Noko's Leatherworks - New Orders On Hold
« on: Sun, 01 December 2013, 16:24:10 »
    Noko's Leatherworks

    News

    - New colours: dark grey (leather), royal blue (stitching)
    - Have a purple Clack?  Let's trade :)

    Hello everyone,

I've been perfecting my prototype wrist rests, and I'm finally happy enough with my technique to start making more of them.

Some premade wrist rests are available on my website at:
    www.noko.ca

Check out the FAQ for more detailed information.

    Basic Information

    • Each wrist rest is handmade out of the highest quality materials; I use only top grade, American-made veg tan leather from Wickett and Craig.
    • Wrist rests are built with a wood and metal core and padded with felt, which is breathable and won't compress over time like foam.
    • Current sizes are Mouse, 60%, 75%/FC660, TKL, full size, and ErgoDox (tall for classic case, or regular for full hand case are both available.)

    Custom Orders

    • I'm happy to take custom orders!  Please check the custom order FAQ for more information about options and fill out my Custom Order Form.  I am also happy to communicate via PM.
    • For carving and tooling, I can work with an image you provide or find something that will work based on what you are looking for.
    • Leatherworking takes a while (so many steps that have to set for 24 hours..).  I want to make sure everyone is happy with their final product, so I will maintain a waiting list for custom orders and may shut down new orders if necessary to make sure the wait period is not too long.

    Colour Options

It's hard to get accurate pictures of dye colours, but here are some images to give you an idea.
I often dilute dyes to get brighter/lighter shades, so feel free to ask any questions about possible dye colours.

Additional charts for leather can be found at:
Fiebing's (under Leather Dye and Professional Oil Dye)

    • Reasonable trades are welcome--please make me an offer :)

Hmm, not sure what you mean by angled.  Something like a right triangle for typing with a slightly-rotated keyboard?

Thanks :D  My favourite leather to work with for sure.

Could you post more examples of options?

I want to know how many color, dye, stitching, and size options I can choose from.

I can shoot in the dark and ask for something but I'd rather have a better idea first.

Haha, well, that makes a lot more sense.

If just the incline is the important thing, I include two different heights of optional stick-on feet so you could put them on one side only (actually, I'll test this out once I get home and see what it looks like).

If you wanted to make it like the Filco one, with that step-like bump, it could be done but it would require a fair amount of redesign--I'd certainly want to work on getting ErgoDox rests designed before moving on to something like that.

sorry, should've been more clear. yes, i mean a wrist rest that has an incline, so that it would match up with the incline of a keyboard. of course, i understand it would require a design rework, and don't expect to see it any time soon.

how about being able to specify the height of the rest? is that something you could offer?

For sure, that totally makes sense.  At the moment I am working on making premade rests that will give people a better idea of how different options look together.  I'm focusing on styles that would work well with existing keycap sets.  I have a "Dolch-style" (black with grey stitching) and "Sanctuary-style" (black with red stitching) at the assembly stage currently, and next on the list are some white/red combinations.

What does "antique hilightning" mean?  I don't know how that would change the appearance

It's a paste that goes on top of dyed, carved leather--you rub it in and then wipe off the excess carefully so that it stays in all the nooks and crannies to hilight them.
If you check out the image of the prototype ErgoDox rest above (with the skull) you can see what this looks like halfway through the process--I've used black highlighting paste to make the carving stand out from the background as well as marble and darken the overall appearance of the dyed leather.

I should probably add a bit of explanation to the FAQ on this!  Thanks for bringing it up.

Bunny was my tester for the ErgoDox prototype :)
Turns out I need to make them thicker to fit the ErgoDox case.

how about being able to specify the height of the rest? is that something you could offer?

Yup, this is something I'll be working on as part of my next ErgoDox prototype.

<snip> and next on the list are some white/red combinations.

Is that white/red combination as in white leather with red thread? I'd love a white wrist rest (or the idea of one anyway, it probably wouldn't be very practical) but didn't see that as one of the color options in the FAQ.

Unfortunately white leather dye looks horrible (in fact the brand I use stopped making it, it was so unpopular).  I'm going to make one with the lightest natural leather I can and red stitching, and a red-dyed one with white stitching.

Argh, winter arrived overnight and the humidity dropped.  Going to have to remake a couple of top pieces that I was working on.  Luckily, finals are over and I'm back to the workbench.

Wanted to show some pics of a Dolch TKL rest.  This one is already spoken for, but I'm making another.

These look properly nice, one question about the custom artwork... You can buy leather tiles that have a pasley type patern embossed into it, is that something you could do? More curious than anything else but really thinking about ordering a standard one too see how I like using a wrist rest

Sure, that sounds like something more traditional I could find a lot of patterns for.  Would you be able to link an image of something similar to what you'd like?

^^ dolch wrest needs cyan colored threads!

Can't get thread that colour from my supplier :(
I am totally doing orange thread with black though.

Okay, I want to order a wrist rest.

But, I want it to fit the HHKB Pro 2, which would mean only 11.5 " long.

As for color, I want a "classic" leather look.  The dark brown of your Dolch Prototype shown above looks pretty good.  And finally I was thinking of getting a small embossed unicorn in one of the corners, if possible.  I would just use my avatar for the pattern of the unicorn.  Nothing too big, just something subtle to set my wrist rest apart from others.  You can use any other unicorn pattern if you want, I guess.  Or just the head would be good enough, if that makes it easier to make it small.

Can you let me know if this is possible?  Also let me know what "classic" leather options you have.  I know "classic" leather is completely vague.  But I mean like classic vintage saddle leather.  As for stitching, I don't know if dark stitching or a contrasting light stitching would look better.  I guess I would say just use what looks best, based upon what appeals to your expert eye.

It depends on the size of the rest and the pattern.  For a TKL fully carved, I would say $150-$175.  If you wanted a smaller carving (like a corner motif), then I would say $125-ish.
I've updated the first post with a little extra info about the base costs for each size.

Sure, it should be doable to take half an inch off.  The Dolch picture is actually black (my poor point-and-shoot definitely needs an upgrade, my apologies).  However, if you're looking for a really dark near-black brown, I'd recommend Chocolate (Oil).

Another vintage look would be light saddle tan (oil). Here's a sample with natural leather on the left:

I've also just got some Golden Brown in, which is a little more "brown" than the saddle tan but has a similar classic look.  I haven't mixed it up yet, but if you're interested I can put together a swatch sample of each of these side-by-side to give you a better idea.

Most people find contrasting stitching looks better, so I would probably steer you in that direction.  For the traditional look, I would go with black edges and either black or white thread.

Looks like I can get Lilac and Raspberry, both of which are pretty purple. (I updated the main post with a link to the thread vendor I use if you'd like to take a look).

And.. looking again, I see there is cyan thread now available!
Maybe I will be able to make the ultimate Dolch model

I made this wrist rest just before the holidays--it was the first full size I made with the new mould.  I had never tried using latex mask to colour with multiple dyes, either--but it turned out great.  I also learned just how long I need to leave leather clamped down to dry fully--almost a week is best.

Since it's a prototype, I wouldn't feel right selling it for full price.  I've put it up for 50% off :)

As well, for eth0s, here's a sample of the dye colours I mentioned yesterday (plus some fresh snow for comparison).  On the left are one-two coat applications, and on the right I've saturated the leather for full colour.  You can see how dark the chocolate looks when it's at full strength.  Although it does look like black to the camera, in person it's more clearly a very dark brown.

Looks totally doable (I'd want to make it the full height of the rest though, to incorporate more of the detail).
I'll try out a test carving for you and see how it goes.

This wrist rest is literally to die for  :thumb: .  Please say you will be doing more of them in the future especially TKL sizes.

Out of interest what type of glue are you using for the bonding of the top part of the rest to the bottom part?
