Bullfrog 60 - ALPS 60%
« on: Sat, 26 November 2022, 12:46:43 »
BULLFROG 60

Here's something different, a 60% that is as hollow as it can get. Why? you may ask, ALPS, that's why. Very few modern boards offer the same breathing room SKCM & SKCL switches are used to so this board was made to make them feel welcome in the modern day.

Appearance & Overview

Supported layouts & mounting:
Standard Bakeneko v2 O-ring mount and daughter board
Gvalch'ca GA15.0 ALPS pcb with jst connector and ai03 daughter board

Internal volume compared to standard Bakeneko:

Typing Tests

ab_channel=HirdyGirdy

The pink polycarbonate prototype will also be sent to Karolus to have typing tests recorded in a more professional environment that also has a substantial reference catalog of other builds as well as Meepergon to be built on stream.

Vendors, Pricing and Timeline

Vendors: TBA

Pricing: Target for a kit including the case, POM plate, pcb and O-ring is below $300 + shipping

Timeline: Estimate is 6-8 weeks after vendors are selected and prepared to open a GB, though when this happens this will largely be determined by the vendors themselves.

MORE MODERN ALPS CUSTOMS LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Also, your photos are nuts. Great stuff homie!

Side note - I was testing an x-ring and compared to an o-ring, the x-ring seemed to make my gummy o-ring board sound a bit more hollow, so that might be something to look into for the future.

Interesting, but to be honest I think it sounds a bit flat. Sound is up to preference but those browns sounded really really high, which isn't how I'm used to hearing alps at all. Maybe It's just that I've only used browns in person in vintage boards, but I do think sound should be looked into here.
One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Eight, Nine, Ten, Eleven, Twelve, Thirteen, Fourteen, Fifteen, Sixteen, Seventeen, Eighteen, Nineteen, Twenty... Yeah that seems about right.

Cool project! I do wonder if hollowing out the forehead would make it sound even better.

YES, more ALPS stuff! Also it may seem a little sacrilegious, but I love the Cherry style lip of the case. Count me in for one! I got way too many tray mount 60% ALPS setups to pass on this.

The videos aren't a great representation of the sound, there's a lot more low frequency resonance in person that I hope Karolus will be able to capture in his video of the board. Carbon Fiber plates may also help bring a fuller sound to the switches where POM is best for clickies IME. Ty for the feedback though :)

Thanks! the cherry lip may seem like an odd choice for alps but paired with the rounded corners and larger forehead I think it came out to be a nice balance of vintage aesthetic and modern simplicity.

if you can, I would recommend looking at an E-Green of some sort, possible in the pastel range or muted darker tone to match the frog theme

other then that, I love the back design. just think a better color might help the look

no but there's another 60% in the works with a modular middle piece that will allow for custom spacings to account for non standard layouts & staggering of mod keys

Nice. In the works by you or someone else? Does this also refer to a separately soon to be available PCB?
