What is your favorite mouse scroll wheel and why?
« on: Sat, 16 February 2019, 23:37:17 »
I'm designing the cradle that goes inside of a mouse giving the wheel the ability to be clicked, tilted left and right, and toggled between smooth and bumpy(?) scrolling.  Right now I have a Logitech MX Ergo and a few Elecom mice, none of which have that nice of a scroll wheel.  I was hoping I could hear from some of you what mouse has the nicest scroll wheel and what makes it that way.  If possible, I'd be interested to know the diameter and thickness as well, however I know most people won't just tear open their favorite mouse for no reason  :P  I might be able to look that up provided I know what mouse it is.
 Thanks!

I like the default Logitech 518 clicks, but the Proteus Core infinity scroll is great--just that its standard clicks are too stark for me. I'm commenting to here to get thoughts. I recall someone saying they can replace the Proteus Core wheel with another, but I couldn't remember which.

My favourite scroll wheel is the one that does not exist, in favour of a proper third button that is not too hard and does not slip.

The best scroll wheel was the Logitech Revolution.
Spin it slow it notches, spin it fast and it disables the clutch and freespins. You could also force either mode in software and adjust how fast the clutch disengaged.

Logitech Anywhere 1, 2, 2s has this. Pressing the wheel engages/disengages the clutch, behind the wheel is a button for the third button.

No it doesn't. It still has a scroll-wheel in place of a proper button. Then it has a third button in a different place... if that indeed is a button. But reviews seem to say that it is some gesture input. At least definitely not on the same level as the left and right mouse buttons.

Like a third click for your ring finger?  Or a button instead of the wheel??

You can program the 3rd button to do anything.

As for a proper button instead, you can take my scroll wheel when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

I am likewise enslaved by my scroll wheel. Often, with my index finger stroking the thing in rote, I pass the time calculating how much time I would be saving with something like "Page Down" or arrow keys, but I keep mousing anyway.
Cognitive distortions are patterns of thought, typically automatic and unconscious, that cause an inaccurate, negative view of situations, people, and/or events. These include things like jumping to conclusions; black-and-white thinking; negative mental filtering; overgeneralizing; mindreading (incorrectly believing we know what others are thinking, what their motives are); and emotional reasoning (believing that if we are feeling something, or if what we are thinking is associated with a strong emotion, it must be true).

I am a big fan of the scroll wheel on the MX Master 2s. I like that you can make it smooth... or not smooth.
