How do you manage your multiple keyboards?
« on: Sat, 24 October 2015, 17:53:38 »
I really mean how do you use your keyboards if you have multiple? Do you have a rotation? Do you just change as you please?
I'm not really sure what I do. If I feel like topre, I'll get out my hhkb. If I want buckling springs then I'll get out my SSK. But sometimes I feel like I am neglecting one or the other.

Same, ever since I got my Poker II, I hardly use any other keyboards. I try to rotate from time to time, depending on what switch I am feeling though.

My rotation of 3boards (the other are in the closet) are onto a table right next to my desk and I switch them out.

Rotate depending on the mood.
If I've been drinking I like my ssk
If I've been smoking I like my 1800
If I need to do work at my computer I like my ergodox
If I've been feeling lazy I like my HHKB
If my GF is gonna be on my computer she likes my novatouch
You get the idea.

If I need to type for a while then I'll use my hhkb, but if I'm gaming then I use my 1800

Depends what I'm doing. If I'm going to be doing something that requires using the mouse a lot, I prefer one of my TKLs. If I'm building queries, writing posts/reports/scripts/whatever, in other words, something keyboard heavy, then I prefer one of my 60% boards.

I could probably get away with just using a TKL with Hasu's USB converter as well, since I could then program my TKL to match my 60%... but my desktop at home already has 4 input devices plugged in full time (typically HHKB, G13, Ouroboros, and L-trac), so I prefer the smaller form factor when I can get away with it.

As to different types of switches - its really all about what I feel like using. I figure if a board doesn't get used in a couple months, I should probably get rid of it. Assuming it's in one piece *eyes novatouch missing top half of case*

I'm also not a collector, I have enough crap lying around :P

This is my fear... I want so many boards but feel like I will end up with 1 that actually gets use and the others just sit there and look pretty...

I'm especially fearful if I get my hands on a FC660C since I have so much $$ in MX stuff already.

I usually flip between a couple favorites somewhat randomly, whichever one I have been last tinkering with usually. Some others go on the wall mount thing.

I have been keeping my Ducky Mini (clears) in the closet because I got it mostly for a Surface Pro that I never actually bought. I switch occasionally but stay mostly with my G2 Pro since I prefer the MX Blues. Though I just got a K65 that I'm going to strip and put in Zealio 65s in and I have a feeling that's going to be my main when I'm done.

I only have three keyboards and a big desk with monitor arms, so I have lots of desk real estate. I usually keep all three plugged in and just grab the one I want to use at the time.

Yeah, I like to keep the ones I'm not using on display so that I can at least appreciate them, more so than having them in a box or closet somewhere!

I feel bad neglecting my more expensive boards - don't really care about my old Ducky Shines or Poker that much but if I don't use my GON for a couple of days I feel wasteful.

Otherwise most boards are kind of just sitting in my closet

My wife manages mine for me. I plug one in with blank caps, she unplugs it and plugs one in with legends.   :))  I rotate them out at work more than I do at home. Let one come with me for a week or two, then swap it for something else.

Generally, I do 48% of my keyboarding on whatever is my main keyboard for my desktop system at the time-- currently Keycool-- and another 48% on the built-in keyboard of my laptop. The remaining 4% reflects the fact that I occasionally like a bit of variety and will take out one of my other keyboards from the closet and use it with one or the other system for a little while before putting it back.

The keyboards in the closet also serve as backups. I like to have at least one keyboard that I consider usable on standby in case the main keyboard fails or suffers a destructive accident. Neither of my reserve mechs are really at 100% for me, so ideally I should acquire at least one additional keyboard, though, for now, alternative budgetary demands will have to take precedence.

During (less lean) times in the past, I've occasionally gone over the point of having both a main keyboard and a fully functional backup, due to wanting to acquire keyboards for other reasons (better feel and/or performance, layout suitability, etc.). Once that happens, I start to give in to the temptation to use my inferior or less capable keyboards for DIY projects. Due to my ineptitude, this tends to end badly for the keyboards concerned, so it's very unlikely that I'll ever have more than 3-4 keyboards at a time.

I put all of them on different systems--servers, dedicated task systems, etc.  All of them find a good home that way and never really move.

My brother and I try to keep them in original boxes, and our basement is completely packed with them.

Wish there was a better system to stack keyboards on top of each other, or even display them.

When I have more than one board, which at the current time I unfortunately do not, the ones not in use are normally sitting in boxes or down in my basement workspace.

I only have 3 - work, home and travel.   I'm going to buy a G410 later this year for gaming and then I guess I will have a gaming board and a home typing board....  but I might sell or give to a friend my spare.

I am a little bit of a collector and horder so I work hard at not keeping things  I don't use often.  It's hard but I feel better for it.

I want to try topre one day... really want to try that before I buy a board just for that.

I have two personally, with one that I never use that sits at home. First is a GON TKL with clears, and I prefer using that when playing games or doing lots of typing (or showing off my e-peen, I guess). The second is a HHKB Type-S, which I've had for a while now, and it's just so comfortable. I like it for everyday use and portability, plus when I'm in a bad mood, the thocks are so relaxing. I wonder if and when GON will start making Topre-compatible PCBs... true keyboard euphoria/endgame for me would silenced 45g Topre on a GON metal/acrylic keyboard with Cherry-compatible keycaps.

Oh yeah, back to the question. Even if I only use one for a while, I know I still love using both, so there's no guilt. So I make sure only to keep keyboards I wouldn't mind using for long periods of time, others are passed on to people who like them. Love all thy keyboards, and thou shalt be content.

I swap mine out when I feel like it, and usually one is kept on strict travel duty back and forth to school and other places. Right now it's one of my Phantoms, I chose it because it happened to be the quietest. Before that, my QFR.

It's hard to choose between a KMAC and an SSK though, so sometimes I feel a little guilty. I keep them out in the open (on top of my computer case, on my desks) when I'm not using them because I like to look at them. Eventually I'd like to do some display shelves or something, because I love them too much.  :))

If I find that I never use a board anymore, I usually let go of it so that someone else can appreciate it and so I can afford to buy a board/keyset/something that I will use more.  :thumb:

"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

This helps A LOT to pare down your stuff.  Just look at moving it and you'll be thinking, do I really need this?

I have a lot of stuff I have plans for, but just not enough time because there's always some major fire in my life that sucks up half a decade at a time. :(  'Someday' I promise myself!

I don't really. I use one at home and use one at work.

I used to have multiple keyboards, some unused (Filco, Matias, Full size Realforce). But since then I have kind of settled on the Realforce tenkeyless as my go-to keyboards. I now have one stock at work (variable weight) and one with some different keycaps at home (uniform 45g). All of the other keyboards I simply sold or traded.

Mine's based on task.

During the day when no one is around and I need to write or code, MX greens TKL.

Maybe someone is in the room, and I still want tactile. Switch to my browns.

Oh, now it's late, and I don't want to bother anyone? Switch to my lubed blacks with O-rings.

Alright, now I'm gaming and need a lot of mouse space... Better switch to my PokerII with clears.

I have never actually owned multiple keyboards but right now I do, currently assembling a ergodox and waiting for the keycaps to arrive for my realforce.

What I'm thinking is when I have to type I'll be using the realforce and gaming will be using the ergodox ergo clear switches. Luckily my desk can fit the realforce at the keyboard tray and ergodox on top of the desk

Its definitely a random rotation between boards, but after switching to one I tend to keep with it for a few weeks. What I find interesting is that I can never make a decision on which I prefer more. Every time I begin using the other board I'm surprised by the switches and I begin telling myself that I prefer it over the other. I can't even imagine what this cycle is going to be like when I add another switch to the rotation.

I admire your dedication.

I hoard way too much, including keyboards now.  And fountain pens, thanks' Geekhack.

I did manage to throw out a few dozen old computers when we moved house, and it felt good when they were finally gone.

But I don't think I could throw everything out.  Not just yet.

Can always throw away those unused boards into my mailbox.  :thumb:

After lugging my first one to and from work for a couple months, I decided to have one for home and one for work. I'm working on an alps project though and will eventually want to try out topre and BS. I will probably cycle my boards at home depending on what im doing or preference

 Hi guys,

really interesting how much people can talk about keyboards. ;) So far I always used one keyboard, but now I am thinking about using two in the future. Funny enough they are the same Model, just different switches. Not sure if that makes sense. But with MX-Red Switches I can play better, while I noticed with MX-Brown switches I can type better. Does that make sense or is it just me imagining it ?

Or is it even counter productive to use different switches for the wrists, can that lead to more pain in the long run or do I just get used to it ?

Cheers

I got my first Mechanical Keyboard after reading Dell AT101W review by CPTBadAss - Yupp it was the same model
Next was CM QFR Ultimate with MX Browns (CPTBadAss replied to my post about best transfer from Black Complicated ALPS to MX, he suggested browns, bought browns).

After that it was hard to handle, accumulated through cheapest means possible around 12 keyboards and tried to rotate them...all in search for my End Game keyboard. Or was it because I felt not using my boards was not good if I had them.
Wend through BS, MX of plenty of flavours, ALPS etc.

Currently have 3 mechanical keyboards in use -
My work boards CM QFR Ultimate + Tipro 128 MX black matrix,
And board at home Apple M0118

All in all - I've found out that most keyboards did not find good use...sold them off to Co-Workers for next to nothing.
I feel better now, that I can see other people enjoy boards that otherwise would be barely used.

I wanted to keep the Dell for home use...Co-worker loved it so much he just had to have it for work.

Thank you CPTBadAss for starting my journey into keyboards...made me learn alot.
Thank you all for giving so much info on this forum, so many great minds combined here, no forum beats GH :)

I just keep both on my desk because they look cool :D. One board is my Poker II with MX cherry clears and the other board is my HHKB. The only thing about switching between the two is that the backspace on the HHKB always messes me up. I think next year when I start working (I graduate this year), I'll have another desk at work so I can just leave a keyboard at work potentially.

For me its simply both the Corsair K95 in brown and red switches. Both have something for some use that the other isn't as good for. Never thought it makes sense with 2 keyboards but the feel says otherwise.

Nope, perfectly normal.  Once you figure out what works best, you'll have to have it.  And just like different clothes for different weather, there's always the right keyboard for the job.  :thumb:

You should try swapping cases, leave the Poker 2 in the aluminum case and bring the Poker 3 in the plastic case. I have had a few people tell me they didn't want to transport a Poker 3 due to the heavy aluminum case.

I have a keyboard tray. depending on the activity dictates which gets used. they 60% is up on the desk level with the monitor, the 100% is on the keyboard tray and the logitech media controller is stowed away to the side by the router and gets pulled up whenver there is a need to be away from the desk. all are hooked up 100% of the time I am at home. the 60% travels with me to work 3-4 days a week and its hooked up when needed but the 100% membrane gets used when I have tk activities seriuosly needed.

Okay so I have a topre and cherry mx. The cherry has been sitting in the drawer because I have not been gaming very much. It's weird having two boards and I ask my self, "self, why do you have two boards?". I guess it's good to have a backup. I have a backup mouse in case my main one were to breaks. So what started as a keyboard for when I game has mostly become a backup.
Peace, love and keyboards.

Weeeell…

I have about, ahem, a hundred keyboards lying all over the place. I need MOAR boxes!

Meanwhile, I just type on my ErgoDox (for prolonged sessions, typically at my desktop), TypeMatrix 2030 (on the go, because I'm not afraid to toss it in a backpack) and *sometimes* some staggered compact keyboard for editing/gaming/… (Noppoo Choc Mini, modded CM Storm QFR or some Cherry G80-1800).

So you think that using two different mechanical switches cant be bad for the wrist ? In the beginning, after using the Red Switches, i had some pain in my wrist. But when I changed my arm position and seating, it went better again. Now that I tried the brown switches, same keyboard model, i feel some slight pain again. Is that because i shouldnt use two different switches, or is that a sign that my wrist / arm is getting used to it or what do you think ?

Just want to be sure, so I can return the keyboards I will not keep, in time.

Each keyboard has a different feel to it requiring different efforts from your hands at different times.  I'm sure once you find the sweet spot on each and get used to each, swapping won't be a real effort once you have your setup right.

I have 3 boards I use, a GON HHKB, 55g HHKB, and my MA42. The HHKB is my class/ library board and at home I change boards based on what switch I want to use.

On the subject of wrist pain, it probably has to do with your posture/ arm placement when typing.
People in the 1980s, in general, were clearly just better than we are now in every measurable way.

The dumber the reason the more it must be done

And I don't know if that's normal as well, but it's ALWAYS my right wrist. Never my left. So if I, like you're saying, hold my arm wrong or don't sit correct, why would it always be my right wrist and not the other? Last night I really had a lot of pain, couldn't type anymore.
Wondering if that keyboard is the right one for me, thinking of returning it as well. Unfortunately very few mechanical Keyboards these days have wrist rests anymore, no idea why.

If it's your right wrist on either board, then you are doing something odd with your right wrist that strains it over time.  You'll need to experiment with your hands and body positioning to find out what that is.  But stop typing as soon as you have pain or you're going to permanently damage your hand!

So far I only have 2 keyboards, one at home and one in my dorm room. If I end up getting too many I might build a display rack for both my keyboards and my increasing collection of artisan caps, which are currently stored away in the closet.

I must have at least 100 keyboards. Most are dirt-encrusted relics in boxes awaiting eventual refurbishing and possible resale. Others are ready for use, also in boxes. Because I have three workstations (one at home and two at work), I can keep three keyboards in play at a time. I don't have a strict rotation, but from time to time I feel the urge to change keyboards. Most of the time, I stick with my silenced HHKB Pro 2, but at the moment I am using a silenced RF87UB45.

I use a distributed model.  I’ll occasionally move things around, but the current line-up is:

Home:  Corsair K95 (Cherry red) on my PC, refurbished Model M on my wife’s (which replaces the OEM POS that came with her PC, though I think the beauty of buckling springs isn’t something she notices)

Summer place:  Realforce 87u  with my laptop, and Mattias Mini Quiet Pro on my wife’s machine

Office: Realforce 103u on my desktop, and Northgate Omni Key Ultra connected to my laptop

The laptop, a Thinkpad T450s, has a pretty nice keyboard of its own, but I plug in a mech when I can.

I find the hardest thing about switching among boards isn’t the difference in the switches – I enjoy the variety.  The problem is difference in layouts – the laptop in particular has a number of keys in nonstandard sizes and locations.

I keep 4 on my desk (model M, acer with white alps, ducky shin 3 with browns, ergodox with clears) and the rest are on a shelf in the closet until I bring them out for a turn.  I don't use some of them that I don't like, like the space invaders, XM alps, or dampened cream alps.  I also have some TKL MX boards around the house at other computers.

I am thinking of making some sort of vertical wall mount rack to display them all, but I haven't worked out the details yet.

That's what gets me too.  I tried a Unicomp M122 for the first time today.  Felt great, but I couldn't find half of what I was used to.  The funniest part was when I tried to hit escape and there's not even a key in that area, lol.

Loaned some to interested coworkers; otherwise they get rotated in and out of storage boxes...

I can't handle 1+ keyboards, especially not 1+ switch types, I was previously always building/buying 2+ keyboards for rotation, yet it never worked, I currently have a single keyboard that I maintain
(1+ switch types doesn't work, even if the layout is identical, my muscle memories doesn't work from tactile to clickies for example, I'm maimed)

I only need a second keyboard as spare when I'm working on my main keyboard (changing keycaps, servicing stabs etc.)

Might build a second identical keyboard just to make it an actual spare, tho I almost always regret it, as with time better things come along (custom pcb's on the horizon)

TL;DR: one is simple

Lubed switches, improved stabilisers, 1.75/1.25 arrows for fast arrow usage, tmk firmware/overrides, got all that I want/need, I have a USB switch, switching the same keyboard between OSX/Windows too, has a windows layer that makes it more windows friendly

Struggling with keycap colors tho, currently have too many colors on that doesn't go too well, going to normalize things more, likely going to stick to CMYW only and leave Dolch Esc+Backspace's on similar to the Pre-One duos

I usually flip between a couple favorites somewhat randomly, whichever one I have been last tinkering with usually. Some others go on the wall mount thing.

THIS IS SICK!

I usually take my little 60% with me around uni and I will also use it at home if I doing a lot of work that requires the mouse. I will use my TKL when I am playing EVE though as I need the function keys. TBH I need more keyboards than I got. I've got 3 computers but only 2 keyboards. ^:/

impossible, the bottleneck is the arrows for me, a TKL would be simpler but the width gain from the 60% really eases/improves mouse usage

How long did you try it for? It took me a while to not having dedicated arrow keys but now I absolutely prefer having them on a function layer and assigned to IJKL

It took me a while to get used to HHKB arrow layer, but then I was using TKL at work and HHKB only for a couple of hours in the evening.

I still prefer TKL arrows for a lot of things, but I can use HHKB arrows without any difficulty now.

Well I have 3 keyboards right now.

I do use my Poker for both school and some gaming at home when I don't feel like using my A.87. My 3rd keyboard has been sitting in a corner but I haven't gotten rid of it because it was my first keyboard.

Have you ever tried space-FN? I was in the same shoes you are, a year ago. I am now typing in a Nerd60 with no need for dedicated arrows at all, using a VIM style arrows located at the home row with even more productivity than to have them at the right side, as I use to have in my Poker X and Leo FC660M. I always had issues sourcing key caps for the FC660M, I really hate that, now I am using standard ANSI winkey less.

1u arrows in a crowded layout isn't very usable, that's why I switched to 1.25 ones, however a fc660c would be an interesting experience (keycap inflexibility is still bad tho, also the case is plastic, so it would just be a fling)

How long did you try it for? It took me a while to not having dedicated arrow keys but now I absolutely prefer having them on a function layer and assigned to IJKL

Not long but enough to understand that I'm a crude typist, using non-dedicated arrows would make me a dumbass, taking the most used keys and putting them under a layer just doesn't make sense

It depends a lot on what kind of a typist you are and what exactly you do, with my typing/programming style I use arrows at extremes, however H/IJKL/M arrows are probably programmer arrows too, so it depends :)

Out of curiosity, have you tried playing Broforce with them? (or any other game that uses arrows)
While playing Broforce I realised that my typing style is pretty similar, I travel a lot with the arrows

No I didn't, I'm guessing you are a home-row typist, I'm strictly not

I was in your shoes 2-3 months ago, that's why I built those 2 keyboards, so that I can have a keyboard with standard keycaps (the 1u arrows and such), the logic was to get keycaps first, and find/build a keyboard for those keycaps, I couldn't be more wrong, optimal typing experience should come first and keycaps should be a late quest

+, Further wearing off topic, I could get a custom SP DCS/SA or DSA keycap set for a fraction of the cost I spent gathering GMK/other keycaps for several awkward layouts, so after doing all these, finding the optimal layout/keyboard first makes a lot of sense, free from keycap worries

I try to find time to rotate keyboards, but it can be difficult. I try to be consistent with switch type and computer activity, e.g. Cherry Blacks for FPS games, Reds for RTS, Blues for typing at home, Topre at work (programmer by trade). This may mean swapping out a lot, but it gives me a good excuse to change boards :)

both of my full-size keyboards now have legends because my girlfriend uses my computer quite often (almost as much as i do) and she's too lazy to swap out the keyboards. the ducky shine 5 has the tai hao miamis and the wasd v2 has side-printed mints. generally i'll end up unplugging whatever keyboard is plugged in and use my pok3r (which is generally in my backpack)
Let's get this straight. There is nothing cool about keyboards we're all lame as fk.

I rotate pretty randomly. I have a few mech keyboards and I have older membrane keyboards that still feel nice to type on. I have a little cabinet to put them in and that's where I store them. But there's still maybe a couple that are strewn about on my desk that I switch out with the main one. A lot of it has to do with the kind of keyboard sound I want to hear. And since there's a fair bit of variety of switches, I can finish typing like a paragraph and switch to something else. It's weird doing it on sound, but that's why I do it haha

So fancy!

I currently only have a single keyboard, but will soon get a new one. The pok3r in white with clears, and when I get that ill retire this one to my Rpi I guess as I am trying to set up a space for my Rpi where I can use linux whenever im not using my main machine. however im not using multiple keyboards atm but I have been using 2 mice and a tablet for a while, I have the G400s and MX master from logitech and I mostly only use my G400s for gaming and for everything else I use the Master. the tablet is used for Osu! (rythm game) and school work, doodling notes and such.

I built up my collection to have what I consider the best for each usage type, and switch accordingly.

356 Mini or Realforce 55g for in the office working. (exclusively the Mini for the past couple months)

Model F for at-home working.

Filco or Realforce for games (pretty rare lately). Filco has been in my drawer at work so the Realforce has been there for the rare times I'm not using my XBox controller.

I have an old record player cabinet. The top lid holds two tenkeyless boards perfectly (Realforce and Filco currently) as well as provide easy access for switching boards, and there are three cupboards below that store my 60%'s and keycap sets, etc.

Don't they have like a pick up service, where if you've already printed your label and everything they'll just grab the package?

For now I type on my RS96 and leave my two Pok3rs to collect dust. I have three boards coming that I have to build, curious to see how much use they're all going to get.

If you have a bunch of boards collecting dust, why don't you just sell them? :P

Better still, put something over them to keep the dust off!  Even a tea towel will do.

Right now I have one main board for my desktop - a Ducky G2 Pro.  I just use the laptop's keyboard for the laptop.  My Model M and SGI Granite are stored in the closet with a couple MS Ergo models and a Sun Type 5 board.

I've used the Granite and Model M a bit prior to having the Ducky but most definitely missed having media controls and the Windows key.  I've realized that both are a must for me.  Neither lasted long for use and I went back to the MS Ergo 4000 until the Ducky was ordered.

I always want to buy more keyboards (Topre, ergo clear 60% with metal case, buckling spring etc) even though I have no idea why I need more keyboards. I can't really find a use case for them. I don't have multiple computers or work places.
TMK Alps64 w/ Matias Quiet Switches in KBP V60 case.
Infinity60 with SKCM Orange Switches w/ TMK.
CM Storm QRF w/ Frosty Flake controller, Cherry MX Blue Switches and TMK firmware.

Coming:
Ellipse Model F F62.

LOL I don't have a real reason for having more than a couple to be honest, but the appeal of getting new keyboards and experiencing different switches/brands/sizes is just so enticing.

If anything I probably have less reason for owning multiple keyboards than non-enthusiasts given that by being a mostly 60% user I can take my keyboard to work without any real issue

Hahaha alternatively, even as a mostly 60% user, it would help to have backups in case your super portable daily driver somehow has a problem. Just throwing it out there.

I can give them a good home where they'll be connected to a system and used regularly.  :thumb:

I'm lucky enough to have a bunch of systems for different purposes, some old, some really old, but all working and doing a job.  So since they're working and need a keyboard, the Ms I have are almost all connected.

I do want to try other switches though, and since the resale value of a used keyboard is essentially what you paid for it, the small price of shipping is a good way to 'feel' your way around.  :thumb:

I currently have 3, all Ducky. One is 60%, the others are full. And I have an old Qpad somewhere, that's it. But I only keep that in case of emergency.

Ducky Shine 3 TKL (MX-Blue/Green LEDs) - Ducky Shine 3 (MX-Red/Pink LEDs) - Ducky Shine 4 (MX-Blue/Red&Blue LEDs) - CM Storm Quickfire TK (MX-Brown/White LEDs) - TTeSports Poseidon Z RGB (Kailh-Blue)

Since my passion is 60%, I've found that the Container Store Shoe Box works perfectly for most of my boards. With a layer of foam in between them, I find that I can fit two boards in one box.

For the day-to-day, I have one of intelli78's hard cases that I use in my office to store an alternative keyboard. Towards the end-of-the-day, I swap out my daily driver with something different. Today it'll be my Duck Viper.

Well, ever since I got my cases for the Lightpad and Octagon that are my typical daily drivers, I have been able to rotate freely.

I love the cases btw:

Wish I had cases for all my boards!

Anyway. I feel like nothing really beats the feel of typing on my Octagon, even though I prefer Alps. There's just something about the Octagon that kind of enchants me. Might be the pretty lights, the Jukebox key set, vintage blacks, or the heavy aluminum case, but it's still my overall favorite. We'll see if this changes at all when my Hammer case finally comes in for my 60% Alps Eagle project.

In any case, there are times I have a serious nostalgia trip and really want to use my old Dell AT101 which is only slightly younger than me or my Fame which is certainly older than me. Something about using boards that I've not only lovingly restored, but that have been workhorses and utilitarian for people a generation before me really makes me enjoy them quite a bit.

Also, it's kind of nice typing on a bygone switch family like Alps.

Just my rambling two cents.

I'm glad that my Hammer Eagle fits in the HHKB case I bought a long time ago in prep for a certain group buy, because I can't stand leaving any boards with heavy aluminum cases out if I'm not using them. They NEED a case. Eventually I'll order another hard case from Intelli again, but the HHKB case fits it nice and snug, thankfully.

I would also like some cases for my full size restored vintages, but Intelli doesn't offer cases for big foot style Alps boards, haha. I was thinking of getting a small musical keyboard case that could fit those boards. I dunno though. I just feel weird when boards are left out and exposed to the... not so harsh elements of my room. :P

What is a Hammer Eagle, and what is a HHKB case? Sounds interesting but I have no idea what you're referring to without pics.

I assume you put a Duck Eagle PCB inside a Hammer case, and then removed two keys, to place it in a HHKB case (the stock one?)

Please elaborate! :)

Haha, sorry I know all these terms can get confusing, especially since case is used as the term for a housing in this community, but by case I meant "carrying case," haha.

The HHKB carrying case I was referring to is this one! http://www.amazon.com/Carrying-Hacking-Keyboard-PD-KB01SD-Import/dp/B000FHSNFW Fantastic case, but I want something more personal for my build eventually.

This is what intelli and his fantastic artisan made for me for my Octagon and Lightpad (though the scheme and patch and fact they can be carried together was my idea, hehe :) ):

The Hammer Eagle is my Duck Eagle build. I'm really not sure what to call it, since it's a Duck Eagle PCB in a Hammer case (you had the right idea!) xD https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=77497.msg1952047#msg1952047

I think this should clear it all up, haha.

Boards that I don't think I'll use for awhile I lend to relatives to use if they like them.  The ones I do still keep in my possession are on top of books on bookshelves.  Might get an HHKB soon then I gotta decide what to do with my Pok3r.

I currently have a Jane, Orion v2, RS96, and two pok3rs. I first got my Pok3rs, then built the RS96 and never touched the Pok3rs again. I then built the Orion v2, my RS96 received a few hours a use afterwards. Now I finally built my Jane, not sure what I'll end up using for the most part, I don't mind the old browns I have in the Jane but I prefer the Zealios in my Orion and even prefer the vintage blues in my RS96 the most. The reason why I opted for browns in my Jane is so I can use it in a work environment and not annoy people.

So Steezus, do you plan on keeping your customs on rotation, or do you plan on selling the ones you use least, or just keeping them as a collection regardless of use?

My initial plan is to keep them in rotation, I'll probably end up selling the ones I use the least since more and more boards are coming out. I would like to collect them but if I do I want to make sure they will get used. I definitely like having variety though. :)

I really wanna build some sort of rack to keep my boards in... Not sure how to do it though with all the different form factors I have (from IBM Model M size to HHKB)

Maybe just build a general one that can house a full-size or 122?  That way you're pretty well covered regardless of size.

Think I might just get rid of my bigger boards

Do you just store the additional boards out in the open, or do you have carrying cases or boxes for storing them?

Now we're talking.  Though I couldn't do it.  Being in earthquake country, nothing as heavy as my spare keyboards would go on my wall unless they were pretty damn well bolted in.

Right now they're out in the open, I've messing around with them a fair bit lately either changing keysets, fixing something, etc. The worst part is that my apartment can get really dusty, if I just let them sit out all the time they would get really bad but I make sure to clean them. I've been waiting for yuktsi to come out with the gb for the storage cases, then I'll buy a bunch off of him.

Storage cases? Mind pointing me in the right direction of the interest check for these? I'm curious to see what they're like as I could use them myself. :D

Ahh, yeah. That's the OTD case, eh? I did look at those for a while before feeling as if they'd be a bad fit for my boards, since they're meant more for TKLs. :( That was a big reason I had a custom case made for my Octagon.

I believe they are the TKL cases, yuktsi said he should be able to sell them under $20 and be in geekhack colors. My favorite layout is by the LS and RS96 and then TKL. My RS96 is only about an inch longer but the same width so I'm hoping it will fit. I can't wait for the Jane numpad, that and the Jane together may end up being my go to keyboard to use. I kind of wish I put in some ergo clears in my Jane but that's what I'll do for my Jane CE.

Ahh, custom full aluminum-cased number pads are the best. Are there any renders of the Jane pad? Yeah, the Lightsaver-style 96 key layout is pretty sick aesthetically. It just doesn't work for me though. I guess I'm just too picky, haha. I prefer standalone numberpads and 75% layouts overall. TKLs are pretty, but a little clunky. I compromise with 60% and I think the layout has a lot of nice qualities, but it still doesn't beat 75% aside from portability. :P

Boards that I don't think I'll use for awhile I lend to relatives to use if they like them.  The ones I do still keep in my possession are on top of books on bookshelves.  Might get an HHKB soon then I gotta decide what to do with my Pok3r.

If you run out of relatives...  :p

Haha then I'll have all the clacks to myself.

I don't try too hard to manage my ~7 keyboards. It doesn't have to be rocket science. They wait patiently (in my garage) for when I get a hankerin' for what they have to offer. There's no need to feel guilty about not using them, they are built to serve, and stand ready to be used and for me to appreciate them all over again. All my keyboards are awesome in their own way, and I feel great that they are there for when I want a specific kb experience. I don't understand folks who only have one keyboard, that just seems weird. But maybe I'm the weird one. It's all good. My current daily driver is my new CODE  tkl with MX Clears. I am going to stick with that one until I feel like I am very familiar with all its characteristics. Generally speaking, sometimes I want a nice clean TKL model, and sometimes, only my CVT Avant Stellar will do - the huge board making feel like I am at the helm of the star ship Enterprise - warp factor one, engage!

OK, that's enough dorkiness for awhile.

Most of mine are vintage boards, I only have 3 modern boards (I think). Most of them are also not PC compatible so they are kind of my collectibles. I'll one day convert them to USB but as of right now I like to occasionally mess with them.
I proxy anything including keyboards (キーボード / 鍵盤), from both Japan (日本) and China (中國). For more information, you may visit my dedicated webpage here: https://www.keyboards.es/proxying.html

Right now I've been using my Realforce 87u for typing and Ducky DK9008G2 for gaming. My Model M and G84-4100 get no love though, the Model M is too big to fit on my desk and the G84's layout and switch feel just isn't to my preference. Might just sell the G84 and save up for some topre keycaps methinks.

The thing with this is keeping them clean.  They are all in the open there.

I left a few of my boards out for a couple of weeks, they got so dusty so quick. Nothing compressed air can't fix but it sure was a pain having to keep them clean. I need to buy some good cases.

I want to find a nice way to mount or display my favorite keyboards, but that seems like it could be tricky. Either that, or get carrying cases for each and every one, though I'd still like to put some on display from time to time. If I could find a carrying case that could fit full-sized vintage boards, I'd get a few of those. :3

Def gonna get a custom case for my Hammer Alps board and the next Octagon.

Displaying them is the tricky part, perhaps some sort of glass enclosure would be best to keep the dust out and yet keep them still on display. I'll probably end up buying a case for each one to ensure their safety.

I usually flip between a couple favorites somewhat randomly, whichever one I have been last tinkering with usually. Some others go on the wall mount thing.

I'm seeing an increase of my keyboard collection in the future, and that would be one damn cool way to store them.

"Yeah, and these here, these are my keyboards"

Welcome to Geekhack!

The thing with this is keeping them clean.  They are all in the open there.

I left a few of my boards out for a couple of weeks, they got so dusty so quick. Nothing compressed air can't fix but it sure was a pain having to keep them clean. I need to buy some good cases.

I place a tea towel on mine.

I'm gonna find some of the flat rate USPS boxes I've gotten in the mail and use those for my vintages. Mine have yet to get dusty since I often tinker with them and just tap on their keys for fun, but I don't want that to change if I stop giving them attention for some reason.  :-X

I've just resulted in putting all of my boards wrapped up in bubble wrap within a heavily padded box. Going home after finals Thursday so I'll probably bring them all home anyways so being in one box is convenient. I definitely need to find a better way to store them but for now this will do.

I guess my place isn't all that dusty? I've had them up on the wall that way for a few months and they only have a hint of dust. I guess having them upright like that leaves less surface area for dust to collect. I'd rather look at them and trade them out frequently than have them hidden in a box somewhere. I can dust them twice a year if that means I get to appreciate them more often!

I'd much rather have them on display than in a box as well. I'm in some college apartments which isn't the best. The water sucks here, it's really dusty, kids above me are noisy behind all hell haha. Until I can find a better alternative they'll just have to settle in a box. It'd be nice if we can get a GB for some acrylic covers or something.

I seem to live in a super dusty place.  When I  get a new keycap set in the mail, I open it up and put the keycaps on the GH layout chart to make sure they are all there, and there is noticable dust on them already!

KMAC never gets love, neither does GON nowadays since I don't go to LANs. Lightsaver travels back and forth between work, LZ never moves. Good stuff ^^

Just switched between pretty much all my boards today! Started with the Hammer Alps Eagle, then the Infinity, then the FAME, then the Dell AT101, and then the Octagon.

I'm too tired to really know which one I like the most, but I sure had fun clacking away on the FAME's blue Alps. The Hammer is so smooth with such subtle but nice clacks. The Infinity was smooth but delightfully tactile with orange Alps, and the Dell AT101 was a bit of a bumpy ride with the Salmon Alps. The Octagon is like typing on a buttery marshmallow. More travel than the Alps boards, but pretty much just as smooth (factory-lubed mint condition green Alps compared to super tuned up vintage MX blacks).

I like it though. :)

Also just locked in a buy for one of my absolute endgame vintage Alps boards, the Focus FK-555 w/ blue Alps. SO SO happy about that. I'll have to wait 'til over the holidays to buy it, but I'm happy to finally have the opportunity. :DDD

Use 1 at home, 1 for travel, and soon, 1 for work

I only have 3 keyboards - I keep one at work, and cycle the other two at home on a weekly basis.
