alright guys I need some suggestions for software for my 5 year old.  The system it will be going on is an older Dell Insperion laptop with XP on it.  I got it for free.

Are you thinking in terms of games? Check out gog.com, they should have a few kid-friendly games in there. Point and click games would be well suited for children, although I can't think of any that are easy enough at the moment.
Also check out Commander Keen, highly recommended.

Also, Paint and/or Photoshop. And maybe a tablet with a pen?
