This thread is supposed to pick up where this one (http://geekhack.org/showthread.php?14749-What-Band-are-you-Currently-Addicted-too) left off, this time without creative spelling in the title. ;)

I'll start with two for quadibloc, so expect something on the lighter side.

First there's a lady from the UK you might enjoy if you liked the Carpenters...

...and then we have a Dutch singer who does poppy swing jazz:


Staying in rather listenable yet fairly different territory, I finally got an album from this lady recently who likes to explore somewhat unusual connections among musical cultures:

It's nice to be remembered. There is so much beautiful music on YouTube - but it's still difficult to find something that I enjoy that can hold up its head in such august company.

Here's a jazz version of an almost forgotten melody that was a big hit in its day,


and here's another song that made it to the charts


I also came across this; as it was not a live performance, I hesitated to include it at first, but it's a lovely song, the first hit performance from a then-obscure songwriter who, many years later, became a well-known singer-songwriter with hits like "It's Too Late" and "I Feel the Earth Move"...


and so I thought that I really should work it in to the tapestry of my post.

The song was originally recorded by Bobby Vee, for whom Carole King wrote other songs, but it ended up as just an album track rather than a single. Here's a live performance of this song by a famous British singer:


who, in an odd parallel, recorded "It's My Party" as a mere album track before Lesley Gore made it her big breakthrough hit.

At 35,053 views, no doubt it is still not up there with Mr. Bieber, but it's not quite as atrocious.

EDIT: I looked at the Justin Bieber video cited in this thread, and found that it had over half a billion views. I have to wonder if that's not some kind of program bug; tens of millions, I expected; a sizable fraction of the global population, I did not.

@Ripster - I searched youtube for a better video (girl is haawt) and I think she's Jolin Tsai. If that's the case, she had a big sex scandal a few years back. Edison Chen (guy from Infernal Affairs, that's how I found out about this thing) had sex tapes from him with this girl, Maggie Q (fiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiine), and some other girls.

the vocals just killed it, nevertheless it was pretty good. The singer sounds like he was just infected with the T-Virus and he's angry that the local mcdonalds is not serving breakfast (obviously due to be being overrun with a zombie apocalypse).

I watched this on the Hungarian TV show "Csillag Születik" yesterday. It's a talent show, and very similar to the Britain's Got Talent.
I rarely ever listen music, but this guy is a freaking amazing musician playing on his accordion.

Ah, yes. Sharp's Touch Wood SH-08C. But I'm hardly surprised that such a thing is a commercial.

Ages ago, the TV happened to be on when a soap opera was featuring the wedding of some major characters. A performance of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring done on handbells was featured. I was impressed by it; the closest thing I could find to it is this performance by the Festival Handbell Ensemble from Korea:

No it wouldn't help... not at all. Listening to those made me swear loudly.

I can tolerate the occasional Baroque chorus (as long as I can't make out individual voices), but I still prefer to listen to instrumental music without any singing. I don't like to be reminded that there's a human making the music. I think of music as emotion and logic, not communication or expression.

I like "Space Music" too, but can't seem to find any good pieces. Here's an example that's OK, but it still doesn't quite do it for me.

Yours truly spent much of Easter remixing the last album of these guys (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=COkya7N3pB8) so I could have my very own "audiophile quality" version (which was successful, for the most part at least, but be warned it's not entirely trivial (http://stephan.win31.de/phoenix-remix-worklog.txt)). They'd put up a high bitrate MP3 multitrack version for remix purposes last year, which I found out while going through the CD stacks and adding data for over 100 discs (phew) to the DR database (http://www.dr.loudness-war.info/) (the Foobar2000 DR meter plugin works reasonably well, except logs in "album mode" seem incompatible).

Other than that, it seems I've been infected by the folk virus.

One of the previously neglected discs that I stumbled upon in the vault contained this nice cover of a Cohen classic:

Another one of those who were taken far too young... :(

Here's a classic that I hadn't heard in ages, even totally forgotten about, only for it to come back to mind and me finding that I could still sing it and even remember a significant portion of the lyrics (and I'm not exactly a music library on legs). Guess it made a bit of an impression on me back at 13.

I like songs that shine with nothing more than a voice and a guitar. Guess that's why I'm a fan of Suzanne Vega, among others. Speaking of whom, here's one of my absolute favorites of hers, admittedly with slightly fancier instrumentation.

Well, yeah, emotion can be "communicated" (transmitted from one to another through music), but I meant I don't like music being communication as in verbal communication - of thoughts, stories, whining about cheating lovers or bragging about busting a cap in somebody's ass. I don't like words forced on my thoughts. I like to keep my own thoughts in my head and use music to adjust my emotion and improve my logical thought process and memory.

That "Albinoni" piece you posted is actually not by Albinoni. It's a fake - written by Remo Giazotto in 1958 and passed off as an Albinoni piece. There are some great real Albinoni pieces though, my favourites being Op. 9 #3 2nd Movement, #4 2nd Movement and #6 2nd Movement (I Musici, Heinz Holliger version). I can't find that version on Youtube or I'd link it.

Actually, I do feel bad about Dresden. Who wouldn't? I read that the entire output of some composers was destroyed. We don't even know what their music sounds like. (...but then again, maybe it was ****... who knows?)

I often wonder how many amazing things - music, art, scientific discoveries, inventions - were lost throughout history because of stupid wars. The stuff we know about today is just what survived. I'm sure there were many incredibly great things that we know nothing about today - don't even suspect existed - because they were destroyed long ago.

A lot of things were, no doubt, lost because of wars. Perhaps more, though, was lost because it never existed - because the people who would have produced these things, from Archimedes to Saki to... Jura Soyfer, to take just one random example, were killed in war.

On the other hand, it does also seem that a lot of scientific advances took place much more quickly because of wars - because nations invest more in research when their survival is threatened, and because some regimes suppress innovation to maintain stability and protect their rule - but regimes are less likely to do that when the threat of war with innovating neighbors means they can't get away with that.

War is a symptom, and it's the underlying problem that causes it that we need to fix.

I'm afraid I'm not expert enough to recognize it.

And here's a Greek version of a famous popular song... yet the title in Greek doesn't have the word "fengari" in it anywhere.

A lot of my friends like dubstep too so I can't avoid hearing that every so often although I'm not personally that into it unless I really just want to crank it up and blast something as loud as possible. Well the PC version is exactly the same as the console version. It even says "Don't turn off the console" on the save screen. It's definitely worth a play through.

The PS3 version comes with a free Steam download for PC.  It's a great game, and the co-op mode is really fun too, with the most challenging puzzles.  If your kid didn't do co-op yet you guys should run through it.  There is split screen or you can do cross-platform play between PC and PS3.

Yes, Howard Shore is good. I've liked his music since Dead Ringers.


It's a pity that most of the best movie composers (Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Maurice Jarre & others) are dead. It's disturbing that many movies these days just have soundtracks filled with popular songs instead of having a dedicated composer. In my opinion, there should never be singing in background music.

Edit: The soundtrack for Gattaca (by Michael Nyman) is another great one.

This particular live version from '96 features PG plus Natalie Merchant and REM's Michael Stipe - that's what I call a lineup.

Red Rain was originally published on the 1986 album So, arguably Peter Gabriel's most well-known effort. I can't say it has me entirely convinced though, too inconsistent for my taste and hasn't aged too well. Hence, I don't listen to it very often, and if so, it's usually just a few select tracks. By contrast, the preceding Peter Gabriel 4 / "Security" easily ranks in my top 5 albums of all time.

Here's a brand new track, only posted yesterday:
(The mentioned associations of Ray Of Light-era Madonna and Tears For Fears' Mad World certainly aren't too far off, and I'd also throw in the inevitable pinch of Sensual World-era Kate Bush. I can't for my life remember which other video had a sped-up hair cutting scene in it though, must have been something from the '90s if memory serves. Anyway, the low-light abilities of the camera used here plus shallow DOF suggest either a DSLR or a pro-level HD camera with a fast lens.)

Plus new albums from St. Vincent and Laura Marling on the horizon. *yay* I don't know about you, but there is plenty for me to be excited about this year (after a strong 2009 and reasonably good 2010). Naturally, I'm broke right now. ;-/

They may a ploy out of their silly appearance (fake beards, etc.). A lot of their stuff sounds much like '90s european demo scene music or techno. Much has lyrics in Swedish, but much is available in instrumental versions also.

It was created by the group "Sigur Ros" together with Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, who is the allsherjargođi of the Ásatrúarfélagiđ in Iceland (the chief gođi, the leader of the Icelandic Ásatrú association). And with me being Ásatrú this somehow connects me to the gods. (I'm serious about this)

Some cool stuff posted here lately. Easy listening with electric sitar, 8-bit tunes, what's not to like?

Recently I found out that UK-based folkie / singer-songwriter Emmy the Great has a new album out, too. Here's a song that evokes a bit of Suzanne Vega, which isn't a bad thing.


Other than that I found some tracks posted from Danielle Dax' elusive 1983 album Pop-Eyes (pretty much only to be obtained via certain shady sources on the intertubes these days), which is a fairly nice experimental post-punk affair if you're into that sort of thing. Here's one of my favourites:

Reminds me of M.I.A.'s "Bucky Done Gun" in a way.

If you like experimental artists with highly varied (and usually listenable) output such as Ms. Dax, check out this young lady from Canada:

...who, incidentally, is reported to have no formal training in music whatsoever (but seems to be doing fine anyway). She opened for Swedish indie-pop singer Lykke Li at some point.

While we're in Canada, here's one of this year's definite hits for me:

a record featuring the singing of two children that, for some reason, is an extremely rare and valuable collectors' item.

Now then: Nichelle Nichols (Lieutenant Uhura from Star Trek) sang with Lionel Hampton and Duke Ellington before becoming an actress. There are records of her singing after she became known through Star Trek. But was her voice ever captured on vinyl or shellac before then?

I figure such records would be collectors' items now if they exit - and they should exist, since most of Lionel Hampton's career and Duke Ellington's career involved them being active recording artists... unless she only sang for them on the road and not in the studio. Any insane record collectors here that know about this? Web searches that I tried before turned up zilch...

I always love listening to music like that for some reason. I think it all came about from Fallout 3. Probably my favourite game of all time and the hundreds of hours I clocked on it with the radio going must have grown on me. Now I always think of the game when I hear anything like that though. :P

Yes the newer dubstep tracks are horrific and I to enjoy the older more grime influenced tracks over them, but that doesn't mean that the 'new wave' of dubstep isn't actually dubstep.

Wait a microsecond... the description for that one says "This particuliar mix was released on Sire Records in 1988 and remixed by Emilio Pasquez aka Pascal Gabriel." Could that be the same Pascal Gabriel who also worked on the debuts of Ladyhawke and Marina and the Diamonds? That would explain a lot. On the latter, I couldn't shake the feeling that whoever came up with the arrangements loved his Alice (Italian singer) records... as does yours truly.

If you haven't heard of UK beatboxer, musician, DJ and all-round entertainer Beardyman, check out one of his live shows here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pnl1R2dUiD0&feature=relmfu). The guy's a LEGEND and apparently keeps getting better. Some sort of experience with the range of musical styles he covers may be useful but isn't all that crucial either.
EDIT: Seems like Reggie Watts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kgsBgwJQGnE) pioneered that sort of entertainment. Anyway... Crazy talented chaps, these guys.

Thanks for these -- I didn't even know there was such a thing as J-ska.  I haven't really followed ska since high school, though I still listen to my old favorites.  As usual the Japanese excel at what they adopt.  I've been digging into TSPO and Ore Ska Band on YouTube and loving them.  Doesn't look like I can buy them on Amazon though..?

Yup.  Reminds me of the other two Japanese acts that I like, Cornelius and Sour.  Although Cornelius is pretty accessible in the US.

O you cant forget unscandal if you like ska have you ever seen the opening for Scramble?

Some other bands I really like are The Pillows, Beat Crusaders, Boom Boom Satellites, Move, Peelander Z, Polysics, Sparta Locals, and Tsushimamire. O and my latest favorite 9mm Parabellum Bullet. I have been listen to all of them for a fairly long time, enough to see some of them in concert in the US and see other break up before I could see them. But last year I started branching out more and listening to just about anything that anyone else suggested and thats how I found many new styles that I really enjoy.

I've bought a ****tonne of music recently. Most notably: the new Mark Lanegan Band album, Blues Funeral. Absolutely loving that.

I agree, I was surprised he was in the song the first time I heard it due to Cudi who tend to make more deep and personnal music compared to the more flashy and commercial style of Kanye.

At the moment I'm listening to the leaked version of the new Mars Volta album.
I never gave their old stuff a lot of attention, I kind of listened to it once, and thought it was a bit weird, and left it at that.
I'm really glad I bothered to download this one, its f**king amazing.

Oh, and I've been going through a number of KEXP live sessions on YT lately. They've had an awful lot of good bands in the studio, that's for sure (not to mention good-quality videos, apparently shot with DSLRs these days).
Funny how great music seems to be a domain of non-commercial radio stations of all kinds (college / university, public, state-funded) - looks like they're just about the only ones that really care. The only exception I can think of right now would be Absolute Radio in the UK, which still is relatively new, so we'll see how that goes in the long term. I guess the problem is that the average commercial station will be shooting for the lowest common denominator in order to maximise advertising profits (or, worse yet, just to get the bills paid at all). That obviously doesn't mix with art particularly well. Seems to be sort of a universal law, with few exceptions.

I listen to pretty much anything from classic rock to modern rock to electronic. The only type of music I can't stand is slow music with a light beat...I feel like falling asleep. Sail by Awolnation is about as slow as I'll go and even then it has to be on full blast cause of the bass...

q102, 93.3 mmr rocks.  
I was happy to hear some older songs on the radio, listened to Miami by will smith.... Good times.
