IBM Beam Spring Revival Project
« on: Wed, 13 November 2013, 18:45:41 »
So I recently got an IBM Beam Spring 7362149 that I would like to bring into the modern era. I know it's going to be a lot of work to fix up completely but I think it will be a fun learning experience; I tend to do best in trial-by-fire situations.

I don't know how to solder.
I don't know anything about plastic body work.
I don't know much about the actual mechanics of the switch other than the basics.

I will:
- Repair the one or two keys that seem to have lost their luster
- Fix the two angled keys
- Convert the board to USB
- Restore/Touch up the body work
- Do my best to preserve the function key sticker

This is probably going to take me months but I think it will be worth the effort in the end.

So here is the board as it is now:
Overview

Layout

Serial, P/N, and connection

Sticker

Wonky keys

Bodywork to be addressed

I've seen some stuff about a new controller someone has designed. I'll likely result to making that. If anyone has some suggestions about how to go about the project, or has some information they'd like to share please do. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer.

Thanks for any and all comments in general.  :)

This might fit in better in the Making Stuff Together sub-forum.  Good luck though!

Fair point :P, seem to do this frequently.
