Keycap Holder(s)
« on: Sat, 24 October 2015, 19:29:41 »
UPDATE:
~~
Interest check here; https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=76826.0
~~

Greetings fellow Hack-ians!

I recently received a package from MassDrop and was surprised that it came with a little board holding all the keycaps in place nicely, picture of said board (green in color) is below:

Does anyone have any idea if you can purchase these? If so from who!?

Ps. No idea if this was posted in the correct section :3
PPs. Not at home at the moment, but can certainly take pictures of the one I received when I'm back from work in a week or so.

How are the caps mounted?  Are the stems attached or does the holder have square cut-outs for the bottom of the keys?

The stems (MX is this case) are attached to the board (?) and cannot be moved/changed, it's literally a keyboard without the electronics :D

I've been thinking about a shadowbox with foam in it to support the caps toward the glass to hang on the wall behind my monitors myself.

This will be a custom/one off project no doubt?

Do you mean the cardboard with holes cut out for the caps? I ordered some KeyCool Gradients from MassDrop and received something like that. It didn't travel very well, and the keycaps were all kind of at the bottom of the box, which was really unfortunate for trying to get the gradient to look right (I still move keycaps around on it from time to time).

Not at all, this is an actual board (plastic) with MX stems that the caps fit into very nicely.

Currently in the process of designing one now. Printed the first stem, came out a little weird.
I can probably have the STL's up tonight, if anyone wants to print them.
Also, if anyone has the exact size of the stems, will they post? I don't have any calipers, and after google and my own measurements, I haven't been able to get the exact measurements

Keycools are a bit different, I also got mine in a plastic bag. These NKPC rainbows (currently on MD) have the board.

I have it uploaded to Thingiverse now. http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1094451
Mostly for artisans, since most printers can't print something the size of a 100% board :P

Yeah man, it's cool. Got any idea on the price?

I'm gonna have one of these in a few weeks from another keycap set but it would be heaps more convenient for storage of all the others and keeping them in order!

No idea on price :( unfortuantely I havn't been able to engage the Massdrop folks as much as I would like on this. The best way is to make sure we hit some sort of high interest check numbers so the manufacturer has some idea of how serious we are :)

I voted for it on MD just now. I could really use a bunch of these.

I could also use a similar holder that is just a 10 x 6 grid (for keyset extras).

This is a neat concept.  I was thinking it would be neat to have an 'artisan display' that had multi height 'pedestals' for the individual keys--something that held 8-10 of them.  Or I could be completely off here as I don't own a single artisan...

These looks so cheap compared to the nice board style in the first post.  But having a cover is nice too.

I suppose if it came in a box then it would not only have a cover, it would have an entire enclosure which would be stackable, though they'd take up more space vertically than the clamshell design. It would also be considerably more expensive than $6.

I want something to organize and store my extra keycap sets, not something to display them like jewelry. The $6 clamshell is more practical for my needs, but I might get one of the first kind just to try it out.
