Windows and various distributions of Linux.

Same here

I have windows on my main machine, because it's a shared computer and no one else wants to use linux. They also don't think that I'm able to setup a successful dual boot.

Other than that, my brother's laptop runs 'buntu(x or u)

I like the Apple laptops, mostly for the very nice trackpad and its gestures.  Although I ran Windows 7 on it as well when I had one.

Finder (windows explorer for mac) was terrible though. No up-one-level button, could only copy, not cut, files...

I run Ubuntu from a USB 2 stick some days, I like it more and more as most of what I do is within a Chrome browser anyways.

I think I'll be on Windows 7 for a while though, I really do like it.

I use Linux (Linux Mint 13 64-bit with KDE 4.11.1 desktop), Mac OS X (10.8.4), and Windows 7. They are all excellent all-around operating systems, and they each have specific strengths in certain areas. I use OS X most often; one of its useful features is its integration with unix. You can also easily move, copy, or delete files or directories using the GUI or the command line in OS X, just as you can do with Linux or Windows. One reason I use OS X and Linux more than Windows is that I like to have my home directory on a different physical drive from my other directories; this can be done in Windows, but I found it much easier to do in OS X or Linux.

I don't know whay anyone would use an old Windows system anywhere.
The time i "had" to use Windows was with DOS 4.01 (i think) and Windows 3.11. It was sometimes a pain. Memory issues were rampant.
This was the time many people switched from their homecomputers to the so called standard Windows.
One thing that was nice, was that there was a demo scene on Windows machines. Demos meaning artistic demonstrations of graphic and sound. One of the things that puzzled me that this was not happening on a Mac since this was an artistic machine.
Windows 98SE was good but i remember to see a lot of times BSOD. The first real version that was actually really good was XP and before that i assume 3.11.
Today one has only 3 choices which is either Windows, OSX or Linux. Since OSX requires you to buy a Mac the initial cost is a big barrier for many. This was always the case. Even the first iMac was not that cheap and you had to feel good about to have a actually small monitor.
I always thought that Windows came closer to, in my case, Amiga'ish feeling with a computer. Most software i knew ran on it. And most importantly, you were in control of the system and were able to customize your own hardware a thing that is not really possible with a Mac. Not sure today but in the early days you were able to switch maybe the graphicscard and/or the cpu or at least add another cpu on top of the old one with a board.
Linux on the other hand was great. Open system that gives you all the power you ever need. Problem for me was that not many games (i am a gamer) ran on linux or with either sacrifices or not at all.
And i am not that nerd that sits for days on the computer to figure it out.
That changed today somewhat especially that Steam is available on Linux.
Still, Linux lagged some programs like newsgroups software (i am done with that now) but at that time that was a bummer. There were only a handful available and these had not all the features you could get on Windows.
Not a biggie for others, for me it was. I felt that linux was catching up softwarewise at the time i used it. Today i still have the problem with my webcam which surprisingly doesn't work if i install for example ubuntu.

Anyway, i still think that using an outdated system is questionable. I did like MSDOS 5 but i am not sure if i could connect even to the internet with that. And i do plan to run at one point Windows 8. :) I know there are many critics out there but i don't care.

You can drag and drop files in Finder (OS X), but that involves having two windows open (one in the source folder and the other in the destination folder), and not overlaying.  This is made harder by not having an up-one-level button.  Or, you can copy the files, paste them in the new folder, then delete the originals; this writes duplicates to your HDD though, further fragmenting it.

And I have my Home folder on a second drive as well... I think it took a few minutes to set up, but less than 5 minutes for all of them, and that was only once I had to do it.  I spend a lot more time copying files ;)

Being able to install Ubuntu on a USB drive and run it no problem, even saving files and settings, is my favorite aspect of Linux (not mentioning its price).

I much prefer the mouse acceleration of windows vs mac, but the trackpad acceleration of mac is nicer.  I use and enjoy Windows, Mac, and Linux, and enjoy the benefits each have to offer.

You can drag and drop files in OS X Finder using only a single window if you like, although I find it handy simply to open two windows. You can also select whether to copy the file/folder or to move the file/folder. I usually use column view in Finder, which make it easy to use the file/folder options that I use most often. Regarding HDD fragmentation, since version 10.2, this tends not to happen to a significant degree. There is a good article on this: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1375

Like you, I use and enjoy all the major OSs, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. I do not worry about one of them being superior to the others; they are each tools with different ranges of applicability, and it is good to have a healthy attitude like yours to use each OS as it suits you.

I laugh when scammers go to the trouble of mocking up a Windows dialog box pretending that my computer is infected and I should click the pretty button to clean my computer.

On Windows it looks genuine.  On a Mac I just ignore it.

It’s in HHKB’s slogan, but when America’s cowboys were in the middle of a trip and their horse died, they would leave the horse there. But even if they were in the middle of a desert, they would take their saddle with them. The horse was a consumable good, but the saddle was an interface that their bodies had gotten used to. In the same vein, PCs are consumable goods, while keyboards are important interfaces." - Eiiti Wada

Like you, I use and enjoy all the major OSs, including Windows, Mac, and Linux. I do not worry about one of them being superior to the others; they are each tools with different ranges of applicability, and it is good to have a healthy attitude like yours to use each OS as it suits you.

If only more tech forum members see things as you do, there would be many more intelligent discussions rather than personal attacks.  :thumb:

Geekhack is generally quite good for this, from my experience.

I laugh when scammers go to the trouble of mocking up a Windows dialog box pretending that my computer is infected and I should click the pretty button to clean my computer.

On Windows it looks genuine.  On a Mac I just ignore it.

WHY WOULD YOU USE A MAC? THERE IS NO GOOD REASON TO USE A MAC, ESPECIALLY WITH MAC OS X. MACS ARE STUPID. GET WINDOWS 98!

If a mac was the only computer on earth that I could use, I'd use it just for long enough to put Arch on it.

have fun acquiring all the software you need to make a functional OS; that being the only computer, i'd hazard a guess that there are no more repositories left.

I end up using Linux, Windows, and sometimes OSX in any given day.  Personal favorite is Linux, but they all have their uses.

EXCEPT FOR MAC OSX. THE ONLY USE FOR THAT IS THE SOFTWARE CD'S MAKE GOOD DOORSTOPS.

Interesting Microsoft, didn't expect you to be tolerant of Linux...or is it just that you hate Apple so much more?

Because OS X just works.  It gets out of the way and lets me get on with my work.

I have to fight with Windows all the time.

I've more or less gone past the point of tinkering with an OS to get it working the way I like.  OS X already does that.  Windows does not.  Linux does not (most common GUIs on Linux need more tweaking than Windows btw).

Windows runs well on many Apple hardware.
