Plate Manufacturing Methods + Places
« on: Sun, 16 August 2015, 03:44:53 »
Hi everyone

I was previously 3d-printing my plates with PLA, this results in a pretty unique typing experience, as they are 5mm but with nudges to allow switches to latch-on, they absorb sound pretty well, however, since I can't print them in one piece, I print them in 3 pieces, which results in very minor height differences between plates, the process is also extremely challenging, as I print into painter's tape so the texture is adopted onto the plate
> The process is extremely challenging, time consuming, sometimes several retries are needed to get a perfect plate piece, Shapeways etc. can't manufacture these plates as they are not within their limitations

Long story short, for my next keyboard/layout trial: http://www.keyboard-layout-editor.com/#/gists/56cebe0eff4d8931c305 - I'm going to go with a 1.5mm plate that I don't manufacture myself

1) I want a black anodised 1.5mm aluminium plate, I know that some people get it done by local CNC-shops, but I haven't seen any online services that does this

2) A 5mm stainless steel (or other metal) plate would also be perfect, to be used with switches that have their latchers clipped/removed
But I'm guessing it would be challenging to find a metal material that is available around 5mm: https://www.bigbluesaw.com/saw/faqs/information-about-materials/what-materials-does-big-blue-saw-offer.html
5.1mm/5.2mm would have been just perfect, so the switches press onto the plate for perfect alignment
