KKB Miami Dawn

A new day arrives for a classic keycap set. KKB Miami Dawn is a rerun of Miami Dusk with improved kitting and availability. Manufactured using double shot ABS by Keykobo.

A collaboration with Hibi! The palm tree novelty on an anodised aluminium keycap with MG1 matched infill.

Colours:

Colours are simple, magenta and cyan on beige. Specifically MG1, TU2, U9 and L9. Keykobo claims to be capable of matching GMK colours 1:1.

Yep, blank winkeys are to match my two other favourite sets; the 2015 runs of RA and Olivetti

The 1u blanks are personally a dealbreaker for aesthetic reasons but at least it's intentional.

I'd suggest at least considering mod pipe/tilde, r3/r4 pg up/pg dn, and a second 2.25u shift.

Played around with accent keys, wasn't a huge fan. If you're after some Ankit is running WOB Essentials which includes CMYW anyway so I wouldn't want to step on his toes.

CP in place of L9 would be good in my mind, however main goal here was a rerun of the original set with improved kitting, if people would prefer CP in general I'm happy to look into it.

No mod pipe or tilde  :mad:

Front print is being considered, will continue to explore it. Original set offered it so might be worth doing so here too.

Not quite sure on when this will end up running at this stage, need to sort out vendors before I'll have any clue in that regard. Also don't want to rush it as I want to action feedback from the IC and will need some time to do that.

I think I'll be adding the 1u Supers in the end. I'm trying to decide between Super/Fn or Win 8 logo/Menu icon. I've added that to the IC as a question to gauge people's preferences for the time being.

Quite a major update, so here goes;

Manufacturer:

I was quite successful in finding vendors for majority of regions, however US proved to be difficult. Understandable a large majority of vendors are hesitant to take on GMK projects due to large backlogs of GMK sets that they're yet to receive, and as such would like to see these decrease before working with GMK more. For this reason I began exploring different options in terms of manufacturer/profile.

DCS was considered, I do quite like the profile, and the quality is a known factor. However Signature Plastic's timelines aren't really any better than GMK's at this stage, with many vendors experiencing similar queues. Two other options suggested were DCX and Keykobo. I decided to reach out to Keykobo for information and was offered a sample of an existing set they've run.

This sample arrived Monday and overall I was blown away by the quality, very much comparable to GMK's. These were the observations I reported to the vendors I have been working with:


Based on the other vendor's reactions to the quality, especially for the price, we have decided to go ahead with Keykobo to manufacture this set.

Kitting:

Due to this change in manufacturer it was decided that it would be best to merge the two kits into a single kit. Therefore the bars kit will no longer exist and will instead be included in the base kit.

I'm considering adding UK ISO as it's been heavily requested and won't affect pricing much at all really. This isn't quite decided yet however I will play around with the idea.

I will try to get permission from Cherry to include the Cherry novelty in this kit, however it remains to be seen if they will allow it. Fingers crossed.

I'm happy to announce that vendors are all locked in now, Mekibo is joining and as such the vendor list will be:

I’ve raised this with them and they’ve fixed this issue since the Geon run. It’s no longer an issue according to them. I’ve attached the photo he sent me of the fixed bars, he’ll also be sending me a 6u sample along with the colour samples I’ve requested.

Changing manufacturer to Keykobo is a great idea. Add me to the list of people that would love UK ISO. If Cherry logo is a no-no, then how about something else "Miami" like a palm tree or a flamingo?

Keykobo is providing me with samples for the following:

- Manufacturing capabilities (A different set in different colours showing the quality of their product)
- Colour matching (Colour chips showing that they match GMK 1:1)

As such I don't have a photo of a sample of the exact set from them. There are however photos of R1 from GMK in the original post, Dawn/R2 from Keykobo will be close to identical based on the samples being approved.

I've received colour samples for all the colours from Keykobo. Examined under multiple different colour temperatures they appear to be identical. Attached is a photo of the samples with stock GMK chips sitting on top.

Furthermore this sample shipment included some bars that were previously raised as problematic. The 6u bar they have provided me is the same size as GMK's offerings, the fixed 3u bar uses correct 3u stab placement.

Due to not being able to get a response from Cherry regarding their logo the novelty key has been swapped out with a palm tree.
