Where do you store your unsused keycaps?
« on: Thu, 13 February 2014, 13:03:33 »
I just wanted to get everyones input as to where you store your unsued key caps. I have seen http://www.elitekeyboards.com/products.php?sub=access,cherrymxkeys&pid=us104_case and http://www.keypop.net/product/keycap-display-case for sale and was wondering if anyone had experience with either of those or knows of any other storage medians. Thanks

I have used both of those and they are ok. The elite case is good for storing a standard full size set but sometimes you can have a little extra resistance removing keys that causes other keys to pop out.

The key pop cases are nice for storing either an entire key set or random keys or whatever.

Most of my caps are in small plastic zip baggies in cardboard boxes.

I've found a few different plastic storage containers of varying sizes for storing different caps, something like this

If you check the links below, that's how I store my caps.

Edit: The smaller hobby box from the Container Store that I use to store switches/caps/modding stuff like diodes. Then I have this larger box for sets and novelties.

Ah okay, so there really is nothing on the market made to store key caps nice and efficient yet. I like the tackle box idea, but I was maybe looking for something with a bit more organization as I hate rummaging through lots of items. I guess I will either have to deal or make something Thanks :thumb:

What do you mean by "efficient"? Seems like the two boxes you linked and my Amac boxes are good for sets. Then ray's solution is great for novelties. What are you looking for in a box?

I don't really know, It's probably one of those things where you think "wouldn't it be cool if" but when applied to real life is impractical. I have a picture in my head of something that holds each individual key, is heavy duty and makes finding a specific key quick and easy. Like I said it is one of those things... When I say efficiency I mean being able to find something without rummaging through everything. Yes I know it is picky and probably impractical but that is who I am. Not that finding a key cap in a tackle box would take longer than a few minutes it's more like the idea that put's me off. Anyways, Like I said either I deal or invent something.

At the Container store, they sell these boxes that are like the ones ray showed except you can get them in like 10x10 or bigger. You can also buy boxes that allow you to make your own internal partitions. They're both clear and you can fit one cap in each of the partitions. Buy like 5 of those and stack em up? Or you can find a bigger box to carry them all around in.

They also sell some other little knick knack holders.

You can also get a tacklebox that has lots of small partitions.

Just buy a cheap cherry MY board off ebay, screw it to the wall.

And the clear cases from elite are probably your best bet, they make it pretty easy to find caps quickly and if you have multiples they have tabs on the top you could hang them up.

It's just that I have seen how much time some people put into making things, for example, a single key cap and I thought that maybe there would be something made exclusively to hold keycaps and be able to store more than 1 full set. I had a feeling I would have to do something along the lines of the 2 previous comments. I have no problem being creative I was just asking if there was something out there I was unaware of

After more research I found these http://keyshop.pimpmykeyboard.com/product/modular-displaystorage-kit-45-position

This looks like more along the lines of what I had in my head. Has anyone used these before?

Inside Ziplog bags because I'm a bit lazy and I'm not really concerned with making them "presentable" since they're mostly for my eyes only.

I just keep them in ziploc bags, I should really get some sort of storage case, maybe once/if I get more brobots and some click clacks, everything I have right now are just some simple novelty doubleshots and dyesubs.

I have been eyeing the case from gasmask keycaps.

i put them in ziplock bags according to keyset or profile, and they go into a box.

all my novelty keys are on my ducky shine 2  ;D
but if they are not, i guess they go into smaller ziplock bags and into the box they go...right next to my bed.

I use ziplock bags that they caps usually come in and mark the bags by row/profile. If it's a complete set ill put them all in a big bag.

Bags are scattered all over the house.

someone needs to make a fancy as hell transparent case that has a top flip cover.  i'm tired of having to undo flaps just to put a single key away.

yep, but for a full set. some layout like keypops and with a top cover that is flipped opened, rather than trays that are slid out

i do plan on getting one of those during the next gasmasks sale for just my noveltys though.  nice and small.

Right now, mine are sitting in ziploc bags in a box in my closet. Once I get some cash, I plan on getting some of the plastic trays from elitekeyboards.
