A rather old, rather beaten up Seiko Kenetic still runs though it needs a strap and new pins - but haveing broken six sets, I've given up on spring pins, so I'm drilling out the sides to permantly rivit in a couple of bits of steel rod... it's been on my desk about 4 years... poor thing.

My first watch.  Not been working on it for four years, it's been sitting there stairing at me with sad eyes for four years.  Problem is I'm so used to working with silver/gold that whenever I do anything with it, I snap bits like twigs for nothing but a few fractions of milimeters depth.

On the plus side once it's done I'll never be able to break it the same way again.  I might give it (yet!) another go tomorrow, have some lovely leather just waiting to make the strap.

My current day to day driver is a Skagen 803xltrb. Carbon fibre and titanium. An awesome thin piece and is surprisingly strong considering how dinky it is.

Also currently having my 1904 Waltham traveler restored. Brilliant pocket watch that I got for a song on Ebay.

I have many watches. Will try to post some pictures but some of them are this:

Nixon - The Time Teller

Nixon - The mellor

Wenger - Field Military

Carhartt - Military watch

My watches are exactly like the ones that appear on those photos.

I have also a gold Cyma I inherited from my grandfather. I think it's the best watch in terms of quality and brand I have.

If I had to chose one of the watches I pictured it would be "The Mellor" because it's my favorite.

Any of you is right handed and wear his watches on the right wrist? I hope I'm not the only one.

You may notice that I love military themed watches... :D

Currently don't have anything too nice. I do enjoy Nixons and Fossils for they're looks and price. Rolex and Corum are my favourite watches.

Question for everyone. What do you all prefer as the material of the wrist band?
Me? I like metal, such as steel. Don't care for leather, plastic or clothlike.

These are the two watches I have on my wishlist.

There's some nice watches in here.  I don't wear one, haven't for years - it throws my balance off when typing.
"Because keyboards are accessories to PC makers, they focus on minimizing the manufacturing costs. But that’s incorrect. It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

thanks yeah fossil are awesome as well, I think i like the mechanisms more then the faces on most watches lol. i guess i have my grandfather to blame for that he got me into watches as a kid and explained everything about them. when i was younger i never realised how crazy his collection was but now im older and i know the value and rarity of some of his pieces i know he has been collecting for a long time.

I was never able to think of affording anything similar until i was an adult and now i hope to someday have a collection as big as his when im that age lol.

the first watch i ever got was from his personal collection when i turned 16. was a vintage omega 1948

(not my photo)

still a few pieces he hasn't shown me in his collection, he likes to bring out a new one to show me each birthday its like a little tradition lol.

im sure he has a few more crazy rare gems up his sleeve to suprise me.

Anyway, I've decided on my 3rd watch for my collection, a 1963 Seagull Air Force recommended by Stonesturd on BT. It's a wonderfully priced mechanical watch and is an absolute beaut!

I'm confident it is. Quality control is a lot tighter than normally found on Russian and Chinese mechanical watches, and a 21 zuan (jewel :p) movement at that price point is brilliant. I can't wait to give it a try. I believe there are also a few different band colours that come with it, I know there's a black, which will look very sharp with it.

And yes, I'm definitely going for the display back case, it really is a lovely movement to show off. My only worry about the movement is the availability of parts. Despite being Chinese built, I have a feeling that the parts used aren't so generic. But I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Wow Rayuki, I know a little about watches and that PP is just insane, hoping to pick one up in the distant future.

I was looking at the Calatrava range but found the price to be a bit high for now and something I should be looking to buy a few years from now (around 30's)
I have 2 Tissots, a Titanium PR50 and an original Titanium T-Touch and also a Longines Sports Conquest for some reason...impulse buy a few years back.

Next watch to hunt down is currently the JLC master thin 39mm moonphase in rose gold.
another few months of savings and we'll be there hehe

As much as I like minimalist watches, there are a lot of times I need a chronograph, so I'm going to have to get one. And the seagull 1963 looks perfect as the face is still very minimal.

Heh, I'd forgotten all about this.  I'm about 90% done; I've drilled out the lugs to 1.5mm and countersunk the outsides - SS is a B**** to work with, I've made and seated two 1.5mm silver rivets - I'm a jeweller, metal of choice, I've cut and sewn the leather strap and sewn the watch to the strap.

I've still to make the clasp - a silver slider, so it's a two part friction clasp a 2mm ID tube with a .8mm slot cut down its length and opposite a .8mm rail soldered radially, and a 2mm round wire with a .8mm rail soldered radially...

I'll pop up some pictures when I'm done.

As a child I was wearing some digital Q&Q :-) After I have destroyed it in swimming pool (it should be water proof but sealing wasn't changed and there was probably some mistake after last battery change) I have no watches for several years; just using phone for time. Half year ago I "had to" choose watches for my birthday, so after very long choosing procedure I choose Traser Super Sport Chrono:

I think that for the price what they cost it's awesome watches :)

Nice thread!  ;D

Been addicted to watches for all my life, my last "area of interest" is outdoor watches...

Below are my newest additions to the collection:

Suunto Ambit

Garmin Fenix

Unfortunately I had to use some 'stock pictures' as I do not have either of them on my wrist right now...

My holy grail is however something completely different, a Rolex Submariner  :-X :

But first I have to check my money tree in the garden  :( Checked: again no "fruit" on the tree...

Picture as promised.

Sooner than it would have been thanks to Alessandro twisting my arm to get my camera out, take the EOS->MD lensed converter off my prime, put it onto the body, take the 1:1 extension tube off my macro and put it onto the converter.  Take the photo(s) and borrow my GF's laptop (400D doesn't play nicely with xubuntu) upload the image onto photubucket on a horribly slow connection that rejects the upload 4 times, then post here (back on my trusty little netbook...)

And after all that it won't load (or at least doesn't for me) so here's a direct link.

It's the Mk1 not right yet but a big step in the right direction; the vertical stitches over the pins that hold the watch to the strap - they'll be two rows of horizontal stitches next time, it'll be about 5-6mm wider - perhaps as much as 10mm - the clasp is built to take this into account i.e. it's wider than the strap at the moment, the circular cut out on the back (for the quite deep watch-back this has) I'll either cut after the watch is fixed in place - as it was slightly off-centre and now oval - or omit entirely, it may be black leather with electric blue or hot-rod red thread.

Final choice on leather is pending.

I have a Timex Weekender on right now I got as a gift, and a Lucien Piccard I bought a couple years ago back home. I also have a bunch of ****ty ones I bought in an eBay lot, and a Citizen quartz I need to get a band for. But I mostly wear the Timex now. I really like the brand. I want to get an Orient Bambino and a vintage Omega Seamaster at some point in the future though. But alas, I do not have $500 to blow right now.

I've been looking at getting an AB or ABC watch. I really like the Timex WS4, but it's huge and the graph for the alti is only every 1000 feet. Any other suggestions?
I think I might get a Casio sgw300. It's cheap, and has all the features I really want except the graphs.
I wish I had more money!

I love this watch as it has it all - lightweight titanium in black, solar powered, atomic sync with date, alarm, chrono, world-time, luminous hands all in a lovely analog display. (It also has tide levels but I don't use that)

Other watches that might be attractive to the custom-crowd here at Geekhack would be these guys where you can custom-spec your own Swiss watch http://www.121market.com/index.php?option=com_zoo&view=category&Itemid=81&lang=en (hit the customize men or women link on the right side of the page)

Nothing fancy, just a Tissot PRC100 I got as a Christmas gift some years ago.
12745-0

I don't really wear a watch that often, but after reading this thread I figured I'd start wearing it again. I'd forgotten how nice it is to not have to look at my phone for the time.
Though I do like watches, I'll often stop and look whenever I walk past a store displaying them, but I can't really be bothered to nerding watches because they're expensive and I don't use them all that much.

My Rolex is an older model. My grandfather has a thing for Rolex watches, I've never seen him without one. Even when he's just chillin' at home, in a wifebeater and shorts, he still rocks the Rolex. He gave my dad his first Rolex, it's been through a lot so some parts have been replaced already. My dad then gave it to me. Since I'm afraid of losing it or something, I only bring it out from time to time. It currently resides at my parents' house but it looks something like this:

But has this face (mine shows the date):

My grandpa's taste has since changed and the one he currently wears is all gold and decked out with diamonds hah. I'll take pics of it (mine, not grandpa's since he's in Taiwan) next time I visit.

As much as I like minimalist watches, there are a lot of times I need a chronograph, so I'm going to have to get one. And the seagull 1963 looks perfect as the face is still very minimal.

Just one warning about mechanical chronos: the cost of servicing can be unpleasantly high - and the recommended interval for a watch worn every day is usually about 4 years (although you certainly can get away with more.) Try to check what the typical service cost is for watch you choose - I've known some people who bought lower priced models that cost something like 50% of the cost of purchase to have serviced.

Well, the movement is a copy of a Venus 175. Yep, that one used in the mega expensive old Breitlings. :/

It's easy enough to get serviced but repairing may be a bit of a nightmare.

My favourite watch is the Seiko SKX007:

Usually on a B22 rubber strap like this:

Imo it's the best designed mechanical divers watch at any price -

- The mechanism has an effective 20 year service interval and is one of the best designed mechanicals at any price - see eg http://www.thepurists.com/watch/features/8ohms/7s26/

- The lume is outstanding

- It's ergnomically faultless - notice how the crown is placed low so that it less likely to stick in your wrist and the "venting" (those bends) in rubber strap so that it adjusts to fit your wrist better; the underside of the case is beveled too and there are no sharp edges

- You can buy spare hands, faces, gaskets, whole mechanisms at reasonable prices and they are easy to fit; it's one of the last mechanical watches designed as a tool instead of a status symbol

- It's notoriously tough - not as tough as a G-Shock but almost certainly tougher than almost any other mechanical watch; again, it's designed as a tool, so the glass is toughened borosillicate - not as scratch proof as sapphire, but a lot more impact resistant, the case is oversize to allow more shock absorb - even the springbars are a special oversize design

- Good production engineering and tool-not-prestige marketing mean that the price is insanely low for an ISO certified mechanical divers watch - say around $250 on the net, which is a lot less than the service on a Rolex

Downside: they come unadjusted from the factory with only 20 sec a day accuracy guaranteed. Most seem to "regulate" to chronometer accuracy (a good jeweller can do this for you while you wait) but then you'll have to start servicing more often.

Yeah - I think that's the one people have had problems with. As in it has been easy to find watchmakers who can service it, but they've charged what they would for the Breitling. Just something to check, maybe. (Precista do a very nice RAF replica chrono with that back and I was thinking of getting one of these a couple of years ago - but it might be a UK things, or things might have improved - but then I think the service cost was more like 75% of the cost of the watch even than 50%..)

I'm looking to get a new watch soon. Something business casual that can be worn with everything. Something that doesn't have yellow gold (metal or color). Would you suggest a Citizen Eco Drive or a Seiko over the other? Or something else? I have some watches, but they are Fossils and Guess watches. And as it stands, all of them are dead anyway...

BTW, I love that Rolex Submariner. Maybe one day.

I really recommend the Seiko that I posted above.  On a NATO or ZULU strap it is very casual and looks great.  With a jubilee or oyster bracelet it cleans up very well!  And that's just dust, not scratches on the crystal in the first pic.

I think I'd lean towards a quartz. I would never check the mechanical enough to remember to wind it, and then the moment I did want to look at it to check the time, it wouldn't be there...

Most mechanicals are automatic, or self winding. Hand winding is mostly seen in vintage or super high end watches anymore. I don't know why.

The Seiko 007 is an automatic movement that winds itself while you wear it.  You can't manually wind it.  If I don't wear it for a couple days it will stop, but a quick shake brings it back.  A bonus is that it will never need a battery replacement!

Crap, now I have to put more thought into this... Well, I would like to wear it every day, but I can't guarantee that I'll remember to. But I think if it lasts a couple days, that is reasonable. Do they retain time well enough?

About once a month I'll notice that my watch is lagging a minute or so.  Usually I don't care enough to fix it until it's 3-4 minutes off.  I guess if I needed to be that precise in my timing in life I'd get one of those nifty solar/atomic G-Shocks.  Now that I think about it, I kind of want one of those anyway....

Quartz is always going to be more accurate. Those Eco-drives should last at least ten years before you have to think about maintenance of the solar capacitor. Mechanicals drift more and need periodic cleaning and service too.

Both of the ones I posted are hand-winding and cost me $30 or less.

I have one too. In the UK its called MQ-24-7BLL but the US seems the same without the LL - MQ-24-7b (at least according to amazon). You also have the option of the 7e with no numbers on the face as well

My humble collection.  Top left is a Montres Allison Limited 2002 (real one - had them confirm it).  My favorite is in the bottom right - a 1952 Seiko Sport that my Dad got when he was in Vietnam.  It has the original crystal and band (although it is a bit worn), and the day and time are in Japanese  :D.   I really like Seiko as you can tell from my collection and have just the single Invicta in the center top as I thought it looked nice.

Ha, watches haven't done that in years. Have you ever looked at your watch to check the time, and look away, and realize you didn't even see what time it is? More often than not, it's easier to pull your phone out of your pocket. Or even more often, the dang thing is already in your hands!

I do the same thing with my cell phone.  "What time is it?" /look at phone without processing a single thing on the screen and put back in pocket "What time is it?"

But it's why I didn't buy a new watch when my last one broke, but there's something noble and sophisticated about watches to me.  I think we can agree that the craftsmanship of even a triple digit watch well outpaces a cell phone.  Cell phones = disposable.  Watches (especially the caliber we're talking)= heirlooms.

And that's the sole reason I would want a watch. Definitely not to tell the time.

Also, I'm not sure that I consider cell phones to be disposable. At least not until it's time for a new one. A cell phone is so much to me. I never use it to call people, ironically(?), but it's a computer in my hand that allows me to easily communicate with people, and that's what I use it for, all day. More often than not, I'm on my phone. When I'm at home, and you see me on this site, very rarely is it on an actual computer/laptop.

Huh, I usually wear a watch to tell the time when I'm out and about. I find it much easier to glance at my wrist to tell the time rather than getting my phone out of my pocket, especially if it's buried under one or more layers of clothing during winter.
I also don't have the non-processing issue often when I look at my watch, but the amount of times I've looked at my phone to check the time, don't actually process the information and then have to check again is baffling.

alessandro, do you really need a rolex?
(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

We could ask ourselves the same question about most things we buy.

Besides, it's not too expensive in comparison to other Rolex's, and it's being bought as a milestone birthday present/ last a lifetime piece.

Anyway, just be glad I'm not getting an iced out 18ct gold Daytona or DD President. ;)

As a person who has owned a Rolex and a Jaeger LeCoultre reverso for some time, I can honestly say that although they cost a lot of money (relative to my income at least) I haven't had a single day where I have regretted the purchases yet. In fact, I don't even think I can point towards one other thing that I've spent a similar amount of money on which gave me as much pleasure over time.  - Maybe my first car, since it held up forever without any maintenance, but that was a necessity purchase of an ugly beater car. Anyways, I digress..

Nice box! I'm looking for one like that. Where did you get it? What are those green dots? stone? LED? :p

It was actually a gift, so not sure.  The green dots are leds.  They are on when the winding is active.  the knobs change the direction of the winding (or turn it off).

Here is a nice basic one:  http://www.ebay.com/itm/TOP-QUALITY-QUAD-WATCH-WINDER-4-6-STORAGE-BOX-CASE-/330523173496?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4cf4b76278

Crap, now I have to put more thought into this... Well, I would like to wear it every day, but I can't guarantee that I'll remember to. But I think if it lasts a couple days, that is reasonable. Do they retain time well enough?

Get a Seiko Kinetic watch.  It has a pendulum that charges the battery. I sometimes go 2 weeks without wearing and it still keeps time

Maybe you guys can advise. I'm looking for an analog quartz watch, trying to cheap out on it big time. I don't want to pay for complications or anything. Slim, low-key, not necessarily formal but maybe something I could get away with in any given situation; i.e., no wannabe Epic Explorer gear. I'm really gunning for something that doesn't have numbers, like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-MQ24-1E-Black-Resin-Watch/dp/B000GAWSHM/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1381673679&sr=8-6&keywords=casio+analog+watch

But I also want luminous hands (not an active/on-demand light), and I can't seem to find both those and a numberless dial in the same watch.

I could just give up on the glowing bits and get the cheapo Casio. When do I catch myself in overwhelming darkness needing to know the time anyway? But of course, the very week I receive the watch such a situation will manifest.

I'm eyeballing the Timex Weekender but it would be the most I could spend, if that. I've done my scouring but maybe I've overlooked the perfect match. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

E: Found this, which is just this side of subdued enough, though I'm not keen on the thickness and rotating bezel:

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-MRW200H-1EV-Sport-Analog-Watch/dp/B005JVP0DC/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1381674241&sr=8-6

And

http://www.amazon.com/Casio-MTP1214A-8AV-Fashion-Casual-Analog/dp/B008UB4CMS/ref=sr_1_47?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1381674054&sr=1-47

I wonder if that uses the same pin system as usual. Could just get a decent nylon strap for it.  This might be what I'm looking for except I don't usually go for metal straps.

Now this last one is kind of sexy. It turns me on so much that I may be willing to ignore certain design elements, like numbers. I find numbers on a watch patronizing but that's a me problem. And I know what I said about complications but I do space out and forget what day it is. I just can't shake the feeling that I'm going to find the perfect thing too late.

http://www.amazon.com/CASIO-MW600F-1AV-10-Year-Battery-Sport/dp/B004AOEADA/ref=sr_1_45?s=watches&ie=UTF8&qid=1381675068&sr=1-45&keywords=casio+luminous
