ePBT Kavala

GB October 1 - November 1, 2021
Kavala (pronounced Kah-vaa-lah) is a town in Greece, and my mom’s hometown. I was inspired by a beautiful picture of a sunset my uncle took while on a walk. ePBT Kavala is a pbt dyesub set that is designed to capture how the last sunlight of the day plays amongst the clouds, creating a mesmerizing gradient of color from the open sky to the horizon.

Final numbers have been posted (finally). Thank you to everyone who supported my passion project, either with your eyes, heart, or wallet. It has been an 8-month journey from inception to final result and it means a lot to me that so many of you were on part of this journey with me.

If you want to see future updates about Kavala, the best way is to join my Discord and add the Kavala Updates role. Otherwise, I expect to be updating this GB thread at the following times (along with anything major that's unexpected):
-Receiving samples
-Approving samples
-Finalizing SVGs (final files for manufacturing)

This set will enter production queue when colormatching is completed. I do not have an accurate timeline I feel comfortable signing my name onto at this time. When the set enters into actual production I will be able to give a more accurate timeline.

Update
Hello friends, I have good, bad, and really good news regarding the sample kit.

Bad news
The samples sent to me used 5-sided dyesub on the R3, R4, and R5 mods which affected the color on R3 and R5, which made the color unacceptable.

Good news
The dyesub legend color was good and the legends are clear. The blues are beautiful imo and the legend color is cohesive. While the R3 mods have legibility issues, I do believe that (a) that was always a reality with this design, and (b) using the color sample I approved originally will reduce this issue.

Really good news
I have spoken to kbdfans and epbt has agreed to use injection molding, NOT 5-SIDE DYESUB, for the entire set. I have approved the set for production, and we are officially in-queue for production.

Update

The picture above is taken in morning sunlight. My phone refused to show the colors even close to their accurate hue in indoor lighting.

After some back-and-forth with ePBT, they sent me injection molded samples of keys for R3, R4, and R5, pictured above with the previous blue keys from the full kit samples they sent me in the last update.

ePBT had to change the color of the legends on R3, R4, and R5 in order to have the dyesub work on the injection molded keys. This has resulted in a darker legend with MUCH better legibility. However, this has also resulted in an inconsistent legend color between R3, R4, and R5 and the blue keys. ePBT has agreed to send me some new samples of the blue keys with the new legend color.

For the sake of resolving my own doubts and making sure this is the best possible product, I have asked ePBT to send a new R2 base color test with this new batch of legends testing. They will send new tests but it will slow the process down.

Part of me feels like it will look better and satisfy more customers if the R2 is darker; part of me feels like customers will never be satisfied.

Either way the other base colors will NOT be changing, I know that they are slightly different than the renders and I do not care. The gradient looking good as a whole is far more important than render accuracy.

In some lighting scenarios R2 looks amazing. In others, it looks slightly off - not off from the pantone swatch - but off from the gradient. I think the effect is a byproduct of some of the blues becoming slightly more saturated during the matching process. It will take a few days to pick a new color to test and to ship swatches to kbdfans (which is so expensive fml).

The color to the left on these photos, 2151U, will be the tested new R2 color. I will chose between the new and old R2 color when ePBT completes the new dyesub legend test on the blue base keys. I have shipped the swatch to Kbdfans.

See attached photos. I have labeled all the images with what type of lighting they have. The "gamer" lighting is my own personal setup, it is mostly the light from two small lamps and some ambient light from the window. My apologies for the upside down images, if you download the images you should be able to fix that, I was just too lazy to fix half a dozen images on my phone and then figure out what corresponded to what lighting 😅

As far as how I am feeling, I am leaning heavily towards the new R2 color. While it feels slightly more saturated than I would ideally like, it is much more cohesive with the other colors imo than the original R2 color.

I'd love to hear your thoughts below or in my discord.
