7k post is worth something, you are the first to mention it.

Not with respect to the 1.75u caps lock key specifically, but almost all ortho sets replace the caps lock key with a 1u ESC key (and TAB) because the ESC key in the caps lock position is the default mapping for the planck and preonic.

I was indeed hesitant to use the word common, as it's far from the majority doing so and I also might have oversold i by implying the general unix user, as I suppose it more strictly applies to users of Vim. But I still believe in that regards, remapping the escape to another key is not uncommon. Doesn't have to be caps, I've also heard mentioned control, tab, jj (double tap on j) etc. I just prefer the caps key, hence my original suggestion.

It just feels like the sets need to be a bit modified IMO. The alphas could get the accent spacebars and arrows with its choice of legend.

Because if I want to make an ISO TKL I believe I need to buy 4 sets (alphas, mods highligh, int-south & spacebar). I feel that it's going to be way above budget...

Let's see when the prices come out

Samples are IN everyone and they look fantastic!

Keyreative have done an exceptional job at colour matching to the Pantone swatches! I am very pleased with how these have come out, the legends are super sharp and the colours completely carry my design intention. Once again please be advised that if you do not have a capable, calibrated and profiled monitor that you may not be looking at an accurate colour. 353C green is a bit more saturated in reality and 4280C is not quite as black looking in reality.

All renders updated to include the most up to date legends and to the best of my ability have been colour corrected to match the samples (but do refer to the samples photos for a better representation).

More in depth video of the samples will be done soon so you can see the colours under changing light and get an even better idea of how they look :)

Kinda missing it for a pop of colour in iso layouts :/

not sure if anyone asked about this yet, but does it glow in the dark? if not, are they doubleshot? I'm really digging the colorway and wonder if it will look good on a silver or black kb   :thumb:

Glow in the dark wasn't mentioned, and KAM is dye-sub PBT not doubleshot.

Regarding KAM profile keycaps, are they all produced by a single company?

Asking because KAM Wraith, which ran back in January, haven't even gone into production yet (does anyone know if I even went thru color matching)- NK don't have much info on their update page.

Does that mean all KAM GB sets are behind that que?

Yes. KAM and KAT are made by one company, keyreative. KAM Wraith is now in production (according to a discord message posted by biip like yesterday) and should be “rolling out around Christmas-New Year”

Just to add to the above post - Superuser has already gone through colour matching (Wraith was the same - samples were ready by the GB) with the samples and they've already hit the colours perfectly :)

Should the ISO Enter and AltGr keys be in a separated kit? I know they were with the UK kit; but, they can be in their own module.

This has previously been discussed in the thread, starting somewhere around here (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=108326.msg2956951#msg2956951) :) Iirc, the consensus in the end was that, since there are no drawbacks to including ISO Enter and AltGr keys in each of the int'l kits (and, in fact, there are some benefits, as Eski outlined right below the post I linked), each of the kits might as well each have their ISO Enter and AltGr keys.

I'm certain that there isn't a significant number of users that would buy more than one of the three int'l kits, so the chance for duplicate keys is pretty low. On the other hand, having the kits independent from each other may simplify the purchasing process for a lot of users.

Thank you for the information. I revisited the OP and the replicated AltGr and Enter keys seemed redundant. If I join the group, I would be one of the few that may need more than one international kíts, and getting double of triple sets of modifiers do not make sense. But, I understand the reasoning.

The community needs to band together and speak with their wallets regarding future KAT/KAM sets. Nothing will change as long as MOQ keeps getting hit. One day MOQ will not get hit though and the hard work a designer has put into a KAT/KAM set will be all for nothing and it will not be the designers fault, other than choosing KAT/KAM as their platform. Hate to see a good idea wasted is all. Nice set. good luck.

I'm sure this set will hit MOQ because of flashy advertisement. Even if it will take 18 months to deliver.

Are you affiliated with keyreative?

KAT/KAM is absurdly behind schedule but yet people are still pumping out ICs...why? I honestly can not figure out why a designer would want to put their name behind a set that they will recieve backlash from the participants of. The gb is going to already be behind schedule before it even closes. Unless of course some designers are affiliated with keyreative, then it all makes sense.

Because maybe they like the way KAT/KAM feels? Because the kitting approach is frigging awesome and designers aren’t hamstrung into supporting only TKLs because that’s the only thing that’ll sell 250 units?

When GMK Thinkpad canceled the full ortho kit, one week into the GB, I was furious. Not because it was canceled, but because Voodoo looked at the numbers and decided “yeah, this isn’t going to work” and I couldn’t blame them for it.  The ortho kit was a brilliant offering, that a lot of folks, myself included, provided input on. I felt like it was a true IC that the community built and it got canned because of GMK’s MOQ approach.

KAT was a much needed alternative. The popularity is a testament to that. But a lot of things contributed to their backup - the popularity, COVID, growing pains with a new profile; it’s kinda hard to fault anyone for backlogs in 2020.

Unless of course some designers are affiliated with keyreative, then it all makes sense.

This is just asinine. Is this really what you think? Shilling is the only explanation?

So I guess this is just the state of the hobby now. We're just that desperate that we have to support bad business practices? No wonder everything is delayed, there are no repercussions.

Designers are pushing sets for a profile that is currently 18 months lead time without mentioning that anywhere in the IC/GB. Designers are also devoting a significant amount of time to marketing the sets. KAT Cyperspace was the same way. I don't know what is worse, an admittedly self-made conspiracy theory that the manufacturer is funding the marketing for sets like this, or that the community is doing it to itself. So much greed.

I think it's perfectly valid to question how wise it is to continue running KAT and KAM sets at this relatively high rate while Keyreative are struggling with QC and communication.

However, accusing designers of ulterior motives will immediately put people on the defensive, and discredits your argument.

Well, all I'm going to do is give my reasons for choosing KAM:

They are one of the few manufacturers who can actually produce this design. GMK can't do it, SP can't do it, ePBT can't do it yet, Drop/MT3 can't do it as far as I can tell, maybe Infinikey can do it and that's about it? The design is the leading factor in choosing a manufacturer and not something I would have considered compromising on, otherwise there's no point in doing it at all.

I wanted a uniform profile for this set for it's ease of kitting, flexibility for those with less common layouts and the aesthetic which to me fits the theme.

The MOQ system and pricing from Keyreative is attractive and ensures no kits get canned and everyone gets what they order.

Communication for me has been good enough, I've received my samples which were produced exactly per my requirements and were colour matched perfectly 1st time round. I'm just awaiting quotes now. So sure there probably are issues with lead times and comms but it was the best choice for this particular set, and I stand by it.

What are you on about? There’s a global pandemic that’s mucking up entire economies and you want what? Keyboard fanatics to say “hold up! I refuse to accommodate this! I shall withhold my support, financial or otherwise, unless keycap companies overcome supply chain difficulties that others can’t!”

It seems like you’re saying the community needs perspective, but it’s not the community that needs to rethink its expectations here.

I’m genuinely curious what is driving this clearly personal beef with keyreative.

Enjoy your 18 month wait. Enjoy the back lash from all the ill informed new-comers that buy this kit as their first set. Enjoy telling the people that wait 18 months for the kit that they will have to wait longer because the manufacturer did not do proper QC and that is why they are missing a key.

Of all the things you’ve complained about, this is the only one that seems legit. Yes, Keyreative had some QC issues. As far as I know, it was only with two sets. That’s not excusing them, and it’s entirely fair to be cautious for that reason. But your gripes seem to go well beyond QC (e.g., delays) and are all equally applicable to other manufacturers, you’re just singling them out for some reason.

If I'm not mistaken, you'd just need the alphas kit and one of the 40s ortho kits. That's a very common way to cover ortho boards.

While KAT/KAM would allow for even more specialised kits with less overhead for specific boards, the combinatorial complexity would eventually become unmanageable for the manufacturer and the vendors. I'd rather get a few keys too many (that would allow me to put the kit on a different board as well) than have vendors pass on the GB because of the logistical nightmare.

So what exactly are you asking for? Separate the 40s/ortho kit into two separate kits, one for 40s and one for ortho? You should put your request into actionable terms.

It would be nice if the kits were split a little bit more like you say or something like the set below, but I'm not going to ask for the unreasonable if there is little, to no demand or if it's just not cost effective.

I'll be happy to join this GB regardless of the wait time (after 2020, 2021 is going to be so awesome that 2022 will be here before we know it  :p).  Regardless of Keyreatives current backlog, KAM is the right and best choice for this set.

Sometimes I wonder if the people who make KAT and KAM regret offering designers unlimited kits so long as the total keys sold breaks X number of keys lol. People have more kits than they have keys sometimes.

Dumb question, but having never owned or used an 'ergo' keyboard I have to ask.  I know that KAM is non-sculpted and caps can be moved from row to row as desired for a given size (I'm typing on a KAM set now).  Is there any reason that the caps in the 'Ergo Blanks' kit wouldn't be usable as standard blanks in a non-ergo layout?  And is there any difference (e.g. stem placement) between the horizontal and vertical 1.5U caps?

They should just be standard keys, no difference between the horizontal and vertical :) The main reason for the blanks (apart from those who just like blanks) is to give some support for Redox boards and the like.

I assume there is going to be MOQ for each kit? What happens when a mod kit doesn't meet MOQ? I'm stuck with a set of alpha?

I've just found out how KAM MOQ works. It's odd, but that answered my concern.

I don't know if there is still time for this, but can we get ESC key(s) size of a Capslock (1.75u)? This is a terminal set after all and It's quite common that people using vim/emacs map their capslock to ESC. I've been doing it for last couple years and especially on 65% keyboard. The only other 1.75u keys are 'control' from mods and 'kill' and 'mount' from novelties. I'll take the set anyway, just having nice green 1.75u ESC would be better.

Post by: HolyJamaLama on Mon, 04 January 2021, 09:28:24

That depends on demographic of people you talk to. In dev community, pretty much everyone who uses vim/emacs extensively has remapped Capslock to ESC. You just can't use vim and default ESC without causing strain over the time ;D It's just way too far away.

But as I see that this has already been suggested in October (sorry, only now I went through most of the thread), I have very small hopes that this would include green 1.75 ESC. Control it is then.

Agree, it's hard for non-vim users to imagine the amount of Esc usage, I wouldn't hesitate to say it's common at least within the specific demographic

And TYPE YOUR CAPS HOLDING DOWN SHIFT LIKE A MAN!

Just added ;)

I've worked together with RAMA, sending in my KAM samples to help them create the very first KAM profile RAMA cap! This new profile will be available to other designers wanting to work with RAMA in KAM going forward too.

The superuser RAMA cap will be matched to 7545 C (mods grey) and will have glow in the dark green enamel infill!

From what I've been told, no, we will be going ahead as planned unless it's announced otherwise :) It could also be beneficial in that by the time production rolls around for superuser, Keyreative will be using their brand new dye-sub machinery and avoid any of the problems they've been having in the past.

How long does it take a GB's set to be manufactured? I have read about a year, but not sure if it was just a rummor.

It is currently around that time yeah. Keyreative have some new machinery that they're currently setting up and introducing double shot KAT to try and split the production queues so hopefully things will improve going forward, but they have some catching up to do at the moment.

40s_ortho kits have been given a minor adjustment! 1.5u spaces have been swapped for concave keys as it turns out these moulds are not available.

How is matte achieved?
I hope its not that rubberized layer which looks great on promo photos only but in a real life usage gets sticky and nasty over time?

No these are PBT keys. The matte is achieved by the surface texture - which itself is determined by the mold surface. PBT is hard and dry to the touch.

I'm guessing / hoping that it is the same matte finish used for KAT.  As much as I like the glossy KAM finish when it supports the design (e.g. KAM Little Pilot), imho matte is far more appropriate for this design.  Looks great, feels great, can't wait.

The NK65 superuser edition will be barebones, so it won't come with caps or switches. This means you'll be able to choose your preferred mods option rather than having it chosen for you bundled with the board :)
