Doubleshot(?) G80-11900 $100
« on: Fri, 14 August 2020, 05:57:19 »

I recently bought a Model F so I really don't have the money for this board, but the code begins with H so it should have doubleshot keycaps (I just learned recently that some 11900s have doubleshots which is pretty neat, but the F keys and upper navigation keys are R2(?) and the shift is 2u so they won't fit every board).

You tempt me, even if only to save the keyboard so that somebody doesn't just rip the caps off and scrap the rest. I know Cherry doesn't have a good reputation for boards, and I'm sure most of that is earned, but that's a cool board with an integrated trackpad. It always seems like a waste when people buy boards just to harvest caps.

Its predecessor, the G80-11800 (the boards are branded 'Compaq MX11800') have ~4 key rollover compared to the 2KRO of the Compaq Branded G80-1838 it replaced to live in server rack drawers.

I bought a new old stock 11900 from with 8/10 era windows keys and it had comparable 4KRO (which is totally useable), but used dual PS/2 and came with passive adaptors with serial and AT so the 11900 was still being sold recently and likely still in production.

There was a universal 11800/11900 PCB available on Taobao for a while that had NKRO even converted the trackball or trackpad to share a USB cable. I stupidly never ordered one and they had disappeared with a lot of other keyboard stuff on Taobao last time I checked.

I finally got caps for my weird 1800 case. I kind of wish I had the rackmountable sliders too, but I really just need to find a serial convertor so the ball can work over USB.

Those are pretty good. I got one for my son (a gamer) several years back and it served very well until I upgraded him to a TKL Filco.

That little track pad is particularly nice although it won't do fancy modern stuff like 2-finger swipes, etc, it is just a pointing device.

Yeah, Cherry boards are well engineered, especially compared to their (vintage) contemporaries. I found myself using the trackball on the 11800 daily when browsing, I can imagine the trackpad is better for modern resolutions.

What Cherry boards lack in weight they make up for in style. But I really hate the feel and durability of laser etched POM.

I just know their boards are usually considered to have pretty mediocre build quality for their retail cost.

We have stacks of old trackpads we pulled from parts laptops at work. Models that we've retired, so I have thought about bringing a few home to play with to see if I could wire them up to a standard USB cable. Then, if I converted one of my TG3 "cop" keyboards to bluetooth with that one adapter that also allows additional USB devices, I could plug the more modern multitouch trackpad into that as well, to replace the original one. That would net me pretty much the ultimate HTPC keyboard in my estimation.

Yes, this is called Cherry wob (Not GMK). It's got very nice keycaps.
I wouldn't pay this price because you can always just get GMK wob, and then you don't have to use the horrible scratchy switches, nor the horrible case with bad construction ~

They're cheaper on Taobao, but require a "Taobao agent" to purchase/ship outside of China.

Modern PCBs for the 11800/11900 are also available (built in converter for the trackball or touchpad too).

I have one of each on the way and will report if the PCB actually works when it (finally) arrives.
