From what I'm reading from the korean post at kbdlab, this would be easier for beginners right?
Would you recommend I start with something like this for my first build/ soldering job? I've no previous experience.

Absolutely.

SMD/diode presoldered means that all the really hard work is done for you. Saves you some 350 solder joints. Plus, GON's PCBs are really noob friendly anyway. They can stand up to a little bit of abuse.

As an added bonus, GON is always reachable on skype if you have questions while you're building. Check his subforum for more info. If you have questions about general soldering, check the massive soldering thread.

Great, sounds like the GON TKL is a great build for beginners.
I'm in for one! I've always wanted a GON and the limited edition is super appealing.
An acrylic case would make it a perfect budget build.

Thanks for the links, I will definitely need this when I get around to purchasing/ preparing for soldering.  I appreciate it.  ;D

Edit: Congrats GON for the award and recognition!

I'd love it if GON waited until mid/late January to do this. Not my decision, though.

I'm sure you can bundle the PCB with a case from his website and assembly services. The PCB will be available as an item on his site, I don't see a problem in making a full TKL  :thumb:

I'm afraid it doesn't fit Filco cases :( In the OP there is a list with the supported cases. It would have been nice to have that compatibility, but GON has really cool cases

Building a keyboard is easier than you think. Just time consuming, really. If you're really unsure of yourself, just pay someone else to build it for you.

Looks amazing but the flex on the board scares me  :-[

Oh that's the one from lastpilot. I though that was something else. Okay okay, that's really pretty. But the price is really steep though  :(
Thanks ! IS the flex really noticable tho ? It's real pretty. :(

Okay, just saw the pictures 0.o
that's really...... weird.  :-\

the two second albums are of the GON that i bought 2nd hand from the guy who took the pics. the flex is not noticeable.

Erg.. I am really debating on getting this.. I really don't like the TKL layout.. BUT I WANT TO SUPPORT GON. Also on an unrelated note. It is a blessing and a curse but GON told me that his CNC manufacturer is having trouble keeping up on his orders since they are so numerous. My order is now delayed by over a month..

Send me some lube then

You need one diode for each switch.

Do you have stabilizers?

Should I be using costar or cherry stabilizers? I know I can obtain costar stabs from WASD but I'm not sure about cherry stabs.

i thought the SMT diodes were already soldered on? am i incorrect?

The page says: "Controller SMD Parts, Diodes and Resistors Soldered and Firmware Flashed before shipping(LEDs should be soldered by the assembler)"

Seems like you're right. Diodes and resistors have already been soldered on, I guess since it's one of the features of this limited edition board. So the only step left would be to solder on switch LEDs if so desired, and assemble it into the case, right?
