[IC] Yatagarasu - WKL 60%

---

Background:

I've been a very big fan of the WKL 60% layout since I saw xondat do it for the first X60 run. I definitely thought it was weird at first but after using an MX HHKB board I realized they're more or less the same, just with slightly different blocker situations. I think with the popularity of the X60, combined with the success of the E6-V2 and its WKL version, followed by the QXP, and now with KBDFans' budget Tofu option, we're entering the golden era of WKL 60%.

If you know me you know I'm a huge Japan buff and the mythology and folklore is not excluded -- my 78-key layout (only teased in Discord :p) design draws its name from the sword passed down from the gods to the imperial family, Kusanagi. In a similar sense this board draws its name from the mythological three-legged raven that symbolizes divine intervention.

Please keep in mind that this is a very early design and I am seeking out community feedback and constructive criticism (as well as find out what board I unintentionally copied)!

---

Thanks for checking this out and I hope you like it.

I like the concept and the weight design - we are definitely entering a period of high popularity for winkeyless 60% layouts. Good to see it'd support standard PCBs as well. What, other than aesthetic considerations, would you say is novel about this design? Any unique materials/setups for plates (carbon fiber, polycarb half plate? alu half plate?, FR-4, etc)?

More in terms of the aesthetics, is it possible that we could expect a design with different sides (non-wedge)?

Maybe a fixed plate option, I really don't care for the large enter cutouts...

Honestly there's nothing extremely unique about this board at all in its current state -- that being said, I do prefer my keyboards to have some form of handle on the sides (a la CLS or Singa), so you can probably expect something along those lines. As far as plate options go I'm pretty interested in trying out some new stuff so I'm quite open to all sorts of suggestions!

+1 for fixed ANSI (WKL, option for split right shift, option for split backspace, option for stepped vs regular Caps Lock position)

I do prefer my keyboards to have some form of handle on the sides (a la CLS or Singa), so you can probably expect something along those lines.

Me too. I'd prefer to see something different from a wedge to break from the trend (hard to call anything a "trend" though since there's interest checks for custom keyboards every other week nowadays...)

As far as plate options go I'm pretty interested in trying out some new stuff so I'm quite open to all sorts of suggestions!

I'd be interested in softer materials and polymers. Brass and stainless steel have been go-tos when I prefer denser materials, but I want to now explore the other end of the spectrum. Aside from aesthetics, I really want to see designs that push differences in type-feel even if it's a bit of an experimental endeavor.

I think the design might be a bit too plain and does not make the board really stand out from the rest of the crew. Right now I feel like this is just a premium tofu more or less. Would love to see a more sophisticated design.

Really like the wkl 60.  Was going to buy a tofu but I figured more of these would show up sooner or later.  For side cuts, my favorite is the TX60/tx65design, so I’m hoping you’ll give that some thought. Could do something like ecoated zinc for case and plate?

Interested in that 78key layout more so because of the backstory. Would someone be able to share that? Interested in the weight design of that one. Really digging this raven too

This looks clean, I like the extra beefy arm Trogdor look that the third leg of the raven gives.

Heyo, here's a small update to the design -- an idea for the sides:

Also something something fixed ISO plate...

---

You might also notice the weight is no longer there...I got some suggestions from the Discord folks that this would either be impossible to machine or make the board very expensive. Back to the drawing board for that one.

Couldn’t you do a polygon like an isosceles trapezoid with the original weight engraved on it?

I'm sorry, I liked it too but some things are just not feasible outside of CAD.

I'm working on something like this!

WKL feels retro to me, and so does thick bezels. What's the possibility of adding a larger bezel up top?

This looks very interesting. The fixed plate(s) is a good idea.

Also, a simple weight design is preferred over no weight for me at least.

Any chance for a poly case as an option? I love the poly case plus brass weight/plate look. I'm basically looking for a poly Singa but in 60% form lol.  Your design would be perfect for it! :D

I'll see what I can do, I quite like the smaller bezels.

Honestly, there's pretty much zero chance of this happening in polycarbonate -- the complexities dealt with in the poly 910, poly Singa, and MX-SS are enough to guarantee that.

I love WKL 60% but I am getting tired of two and three part cases where the anode isn't a perfect match between top and bottom and they don't sit perfectly flush. Ideally if I were to pick up another one it would be one part with a tray mount PCB or use a bottom plate rather than top and bottom cases

I haven't run into the issue of top/bottom pieces being different color on any of my purchased boards but I have seen it happen and will keep that in mind. As far as things not being flush, the most I can do about that is make sure my CAD doesn't have any weird extra faces, the rest is in the hands of the actual manufacturer (and then mine for QC).

I don't really care for tray mount as the feeling is quite bad -- at the point you might as well just design the pcb to be its own mount but then we're getting away from standard PCB usage.

Bezel is 6mm.

Correct.

Edit:

Just so it doesn't seem like I'm being dismissive -- having additional permutations of the board makes things more complex than what I'd want to deal with. Plus I really prefer WKL to both HHKB and standard, so there's that.

Through weight more symmetrical now (it's close to the top bezel because that's where the case thickness necessary is):
