More
Troubled Minds is only a couple of weeks away from shipping, and so I want to start the interest check for the second set. I did a poll last year and it was an overwhelming win for Unit 03, but with several sets (in SA even) in blue coming out and planned, I decided to go with the Flash/Unit 02 set. You have probably seen my first mockups, and after revisiting the design and looking at reference images again, I decided to change the colors and I believe it came out a lot better. I already have novelty kits designed, but as always I would like the community steer the set in the right direction, so suggestions and criticisms are always welcome.

Set is planned to be in SA profile as with the first one, but nothing is finalized, not the color codes and not the profile.

Color Codes:
Red: RAS
Orange: OAS
White: WFK
Black: NN

It's why I came up with the white mods, going all red and orange is too loud, but also more faithful to the original. Main colors are white and red, the first image.

There's OBC, which is maybe too dull. The black mods is a maybe at the moment, if there's enough interest then maybe I add them as an alternate color pack. Doesn't really have that 02 vibe.

I agree with this. A more subtle orange would be nice. Even the white mods feels to McDonalds-ey for me.

I'll see what it looks like in a mockup, I don't think it has enough "Unit 02" feel though.

I prefer the rebuild version too, stay true (IMO) to the inspiration while toning down the loud colors. Not sure about novelties for each color, I was thinking I should go with the base colors selected, current mockups are just me checking out color combos.

I'm extremely interested in this, both in Unit 02 and Flash variants.  I looked at a couple images of the classic U02, and was thinking maybe the classic colorway could use some black in the mods to tone the orange down?  That is to say, some orange mods and some black mods.

Another point of consideration...maybe white legends for a Flash set would allow for a less McD's look when using the yellow?

Also, strong vote for an ergoDox set.

I've already considered mixing mod colors, but I think we still have to limit the base set's colors. This is one of the earlier mockups last year.

I would be happy to work on it but when I did a poll it was an overwhelming vote for Unit 03 actually, which was blue. I'd love to do the least popular Unit 00 in yellow, but people will still probably choose the blue variant regardless of the fact that there's a lot of blue sets in the works.

Oh, okay yeah Unit 03 is DEFINITELY my favorite. There are a lot of blue sets coming out, but I hope this set gets a chance someday. And that is great news about troubled minds, sounds like it shouldn't be too hard to pick one up in the future.

I prefer the yellow Unit 00 too, since it's not a color that's commonly used. I'll probably do a proper mock-up when I have the time to see how it might really look on a keyboard. :)

I've considered it, but it seemed like veering away from the theme/inspiration. Unit 02 is red with accents, The Flash too and Iron Man. They're not white or yellow with red accents.

I'll think about it some more. :)

The white and red is doing it for me.  The Black ESC is kickin, even the novelty yellow and red keys are dope as hell.  I just can't get over the base kit with the Mickey D's color.  Maybe its just the two loud colors red and orange that are doing it to me.  I'm no color expert and I can't knock the IC as I love your work (got my Troubled Minds in the mail on Tuesday so totally respect the work).  So, just wanted to ask... is the red base kit a keeper for this IC?

Yes, its the orange font on the red. Just wondering if you might consider a different color for the font and move the orange to maybe a separate key that helps retain the theme as designed.

Then again if the orange font stays, it does have its charm in its own unique way.

I think you DEFINITELY have something good going on with that idea. White would be really dope and even black would work too. I think an orange enter or backspace novelty key would boost the sale potential of a child kit and give participants an opt for sprucing up a base kit. Like the Lose Control and Hahaha keys. Nice touch.

+1 for creativity with red and orange. I just was experiencing orange shock I guess. I love both renders by the way, and I now better understand that we have to keep the theme to the art of the set.

May I suggest an addition to the characters represented by this color scheme?

This keyset matches the color scheme of the Bionicle character Tahu quite well. A couple Bionicle / Tahu themed novelties would totally sell me on this set, as if Unit 02 wasn't enough already. :P I just wanted to throw this out there in case there are other Bionicle fans here who would like to see this.

The white legends gives a cleaner look while the orange legends gives the keyset some personality to it...

I think that summarizes it very well.  I'm enjoying the personality more though both look good.

So, as silly as it might be, I've been thinking over these colors for a couple days (or at least when I swing by GH). The white legends do look very clean, and I feel the white is still thematically on-point as Unit 02 in the original series still has white on its face, and the Flash logo is classically rendered on a white circle. I'll concede the Iron Man tie would be a stretch. In terms of design, the white legends are an improvement on the orange as the contrast is better, so the legends are more easily readable. Since the orange and red are tonally similar, the legends get a little muddled in the sea of red.

THAT SAID, I do think it's also very important to keep the personality of the orange in the set. It sounds like doing all the mods orange might be too cheesy(har), but what about maybe just the bottom row mods, or maybe bottom row/shifts? I don't want to throw too many options out and make it harder, especially considering the time renders take. I'm in for this set any way you do it.

Another consideration for keeping some orange in the mix would be to have the number row use orange.  Something akin to the black number row keys for Skull Squadron.

Yep, the original plan was The Flash, Iron Man and Unit 02. I'll have to check what other novelties I can come up with, and then decide what to take out if pricing becomes an issue. :)

The white modifiers and orange text looks gorgeous. Definitely down for one if it comes out. Hoping for uniform SA, there's lots of sculpted SA and DSA but few sets in between.

I've already tried that, I checked and I've actually made a mockup with white legends months ago. The consensus is while white legends look cleaner, the set has more personality with orange legends.

Oh and obviously the case profile is hardly seen, it's just an idea and hardly original, maybe I'll try more otherworldly cases next-time. :)

Hi guys, just realized this topic has been dormant for more than a year. I know some people are waiting for Troubled Minds, but SP queue is too long and Massdrop doesn't really like to deal with niche of a niche products anymore that won't sell thousands (look at GMK SNES). This other set has just been given a new lease on life, and I'm currently working with people keen on having it produced. I have the latest mock-ups, and currently have 3 colorway options. I have my preference, but I'd like some community feedback too.

Tentative name I have for this set is "Berserk" and mainly a Unit 02 set. I'll probably be adding extra kits for The Flash and Iron Man novelties though.

Bright Red: 187C
Yellow: 7563C

There are "WIN" keys in the kit if that's what you mean, it will be one big kit and then extra novelties for The Flash and Iron Man... and yes the Esc novelty is kind of the signature cap for these "series" of sets, especially since it was developed here in geekhack.

Yes I know, not many sets were made (not too few either but you get it) and for those who want it they have to pay exorbitant prices which is sad.

Personally I like yellow on red, but whatever is closest thematically to Unit 02 is ideal. More red and a few dark purple and black keys would be nice as well.

The black keys fit the Seele novelty like in my older mock-ups, but I tried to keep it as simple as possible as this is already a loud set in terms of color.

I'm only in for option 1

Yes this will not be SP, this will be made by Maxkey. I know people have reservations, but I have two Maxkey sets and I must say their caps look a lot better than the SP caps I've seen. The legends need work, but they are already getting some keys fixed. Molds are expensive though so this will be a process that will take months, most likely faster than SP fixing their legends though. The first fixes should be available in a few months, just in time for this set.

Oh I see whoops, I'll be honest, I thought the use of the name "berserk" was literal rather than being a character in Evangelion, hence my initial comment. After googling for a bit you're right, the duller colours do fit - I'm still a much bigger fan of the brighter scheme but it's perfectly understandable if you rather go with the one that fits the actual theme you have in mind best!

It's mostly done but I'll look into this, since I have to finish the other novelties for the superheroes too.

I will be honest I am on the fence about MaxKeys, yes the production pictures are looking good for previous sets, but the legends do need work.  Definitely want to see updates to the work performed on the legends as your set is a definite buy.  I agree waiting on Signature Plastics to catch up is not likely to happen before this group buy starts, but definitely want the quality especially for a graphic artist like Thesiscamper that has done so much for the community in terms of excellent graphic renders.  Please do share any new updates you get as rushing this set ahead of quality corrections feels unnecessary to me.

I doubt all the corrections will be done before this set's production, but I'll ask them if they can do the F1 correction because that's the thing that kinda bothers me.

By the way guys, POLL IS UP. FYI the Pantone codes look a lot different in the guide than in my monitor, and I'll have to check it again from another source. 188C is definitely too dark in the swatch I checked.

F1 is the worst. I think they have molds for correct shift. Back space doesn't bother me much. I usually don't use it. The biggest benefit to SP though is the gross finish, which just makes the profile pop a lot more than the more matte finish on maxkeys. But the cost and time difference is a huge plus, assuming maxkeys isn't charging more and causing end prices to bump to $100 like a few recent buys. $80 is a lot nicer considering you can get amazing compatibility for $110 with gmk.

I mean, this is an SA set, which means it's going to be super glossy...a nice bright glossy Hellrot would go a long way towards both making a stunning set that stands out (the way Asuka is meant to)

This is a fantastic concept though... Asuka has been my wallpapers at work forever. The vibrancy of the red and green, plus her orange hair, is what brings me back to those wallpapers every single time. I can't help but feel it might do the same here.

That's how I voted too. The maroon just makes me think of football for some reason lol. I think the bright red is the only one that really works for me.

cant believe I havnt seen this before. Really liking the darker red color , voted option 1 because I was drawn to the yellow more, but until we see actual photos I think itll be very hard to tell how nice that yellow actually looks with the red.  Also I voted option 1 but it would be nice to still have the red on yellow accent keys that option 2 shows.

That's how I voted too. The maroon just makes me think of football for some reason lol. I think the bright red is the only one that really works for me.

cant believe I havnt seen this before. Really liking the darker red color , voted option 1 because I was drawn to the yellow more, but until we see actual photos I think itll be very hard to tell how nice that yellow actually looks with the red.  Also I voted option 1 but it would be nice to still have the red on yellow accent keys that option 2 shows.

Thank you for participating! I'll be updating the color codes but will keep the option the same (darker vs brighter red). Also yes, the plan is to do the yellow accents for Option 1 if people prefer it.

Here's an updated render. As I've said the Pantone codes look too different in person, and it's either the calibration of my monitor or the other render engine I use. I'm trying to make it look as close as possible to the front-running option (Option 1). The current Pantone code is 7622C.

Thank you for the support, Maxkey's novelties are apparently more cost effective by 10x1u, in that less than 10 novelties are the same price as 10. I had more 1u novelties initially, but with the current kit I'll need to add 8x1u novelties which I believe is too much already.

I'd like to see the "Enter" and " /| " key above it to both be offered in white. I can't be the only one who likes to have all the mod keys the same color so it's uniform on both sides mostly.

Thank you! Yellow alpha legends are more popular it seems, even in the small poll they did in China.

PSA: You can check the SA Lime thread (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=89839.msg2471224#msg2471224 (https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=89839.msg2471224#msg2471224)) to see which legends have been fixed, even SP took years to fix theirs and they wouldn't have fixed the "SHIF T" anyway without 7bit IIRC.

Molds are expensive, and since their target market is mainly China I guess ISO support isn't a priority. I will ask if they're considering to make it soon, or perhaps jchan knows more.

So this is how they make their caps. Their molds are for around 30 caps, and they grouped the alphas and modifiers. They did this to be cost-effective. If we're going to include that reverse color for |\ and ~` they'll be using a mold for 30 caps to make just two caps, and the rest will be a waste (the other alpha keys with inverted colors).

Man it sure is a shame that this had to be made with Maxkeys when SP is so much more flexible.

I would have loved to see this go absolutely crazy with purple, black, and orange keys and supporting every layout under the sun.

The accent keys are part of the novelty mold, which is like R1 1u, R3 2.25u, R3 1.25u and arrow keys lumped in one mold, so the waste here is much smaller than one of the bigger alpha/mod molds.

Yes I've considered these options. Personally, a year long wait (probably more) from SP is not acceptable so I've also considered GMK, and then Maxkey reached out but didn't want to do another "old" set so we went with this.

So this is with maxkeys?

It is, and I'll be putting that on the title to avoid further confusion

Do we already have a spot in their lineup? I know they already have some sets going but according to the Maxkeys Calm Depths thread due to mold fixes they are on hold for new sets until Oct 1st.

Calm depths apparently is running their buy Oct 1-14th, can we work on getting the next slot? Especially considering once the new molds are ready I imagine even more people will be comfortable bringing sets to them and then the queue is going to just get longer.

i think lime(? - i'm pretty sure one upcoming maxkeys set) is supposed to be glossy finish similar to sp's sa sets. do you happen to know what kind of finish maxkeys are expecting for this kit? (i might have missed this from before and i'm sorry if i'm being repetitive).

The yellow spacebars are included, I'm just on my phone so I haven't updated the first post yet. I prefer the matte finish of Maxkey's regular sets, and I didn't know glossy is an option now.

There is no exact date yet, I was only told end of August.

We have also decided to separate a few keys. I will post an updated kit mock-up soon.

I know this is a rather odd question to ask, but what is the likelihood of the GB being hosted on other platforms aside from MD?
Asking due to being in SEA, MD doesn't make anything cheaper especially regarding shipping outside of the states, which more or less nullifies the lowered price of the set.

Either way around, I'm still interested in getting one, so it wouldn't affect me too much... aside from having to pay more for shipping that is. :p

Not a huge fan of the mod as well. personally i prefer the black mod version

Sorry, but the molds have all been prepared, a little bit too quickly in all honesty since I was surprised by the speed Maxkey went about preparing them.

The current backspace novelty is the progressive knife the EVA's use. The Lance of Longinus is an ancient alien artifact made for god killing. I actually love this novelty idea because it plays a big role in End of Evangelion with Unit 02 but the kit is softlockdd and idk if thesiscamper can change it.

Are they producing it before the GB starts then running a fcfs type thing through them or are we actually going to get a GB for this? Kind of confused as to what you meant.
Initially I was told it was going to be produced first, now it's gb-style.

White has been changed, I realized WCK is too off-white. I asked for similar to SP's WFK for the white mod base, 187C for the red alphas base (should be similar to Ashen's accent) and 7549C for the yellow accents.

black red and white would have been fire.. That yellow though... I dont know if  I can be excited for this ..waiting to see final product. Just whish alphas would have been red and white option rather than red and yellow .

Are the key sizes/profiles ones that already exist for maxkeys? Like are there already keys in the right shape with the wrong legend.

Getting legends changed would conceivably be doable, but custom molds likely costs orders of magnitudes more than legend plates. Same reason there is no iso support. Wherever maxkeys got their molds, they didn't include an iso mold, so someone would have to actually get one made. Legend plates are just a small part of the mold, the expensive part is the rest of the mold, and that part would need to be created for any mold (for example if you wanted a R2 1.25u key, that would be a custom mold, same with an iso enter, etc etc etc). Anything that isn't already in the base kit would likely encounter this problem.

So as long as you just need 1 u keys, it's likely "doable", now if there is enough interest, who knows. The real issue is that's 15 new legends for a very small subset of people. I imagine moq would be hard or the price would be very high.

Yeah Amnesia you're right, it would just be legends for at least 15 different keys (14x 1u, 1x 2u - excluding any potential extras/novelties), so it shouldn't be a big hurdle for Maxkeys, but like you said it's more a question of interest. I've been considering lately posting another thread on r/mk alongside a strawpoll just to see if this would be worth pursuing for this set or any future Maxkeys sets. Of course as far as this specific set is concerned though all comes down to thesiscamper's personal interest, but I just wanted to throw the idea out there and get a bit of input. This would definitely be my #1 choice right now though for an SA ortho set.  :thumb:

EDIT: I was also going to mention that if the ortho mod kit doesn't happen for this set, I'd still probably end up buying it anyways and dealing with a few incorrect legends. Wouldn't be a huge dealbreaker for me personally but obviously having an accurate set would be really nice.

It doesn't really depend on me, but on what most people are willing to pay for. If I can have my way it will have kits to support most layouts, but we have to balance compatibility with price. I do hope Maxkey will be able to add these non-standard caps in the future, but at the moment it's just not viable, and I apologize. If this becomes successful I will try to discuss compatibility with them.
