Not for nothing, but Kia and Hyundai are coming strong in the US market.  Both of them have models I would actually consider buying.  The Kia Optima and the Hyundai Elantra are pretty hot.  I still think they are kinda under-powered, though.

Underpowered can actually be more fun, because that means you can drive it harder without getting arrested.

50,000ks on the thing, and it was immaculate till some bastard reversed into it.

I'm looking to buy myself a little fun car, something along the lines of a first gen MX-5 or the like.

Lets go one step back.
The love story with Subaru started with the WRX. Back then the STi was not available in North America yet. I was even told it would never be sold here. So I made the move with a WRX. It was my first AWD and decided to start on the right foot by taking courses in lapping and winter racing. Although it was only my second sports car I was always a boy racer. Bad decision for the wallet. The adrenaline rushes on the track was such... Much more expensive than few keyboards. I spent a sh!t load of money to mod the WRX and raced it for 3 years (solo I and II). After that it was starting to show some serious signs of fatigue and got rid of it before falling apart.

Traded it for the new LGT. 2005 Was a new model year. I did have some minor hickups with it but nothing critical. I thought I was cured of the speed craving. Enjoyed it for a while. I really liked the old school Subies and when I saw where Subaru was going with the new generation (2008+) I decided to get a 2007 STi. Something happen during all these years, 250kmh was not fun anymore. Life perspective changed or something. The STi became an expensive toy with no purpose. Kissed the toy goodbye and moved on.

The 4runner is a blast in snow storms and the wife can finally enjoy a nice and quiet ride in the LS-430 (Which sleeps in the garage during winter)... The car... not the wife. I enjoy the wife all year long.

Haha, cool story, BucklingSpring.

I never understood the WRX positioning - it's either you go for STi, or you keep low profile and save money. A friend of mine sports heavily modded 2006 STi that bears very little inner resemblance to the stock one. With over 500 HP at the wheels, it's mostly the chassis left original. That same guy says it's not worth buying STi either - just get group N chassis and all the Prodrive, etc., goodies.

Myself, I enjoy 2006 Legacy 3.0R Spec B (gearbox very similar to STi), and am fully satisfied.

The Spec B is a wonderful car. Roomy, fast, agile and no cop magnet.

The STi thing is for people who wants a 4 door affordable sports car that comes with 4/5 years warranty. It cost much more than a STi to raise a WRX to the STi level. But if you go extreme and spend 15K for the ultimate BBK + 30K for a complete Cosworth Engine + 7K for a fat Turbo and then add all the cooling, trany upgrade, suspension tune and a street legal cage... Then yes, paying extra for something you are going to rip off the car anyway is non-sense.  You end up with a 130K plus car who needs constant attention. It really depends what you want to do with the car.

What I really don't get is that family guy who is always hanging around the speed shop, who got pretty much all the above mods, shines every single parts with a tooth brush, never went on a track and will decline all challenges he gets on the street. That's weird.

I need to be careful of what I say since I have a black 87U all 55g sitting in a box just to be allowed to list it in my signature (hehehehe). At least I didn't need a second mortgage to show it off.

Yup, getting the stock STi makes some sense for a cheap sports car, but it's not a rally car at all. Nothing is rally car - every part goes expendable then. Now that's an expensive hobby.

Still, STi's gearbox and the differentials (esp. the manually controlled central one) are very good.

I wonder why the 3.0R Legacy Spec B never made it to the US - perhaps some regulations.

SoA makes weird calls. IMHO the LGT Spec B with 2.5 turbo is no less than the 3.0R.

Hum... Calling a STi a cheap sports car is a bit strong don't you think?

How would you call a Cobalt SS or a Neon SRT4?

The H6 NA engine is smoother and less noisy, and most probably less maintenance (more reliable). That could be a personal preference though, since the max HP is almost equal IIRC.
It would be interesting to compare gas mileage.

My lack of English language education. I meant "less expensive" - you get more and you pay less. If I were after one such sports car, I'd head to STi.

How about difficulty of maintenance on the longer H6, though? It could be harder to access some things.

Also, I'd expect that the H4 would handle better - not as much weight hanging out the front.

H4, H6 - they're both below, so access is kinda same.
2.5 turbocharged has the usual lag before turbo kicks in. More cylinders is good.
As to engine weight - not a factor at all. Check the different models' specs.

I can do little below 10L / 100km when not in a hurry, close enough to what I had with 2.0L NA H4. That includes the AWD losses and some air conditioning.

Right, but even if the 2.5 is heavier, its weight is further back in the chassis, improving weight distribution on a naturally front-heavy layout.

The old 2.0l turbo properly tuned was light and a tork monster. Reliable as it can be as well. No wonder so many small aircraft are using it.

So just to be a PITA, I go the other way... I prefer the EJ20 over the 2.5 and the 3.0 or the 3.6 for that matter. ;-)

It's not a super-powerful racer, but it's a great, classy small car for the price. I definitely recommend it.

VW made some great moves in the past couple of years. I totally agree with you. The Jetta is one of them.
It was about time they did something because VW 7 to 3 years ago were the worst years ever for buying VW. All but problems.

I have a '96 Opel Astra (was rebadged as a Holden here in Aus, but it is really an Opel. The Engine cover says Opel as well as all the parts and even that badge thingo under the hood with the manufacture date).
I picked it up for $500, unregistered with a cracked windscreen and some minor body damage. And thought it would be a nice easy fix up for a first car. And then I found out just how much European imports cost here. -_- I love the car to bits, but over $2k later on some minor engine spares and I haven't even driven it yet because there is still another $1k of work to do and then I still have to get it registered for driving and because of the slight body damage on the rear (doesn't affect the driving, just looks a little ugly) nobody will insure it. I'm currently torn between trying to sell it or hang onto it for another few years for when I have money to rebuild it.

At the moment I drive my mother's 2011 Nissan Micra.

My dream cars would be any of: Mitsubishi Lancer Evo X, '69 Chevrolet Camaro, '69 or '71 Chevrolet C10 pickup (my dad rebuilt a '69 shortbed when I was 2-3, beautiful vehicle), Nissan Silvia S14, Nissan Skyline GTR35 or a 1985 Toyota Hi-Lux SR5 4x4 X-tra Cab (like the one in back to the future).

Also I'm Eurotrash so none of those "Jetta/Audi drivers are *******s" comments mentioned earlier in the thread apply to me, thankyou.  The Jetta is a car for grandads over here, ha ha.  BMW drivers are still mostly jumped up middle management though - although you can't fault the cars themselves, I had an E36 and it was lovely.  Shame about what happened once Chris Bangle joined though.

If the body panels are that rusted, how rusty are the floorboards and shock towers? (In the US, Mk3s can look cosmetically great, but the floorboards are gone, and the shock towers are separated from the unibody.)
