Oh, man! I love me a good beer. I wish I had seen this thread earlier than today! My family and I are throwing a large beer tasting tonight! We expect ~20 people and have a large fridge full of choices. If I can remember, I'll see about posting some pictures of our fallen victims!

You damn right. Europeans like to rip on America for our beer (yet they still love getting Miller/Coors/Bud imported and paying THAT extra fee). My mom worked with a couple from Germany. We had them over to drink one night and they were smashed after a few beers and kept saying "This American beer.. this is not what I expect!"

I am interested in this, but I live in a small apartment. I am worried my entire apartment, my clothes, and my two cats, would smell like yeast. Is this a valid concern?

I have in the past with a small brewing kit I got at a specialty store and yeah the wort and hops boil does smell a bit strong, but it goes away quickly after the boil. You could easily do it in a small apartment with no issues. Personally I loved the scent, and you might too. Just brew with the windows open, or if you have a deck you could do it out there.

All of Unibroue's stuff is fantastic. They're perfect as an after dinner dessert beer, IMO.

Not seeing enough German beers in this thread

I've tried beers all over the world, and no one does it better than the Germans. The Czech's also have some unbelievably good beers but I always come back to German beers.

Hey bro,

It is not about who does it better. It is about what are your likes.
Everyone has their own taste and tastes evolve over time.

Though I enjoy Franziskaner or Erdinger once in a while, my favorites are still IPA's.
Have you tried Belgian Beer - Tripel Karmeliet? You might like it.

Btw, nice bottle of Lagavulin there ...

Haha I know, it's all a matter of taste. Last year when I went to the US I found a lot of beers which I liked which I normally wouldn't like. That said, I still come back to German beers. I've tried Tripel Karmeliet and I like it, even though I don't normally like Belgian beers.

And thanks, that bottle of Lagavulin is in constant rotation. One glass a night for the past 3-4 years

Glad you like my local beer! Yea, Unibroue have some very nice beers and quite some diversity. My favorites are the "Blanche de Chambly" (means white from Chambly), a classic white beer with a lot of freshness. I also like the "Don de dieu" (means gift of god), stronger beer but it goes down so smooth!

Oh... my... gosh... Unibroue! At one point Unibroue Maudite was my favorite beer in the world, and considering I spent 13 years in the Pacific Northwest, you'll understand that I've done a lot of comparison testing. I used to buy Maudite and La Fin du Monde by the case, took it along to parties, and never had a bad beer from that firm.

Wikipedia says they're now owned by Sapporo. Hope they don't lose their unique taste qualities!

I don't get the fetishization of German beer. There are some good German beers, but, honestly, there are just as many amazing non-German beers. If you keep coming back to German beers, my stance is that you haven't delved deep enough into the realm of craft brews.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy Franziskaner Weissbier and a handful of other German beers, but I have yet to come across any German beers that are life altering.

You went to Seattle and didn't walk away with any Elysian Breweries stuff? That's like Seattle bread and butter after Mac and Jack's, Manny's (Georgetown), and maybe Hale's. Did you at least check out Big Time Brewery in the U-District, Hopvine in Capitol Hill, Brouwer's in Fremont, or The Pine Box in Capitol Hill?

People, including me, drool over them for a reason. Germany is famous for having incredible beer, and for good reason. Sure there are some micro breweries out there that make some good stuff, but they make it on a much smaller scale.

In the end, it all comes to ones own individual palette.

I agree with that last point, but I'd say that the whole "Germany has the best beer" myth sprang out of a time when the idea of beer in America was PBR and Budweiser. If you ask me, the idea of German beer supremacy is a myth. It's the same as the notion of French wine superiority. Perhaps it was true for a while (though I'd argue Belgian monks had been producing superior beer for longer), it's no longer something that really rings true. I still think you need to go out and experiment more before you claim German beers to be the best since there are so many great American, Canadian, and other beers from around the world. Of course, maybe the issue is that you're in Turkey and don't have the access to those beers that rival German beers.

I've been all over the world and all over the US, so I've tried a LOT of beer. I'm originally from Canada, and most mainstream Canadian beers are horrible.. at least to me. Like I said, it's mostly a matter of ones palette. I tried PBR for the first time last year in Portland, Maine and almost threw up. I have no idea why people buy that crap other than it being cheap, as Portland seems to have a lot of good beer on tap, like Allagash.

Some people will like Belgian beers but I'm not one of those people, I personally don't like fruits and stuff in my beer. For my own tastes, German and Czech beers still remain the best, especially in terms of overall quality.

Someone did buy some Elysian pumpkin beer. I had some, but I didn't really like it. And no, we didn't check out any of those. I was in Seattle for Pax Prime and I'm not that big of a beer drinker.

Ahh, that makes sense then. I've never liked their pumpkin beer, but they have some good stuff like Bifrost and The Immortal IPA. People also seem to like their jasmine IPA, though I hate it.

Bought some Elysian Superfuzz tonight because it sounded interesting and people recommended it. It tastes like disappointment. At least it was only $1 a bottle. I went in knowing Elysian is super hit or miss though.

Edit: It actually started growing on me a little. Still not awesome, but not horrible either.

Speaking of Czech beers... I had some free Starobrno at one of the GUADEC afterparties... long story short, it was awful. It's no surprise Starobrno is often called Starobahno ("old mud") and I imagine horse piss tastes like that. Considering I might move to Brno next year and most pubs have only that there, I might refrain from drinking beer at all.

The harm has been done.

Also, I am going to have to agree with Nubs on the German beers. I do enjoy a few of them, but having lived in San Diego for so long and seeing so many craft breweries pop up as well as some of the more established (Stone, Green Flash, Ballast Point), there is just so much good beer going on.

A Wednesday night at Stone (movie night) with a pint of Arrogant Bastard, a plate of Mac and Cheese, and SpaceBalls on the big screen is hard to beat.

The key thing about german beer is that EVERY beer here is brewed ONLY with hops, malt, yeast and water. If anything else is in the drink than its not beer anymore.
