^I broke with tradition of getting a watch for my Bday this year.

I did grab a few other watches though. Only thing left this year I want is SNE499, but I grabbed too many PADIs this year.

Fugu me. NY0081. The new lume dial is kinda ugly compared to classic NY0040.

Feels a bit ronery around here lately :'(

Edit, lume lit with 365nm UV LED. It kinda turned the markers' lume whitish blue. They're all blue green like the hands without the UV LED.

New Orient Star for me. 39mm and looks great.
+Sapphire crystal
+Milled folding part of the clasp
+3D looking dial
+Sunburst dial
+power reserve meter
+Date only
+Decorated movement (just go look up Orient Star Classic, the movement is pretty much the same but updated for 50hour reserve. too lazy to dig mine out).

-... there are no minuses.

I've seen the Orient Star IRL and it looks much nicer than on photos.
But I'd rather wear a SARB035 (which you could get for $275 brand new just a few years ago).

The SARB035 was the last good budget Seiko IMHO, but now I'd have to say that Orient Star took its place.

I too have a few Seiko and Orients, and IMHO the Orient Stars are usually a notch above the Seiko SARB line at least. Their equivalent would be the current Presage line, with the OS being more affordable and having their signature power reserve indicator on almost everything. Also some models have zero equivalent in the Seiko lineup like the Retrograde or the World Timer..
I am strongly considering getting one of the newer OS Titanium (like the darker one with blue accents), or that blue/cyan faced open heart limited edition (cant access the photos here but i'll post later if asked)

Yeah, but how about that dial?!

(...)Whereas back then I wrote about the tyranny of the majority, today I'd combine that with the tyranny of the minorities. These days, you have to be careful of both. They both want to control you. The first group, by making you do the same thing over and over again. The second group is indicated by the letters I get from the Vassar girls who want me to put more women's lib in The Martian Chronicles, or from blacks who want more black people in Dandelion Wine.
I say to both bunches, Whether you're a majority or minority, bug off! To hell with anybody who wants to tell me what to write. Their society breaks down into subsections of minorities who then, in effect, burn books by banning them. All this political correctness that's rampant on campuses is b.s.

Aye the newer Presage "baby snowflake" dials are truly amazing. Still the Orient Star are a good competitor in their own way for a lesser price... OS are more specialized in those complications like small seconds, power reserve, retrograde... and the open hearts / skeletons, all of which you dont get so much (or at all) with the Seiko Presage line. I think they have their own charm,  plus like Seiko they are entirely made in-house.
And yeah the new ceramic dial Presage is also very nice, so are the enamel and urushi laquer dials..

It looks much more expensive than it is in person. Orient Star + Royal Orients are cat's meow for me @ dressy watches. Definitely prefer it more than the Seiko/Grand Seiko cousins.

Edit: I do find the Orient Star's finishing really is a cut above the Seiko, even at 1/2 the price. Not that Seikos are shabby, just Orient really do put in the attention to detail better than Seiko. (Also better regulated *ahem*)

Edit2:
My brand preferences:
Diver = Seiko and Orient (OSD! and M-Force)
Dress = Orient
Quartz/Solar = Citizen
Sports = G-Shock
Snob/Luxury = JLC
Honorable mention = Tudor

I have a much shorter list, so enjoy:

EDC := Japanese Quartz  (Casio Ti Oceanus, Citizen paper dial Eco-Drive, Quartz GS, etc.)
Honorable mention := Apple Watch (if you are a member of the Apple ecosystem)

I know what you mean - I had the same thoughts but tried it on in person and fell in love with it.  I have average-to-small wrists (6.75") and I think it wears perfectly.  The lug-to-lug is rather long since the lugs are enormous, so if you're someone who typically wears ~36mm watches it will be way too large.  But, if you tend to wear 38" I do recommend trying it on if there's an AD around you.

I just remembered something. The back of that new Orient says Epson, which is a Seiko subsidiary (and the owner of Orient). Interesting that it never showed up before.

Isnt Seiko another subsidiary of Epson ? I think i recall both companies being part of Epson while keeping their own identity..

We actually have the same size wrists, I just prefer smaller watches.

Guess I should run to the AD and try one on, 40mm watches fit fine on my wrist so I guess it's worth a shot

I have a Rolex Oysterquartz. There's a photo of it somewhere above in this thread. The design of the Maurice Lacroix case is very similar to my Rolex, with the integral bracelet. With these watches you can't swap out the bracelets for anything else. My point is just to be aware that with that Maurice Lacroix you're stuck with the bracelet it came with. No fancy leather straps for you.

oh I guess I never posted it here but I got a grand seiko
Please post!!

Hi gaiz,
Been busy with stuff. Buying fewer watches lately... I'll post more pix eventually.

wrist check: My ketchup and mustard beast. Mainly been wearing smaller watches ~42mm. Breaking out the 47mm beast is fun occasionally :p

current list of watch wants:
BB58
blue MM300

nothing lately really made me want to rush out and buy one.

Get one of these to complete your looks.  :))

Batman | Undone

The Caped Crusader:

The Dark Knight:

I opted for the latter since I like the gray understated look more.  Have to be honest, I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the watch considering how much they cost (or in this case, don't cost).  For the price, it has the hybrid movement (ie. quartz with sweeping hands)

Package:

Lume shot:

It came with a pair of Bluetooth earbuds and an extra pair of straps (the vintage grey leather you see in the pictures above):

I don't know, if we have to stay at home any longer then I might get that Caped Crusader too.
Att fly är livet, att dröja, döden.
Din Eli
