This set is a tribute to the Japanese National Football Team, a team that had a brief, yet fantastic participation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup,
displaying a great level of football. The Japanese squad almost made it to quarter-finals, but sadly lost against Belgium in the very last
minute of the extra time.

2.00U shifts often come paired with 1.00U ones and split spacebars. This might be negotiable, but I'd like to keep the base kit as small as I possibly can.
I don't have any plans to offer the base kit with icon mods, or an icon mods pack.

Nice colors, any chance the alternate esc and enter colors could match the japan flag novelty colorway?
I didn't like the white accents with red text, a darker blue looks much better.
I forget... GMK has a “Meta” mold, right? I much prefer meta to code, but that’s a nitpick. I like this.
Meta is usually used as a substitue for "menu". I prefer to use either "system" or "code".
Would prefer standard Latin alphas (or at least as a separate kit with them), but either way I'm interested.
A standalone alphas kit isn't going to happen.

I've only confirmed that Jamón will probaly drop in 2019 on Massdrop. For GMK Chocolatier, I've yet to prepare most of my stuff, create the project page, and get samples from GMK, but my intention would be to run the set through Novelkeys. So if we are strictly talking about my sets dropping: GMK Chocolatier, and later on GMK Jamón.
This set is in the IC stage, so it's far from getting scheduled. If there's a more than reasonable number of people that would want the set, I'll then bother vendors and propose the idea of having a GB, but we are very very far from that point.
Samurai blue makes me think of Date Masamune and Sengoku Basara - there should totally be a crescent moon helmet novelty!
I'll also consider that one too, but I don't plan to have more than the Japanese flag and probably the yattagarasu novelty Chokkan (stoic-lemon) has suggested.

Not only that. I'm also interested on having shorter production times for GMK sets, so more new designs can pop out.
Maybe a pipe key without the hiragana legend? That way you are able to use all mods with other sets if you wanna combine 2 sets.
The pipe key is not a mod, but an alpha key, right now what I'm thinking is about trimming slightly more the base kit and maybe adding some more layout coverage, but having a second pipe would be redudant for this set.

As I do not want to create any confussion, and this project has just started, I feel like it might be the right moment to change it, and avoid any future issues. Here are some proposals:
- Samurai Blues It's a very small change, but it would avoid people from swapping the order and saying "Blue Samurai". However, the change might not be enough for many people as it doesn't make a reference to the football aspect.
- Yatagarasu Soccer The three-legged crow and football. I've opted for soccer rather than football as that's how most people in Japan refer to the sport.
- Nishino Japan In reference to how Japanese media refer to the National team under the orders of Nishino
- Karappe or Karara Mascots of the national team

Before posting a major update for the set, I'd like to address that I've spotted some community members saying "Blue Samurai" instead of "Samurai Blue". "Samurai Blue" is a referrence to the nickname the Japanese national team has received, so that's why I decided to go for it.I vote for Nishino Japan.
As I do not want to create any confussion, and this project has just started, I feel like it might be the right moment to change it, and avoid any future issues. Here are some proposals:

I think we'll end up with just the Japanese flag ones, as they kind of fit best with the World Cup theme and are easily recognizable. The 3 legged crow might have worked for other set with white modifiers, but not for this one. So, back to just the flag novelties.

No, I'm not a particular fan of F-Row kits, it would require at least 12 new legends, a commercial license for that font, and it wouldn't be fair with those players that didn't have a number between 1-12.
I think people are being to unrealistic with what it can be and can't be done with keysets, specially with the small ones.

Do you think it could work if you invert the colors? Blue key with a white Yatagarasu (white on blue)? Or maybe a red (same as the Japanese flag) key with a blue Yatagarasu (blue on red)?

Indeed, the set goes extremely well with most dark cases: black, dark grey, or blue are an excellent fit for this White and grey powder coat could also work well with the set.

That's why we have the Japanese flag novelties. I'd want to keep the monochromatic feel that the core has, adding more red accents to the novelty kit would be too much.
In order for the 40's kit to support Preonic there needs to be an R1 1u Backspace. I have seen some GMK kits that provide one in the main kit (don't know if some other boards use a 1u Backspace), but you do not include it in the main kit or in the 40's kit.

That is an interesting perspective, it is your design and I respect your reasoning to include/exclude whichever keys you wish. I would say though that while no one could fault you for supporting the default layout of a board by including certain keys (even if they choose to map their boards in a different way), some critics could certainly take issue with you choosing NOT to support the default layout of a board while purporting to provide support for that board.
I would also point out that GMK Space Cadet, GMK Metaverse, and GMK Carbon R2 all seem to provide a 1u R1 Backspace in their base kits and I'm pretty sure it isn't to help out Preonic users. Is there another board for which that is useful? Is it something that sometimes shows up in the numpad of some boards, or alternate layouts for HHKB and similar sized boards?
It just feels right to me that if you say a kit provides support for Preonic then it should provide the keys to fit the default layout of the Preonic. That being said, lack of support for the default layout would not deter me from buying a keyset as long as I loved the colorway and as long as it had enough keys to provide coverage. If I got this keyset then I would just use Delete or some other key or novelty on the R1 of a Preonic, but Bob help any newbie who tried to use my board for the first time.

Z -> the "small tsu" つ is called sokuon and it represents doubling a consonant.
E -> い corresponds with vowel "i" and it can be combined with a previous hiragana to specify how to pronounce it. For instance, combined with ふ(fu) you obtain ふぃ (fi).
If we want to get a somehow accurate equivalent of the JIS standard with an ANSI layout, those sublegends are needed, which is what I have done previously with Serika.

The only way it makes sense to me is if you use delete more than backspace, which I believe very few people do.
Anyways, love this set, I'm in for whenever it drops. Also definitely in for the 40 board whenever that drops.

Even having to grab an expensive additional kit to get that look, it would make me more likely to buy into this set. The feelings on this are complicated and varied but should, of course, be left to the designer to decide.
The Self Defense Force was founded after WWII, as Japan technically no longer has an army, and they used the Rising Sun flag as it has always been linked with militar purposes. Since the Japanese football team has little to do with the army, and the negative connotations of this flag, I'm going to stay away from it.
Makes sense. I was just trying to clear up the whole rising sun=swastika bit, especially as this flag predates WWII and WWI by quite a bit. :thumb:

In all honesty, though the price is nice, I was disappointed that there were no accents in the base on Jamon. I don't really do novelties in most cases, but I love accents, so think that they should be included in the base of the set.

Is there any chance of doing the kits like you did with the Jamon kits? I really liked the accessibility of the Jamon kits, primarily for the splitting up of the base kit, and the 40's kit.
That's not really possible for smaller group buys, we'd need to have over 500 Core orders for this strategy to start to work well.

Joining 40s and split seems fine; I think decent number of smaller boards offer split spacebar options anyway, to increase the number of available keys.
That said, I had prepared myself for no 40s kit at all for Samurai Blue, so anything that we do potentially get would be an awesome bonus!
I'm someone who really loves accent enter and esc, and I'd really want them to be included in any 40s kit. I also think that the accented esc and enter belong in the core set, rather than being split off into a novelties kit. Hopefully for this and future kits (Nautilus Nightmares!) that is the case.
Out of interest, approximately how much do accent keys in the 40s kit increase the price by? (If you can say)

I don't have an exact number, but for a kit with a 100 MOQ, it could be $5, or $7. It depends on the size of the keys, and how many you include.

Blue Samurai is bad because there's already Red Samurai, which was designed by RedSuns. If anything, not using Samurai Blue / Blue Samurai could be a good thing do differentiate better both sets.

Bad idea. We would go from one trademark to another.
+1 for GMK Yatagarasu. IMHO, if this keycap is a tribute to Japan Football team, it's better to name it based on the symbol of JFA: Yatagarasu. It doesn't matter there is no raven keycap novelty or the name doesn't represent the color.
Although I suggested it a while back, when I came back with new proposals I discarded Yataragasu because it's a crow. Crows are black and this set is blue.

I'm not supposed to give my opinion about the choices I selected BUT, I'm inclined to go with either Victory Striker / 勝色ストライカー (Takai pointed out about KACHI-IRO, and its symbolism) or just GMK Striker / ストライカー. Both are still football related.
Striker is shorter, 勝色ストライカー is more specific.

Cost or not, it just doesn't sell. It's had it's opportunities. No point raising the base price for a few hundred people to benefit a handful.
Yeah the colorway isn't as popular as others, but the percentages are still the same. Less people buying the base of course means less buying ISO as there's less overall.

For the kits, I am good with the change. The only request I have is the alternative arrow keys from the novelties kit you took out. Would be great to see them on the core kit. And for the 40s kit, its good where it is. However, if you decide to make it like the Jamon 40s kit, then you've got to add an extra 2u bar to make it complete so it covers pretty much everything.

I know you have done tons of analysis on this (interest and cost and so so much debate) but does the hard objective participation numbers in Jamon ensure there will be a 40%/Split kit (the pictured kit) on future buys? I feel like this kit on Jamon is the best cost compromise for OLKB, Split, and 40% (*triggered ergodox/boardwalk users lol*). Some missing 1x blanks and a missing modifier color '" has been my only thing I have been critical of with previous kits (not just yours)--but it is what it is and luckily that is not a problem on Striker :D I know, I know, yet another comment about this to you.

I'm still hoping we go back to the old way of doing kits. Numpad within base.
I want to offer 40% support, and I don't want to have a second base kit to do so. This approach allows me to do that and the results I got with GMK Jamón were beyond my expectations. The outcome was good enough that other people are also using it for their sets.
Just like I did with Jamón, I want to test this approach with what in theory might be a smaller group buy. If the results are good, I might use it for future sets, otherwise I'd go back to the "standard" GMK set.

I personally will never buy a set that includes ISO again due to the wasted plastic used to manufacture those abominations some claim to so desperately "need". Think of the environment!

Did you see the Massdrop ReCap yesterday? There were ISO kits from sets that ran on there 3 years ago. The demand is very low for ISO kits and compatibility (proven by the low number of ISO-specific sets sold compared to total kits sold per buy). Based on your very simple remark about supply and demand, if the demand of the product is well below the threshold (MOQ), why supply it?

I'm an ISO UK user and I own GMK Solarized Dark, GMK Hyperfuse Origins, GMK Demonic (which I bought second hand bundled with the ISO kit), GMK Originative, GMK Laser. All of these bar Demonic have ISO compatibility in the base set and are all hugely popular, iconic sets. Custom keycap sets are niche, very low supply, unique (as in, not many alternatives for the desired colourway) products and as such a shift of 10-20 dollars is not going to influence their decision to purchase. It's not like buying beer or something where if the price goes up you can find something else cheaper that is almost identical - if the price of GMK Oblivion goes up 50% in the R2 drop, you bet your ass I will buy it because it's an incredible set and I've wanted it since I joined the hobby. People who buy these sets love the colourway and will buy regardless of the change in price. Factor in then the increased sales from ISO users and the set will be more popular generally. Keycap makers have no knowledge of economics and simply try to cater for their largest markets to build popularity.
Looking at ISO UK kit sales on Massdrop is not indicative of the issue because we do not use Massdrop here in the UK really because of ridiculous shipping times, import fees, and a multitude of other reasons. Anyway, rant over, I will join ePBT Kuro Shiro instead. Striker looks amazing, enjoy everyone.

well if has been mentioned by zambumon like two post above, and the render of the julls keyboard have a keyset that looks really close to serika color scheme with hiragana and mt3 profile.

Hey, are the prices for the Rama caps up yet?
The caps will be more or less the same as previous collabs with RAMA with the E-coated one will be slightly more expensive due to the finish.
Just for reference, I believe the pricing for the keycaps during the RAMA× Jamón drop was $40 for the bacon one and $44 for the egg one if I'm not mistaken.

I understand that mech keyboards are much more popular in America - most people in the UK have no idea this weird and wonderful community exists. It's a shame though that more and more keyset designers are opting to cut ISO support altogether as it sets a dangerous precedent that will be a barrier to entry to future keeb enthusiasts in Europe.
And I bet the number of core kits for Jamon in that picture would not have changed much if ISO was included in the base and the kit was $10-$15 more expensive. That small price difference will not significantly impact the demand for limited run (read: limited supply) items like aftermarket keysets.

You forgot an M in Massdrop.
There's not really much a difference in sales when you set up proxies in the EU for the sets versus running a keyset through Massdrop, and it is roughly around 4% to 8% of the sales. And yes, any price increase on a kit impacts not only its sales, but more importantly the sales of some of the child deals, likes 40s.
