New to Geekhack, not new to mechs
« on: Sun, 08 February 2015, 14:10:13 »
Hi all,

Customary first post and all of that. I've been slowly amassing a small collection of mechanical keyboards. As per my signature, I started with a Ducky Shine 3 TKL, then got a Ducky Shine 3 Tuhaojin (both with brown switches). I then found Massdrop and got myself a Poker II (with blue switches), and a few keycap sets for the Duckies. Over the Christmas break I bolt modded a 1990 Model M. I've got a Matias Laptop Pro and a Leopold FC660M (with clear switches) on the way. On the wish list is a HHKB.

All in all, I'm enjoying my new hobby. I've enjoyed the community feel I've found elsewhere, and look forward to becoming a productive member of geekhack.

Cheers,
wholphin

Welcome to Geekhack!

Nice variety - have you got a favourite out of the keyboards you have tried so far?
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

In terms of favourite, it's a toss up between the Model M and the Poker II. Looking forward to trying clears though.

Welcome, fellow newbie! I'd love to hear about your Model M mod. Where did you find the board to begin with, and what did you do to improve it?

Hey! I'll gladly tell tale of my Model M mod. I'm lucky/unlucky enough to live in New Zealand, so I found it a bit of a waiting game to find a Model M for sale on Trademe, our local equivalent of Ebay. I managed to find a great example, and after a week of furious bidding, got it for $95NZD.

The bolt mod itself was a bit tricky, as I found it impossible to find the requisite nuts, washers and bolts in any of my local hardware stores. With Christmas rapidly approaching, I didn't want to wait until after the break to start on the project, and was lucky enough to find what I needed at a specialist fastener shop. Once I had everything I needed, it was a fairly simple process.

Overall, I managed to get a very nice example of a grey label Model M, and only had to do the bolt mod. There was a bit of minor cleaning required of the keys, and of the membranes.

Ha that's hilarious! No way did we get free high speed internet, and in no way did the government go bankrupt providing it to everyone. The government made a high speed internet rollout a key policy a couple of elections ago though (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_in_New_Zealand#Government_broadband_upgrade_plan).

A nice couple of keyboards there - opposite ends of the spectrum in size though :))
