Welcome to the first Cherry MX5000 tour!

This is absolutely without a doubt my favourite MX keyboard of all time, and I want to spread the love :thumb:

Please read the below requirements/terms in full and join up! :thumb:

Entrance requirements and terms :
  • Live within CONUS! I'm doing a CONUS tour because that's where the keyboard is currently located, but if this tour is successful then an EU one may commence!
  • Have at least 500 posts (you can try applying without this, but your chances of getting in are very slim unless I have extensive experience with you)
  • Have at least 1 year of membership under your belt (you can try applying without this, but your chances of getting in are very slim unless I have extensive experience with you)
  • I must trust you. If I have issues with anyone applying then I may not allow them to join.
  • You must ship the keyboard on to the next participant VIA A TRACKED, EXPRESS USPS SERVICE after 1 week of having the keyboard.
  • Treat the keyboard with some respect! :'( Don't drop it, don't scratch it and don't disassemble it beyond taking the keycaps off.
  • If the keyboard gets dirty then you should clean it. Nobody likes someone else's finger grease :))
  • You must post a review of the keyboard. It can be a simple "I liked it!"; "I hated it!", or it can be a full write up.
  • I may limit the number of participants, so get in quick!

Please just post in this thread saying that you want to join in order to apply ^-^

Tour will commence after riotonthebay has given the keyboard a good try. It will be shipped to him in the next week or so. I'm putting this up so that we can get a decent number of participants ready.

Tour will be run on DT also. Participants will likely be put in a random order :)

Here is the keyboard to be sent around :

Thanks for looking! I hope we can have a good tour, and I hope that we can spread the love that is the MX5000!

Express USPS like the overnight shipping service USPS has?
I think even regular priority should be OK. By express I mainly meant anything but first class :))

also, not sure how complex you want to get, but you could arrange the order to make the shipping distances as short as possible, which would possibly save us all a little money

Sigh...

Can the last person send it back to me instead? Then I can send it to Photeq? ;)
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

If it's going to be shipped Priority or Priority Express, it doesn't matter what the distances are.

Cool, I'd like to be in on the tour then :).

Awesome tour Photekq.  I am very tempted to put my name in, but am very worried that I might like it too much and not be able to find one.  Nubbinator is already trying to wreck my wallet and convert me by letting me borrow his HHKB pro2.

Incredible faith in humanity here Photekq.  As much as I would love to join, I have to decline.  The last time I was part of a tour, said piece never arrived to me and was never seen again.  I know it was a freak chance, but I don't want to risk it with such a nice piece.

I am, but I am also paranoid about it getting lost in the mail to me like the switch tester that CBA sent on a tour.

Just a quick note that I've definitely given this keyboard a good try and have spoken to pho about shipping it onto the next person in line, so expect more movement soon. A review of my experience with it will follow soon.  :thumb:

did you only have it for a week?  seems like it's been forever.  can't wait to try nonetheless

Still have it. Awaiting instructions from Pho. Sent him a message a while ago saying I was ready to ship whenever, I expect he's just busy to coordinate the thing.

Is this a skam tour?

I've had my turn scamming Pho, whenever he lets me know who to send it on to, I'll let them have an opportunity to scam him as well.

Well, my time has come and gone with the MX5000.  Thank you so much Photekq for the time with your board.  It is truly a unique board and to get to try one in such wonderful condition and with these wonderfully shiny OG doubleshots made it even better.  Although I am not a huge fan of light switches, it was still a very good typing experience with the nicely worn in mx browns (ie: not scratchy at all), especially once I figured out that I just don't like the board tented and prefer to have about 15 deg. open on the middle.  I also didn't need to use the cool little space bar extensions since I only use the very right edge of the right side.  I also really liked the layout of the board when I tried it for a while completely closed down.  This would be a killer layout for someone to make in a modern solid board.

One neat thing that I noticed during my use was the great feel of the pcb mounted switches.  I have always liked the soft feel of a pcb mounted switch, but the unique thing about this board is that the individual pcbs are very small, so they don't flex too much like a full size board.  The bottoming out of these light switches was never jarring like the bottom out of a plate mounted brown or blue.

Pictures of when I was first giving it a go with the center risers:

wut. i'd buy a ****ty IBM board for that green V2

Your description of PCB mounted Browns is making me crave a softer-mounted board.

Have you ever used a split keyboard before? I'm wondering if there was any adjustment to it for you.

I also just noticed the arrangement of the nav cluster, Home and End side-by-side like that with the normal Del/Ins and Pg Up/Down looks like an absolutely perfect arrangement.

The only other split layout board I have used is the Microsoft one.  My Mom types a ton and needed to get more ergonomic and got one.  I much prefer the MX5000 as the layout is still flat.  The microsoft board is domed and just feels weird (not to mention super mushy).  I tried a few different amounts of dome and split angle and found that I don't much care for the dome, but do like a slight split.

And yeah, the layout of the board is killer.  This exact layout with about 15 deg of split and an option so that I could do pcb mount would be ridiculous.  Mounted in a nice acrylic or aluminum case and is would be perfect.

Great description Badwrench! I felt the same way. I actually just sourced some vintage browns for an upcoming build, and am strongly considering PCB mounting them to try to get something closer to the G80-5000. I don't think it's going to be possible though, because I think the plastic case also contributes to the feel.

Anyways, great board. Definitely will consider getting one down the line.

Is this still ongoing? I think I made it on the list, but haven't seen anything since January.
