It's probably illegal and highly unethical but I've always been curious if one could order a Corsair board, desolder/replace the switches with something cheap and then ship it back.

Even though I would never do this myself I have to wonder if anyone has tried it.

That keyboard is pretty hard to take apart. Multiple PCBs.

I was planning on putting other switches I had in it and using it as a spare keyboard, but breaking one of the PCBs on accident pretty much killed that plan.

I may very well try these for my next linear board. They sound a lot like Topre.

Something to keep in mind is that Cherry MX Red Silent feels a lot like Matias Quiet ALPS (since Cherry kind of copied the concept over anyway).

Only difference is one is linear one is tactile.  So if you like one you might like the others, conversely if you didn't like it then you probably won't like the other one either.

Are there any ratings in dB of these switches versus the plain Reds? I don't mind the volume of the Reds at all myself but I don't use them at work because they're way too loud.

I kind of feel that way about silenced switches. I don't see the point of making non-silenced switches anymore, whether we're talking about Topre, Cherry, or Matias. At least Matias doesn't really make a non-silenced switch anymore. The others should take their cue from Matias in this regard.

Have you tried doing it or just figure it will? Because I got some loose Silent Reds in the mail today, and experimented a bit and the downstroke seemed to be dampened using Gateron and Zealio switch bodies.
On a side note the silent red stem in a stock Gateron body(not clear) felt scratchier than stock Cherry, but the Zealio housing felt overall smoother and a smidge quieter.

Know that Gateron Black bottom are either "flat" like Zealios or they have molds. It really depends on which black bottoms you have. Most people don't build enough keyboards to come across both types of bottoms.

You can definitely hear ping noises from the spring, I think a little bit of lube on the springs should fix that though.

My final switch is probably gonna be gateron milk bottoms, cherry rgb tops, 65g springs, and techkeys thin mix of lube

They are lighter yeah but I wouldn't say way lighter. I really prefer light switches though. I used Gateron Clears for a while and enjoyed them. I also converted my HHKB to 35g and love it. So I'm a big fan of light switches.
