I honestly couldn't tell the difference between my sata evo drive and my HP ex920 drive. Right now my post takes up the most time during my bootup sequence, so really there's not much room to improve. This is a situation where we've reached good enough performance and to me, a drive that's twice as fast isn't twice as nice at this point.

Sounds like your system is strong enough to  push a Sata but not enough to go much beyond that.
Mind if I ask what you're running?

Hmm, yeah I actually bought the computer second hand from a kid off craigslist. It's actually really slow on POST, the whole sequence takes like 10 seconds or more. Maybe it just needs a cmos reset or something, I haven't bothered to look into it. I don't think my computer is getting bottlenecked, but maybe so. It's a 7700k, Asus Z170-a, and 32gb of 2666mhz memory. It's probably just me too dumb too notice the difference, but come to think of it, maybe it is the motherboard. Maybe worth a bios upgrade or similar?

You should be quite a bit over the hump, but as you go up, you do get diminishing returns. Still, I would have expected it to be noticeable, maybe only a little but still should have been.

In bios, I believe it's fast boot you want to change, it should drop post time in half. However... On some boards this will disable all USB ports until Windows starts, some disable all but the keyboard, some have different levels. If it does kill the keyboard, you can stll get to bios through Windows or terminal commands, but should your OS die it would mean clearing the cmos. Newer bios may give you better options.

As for for the system speed...
How old was the install when you got it? After a year or two, Windows will slow quite a bit. Using a drive image can also cause severe speed loss. Could also be a tired drive, bad driver... It's hard to say really. Either way, if you haven't reloaded it since you got it, reload it.

If it's a Hackintosh, then there is no hope. A faster drive or faster cpu, or even more ram will do NOTHING (sorry Mac users). The OS isn't optimized to take advantage of faster hardware.

For those Linux HDD hold outs not totally convinced about the performance upgrade of a decent SSD--the only time I'm aware of swap space usage is if I bring up htop or top for some other reason.  Pretty neat.

Newegg has the 860 evo 500Gb for $69 today, If I didn't just get the crucial mx500 for ~$45 I'd jump on it.

Samsung tax isn't worth it if vs crucial,  because they're both quite reliable.

ALTHOUGH, recently micron(crucial) dropped the ball on some Ram going into 2070/2080 and it's been blowing up people's cards.

I just bought a Samsung NVMe M.2 970 EVO plus 500 GB to replace my three years old Samsung 950 Pro 250 GB. These things do smoke 10 GBit ethernet links.
Anyway I'm super happy with how fast and reliable my Samsung 950 Pro has been during about three years now, so I continued with Samsung. And I'll use my now old 950 Pro to boost an older PC.

Ah funny I have basically the same system: Asus Z170-A mobo, i7 6700K (early Z170-A mobo here and I haven't patched it to accept 7th gen core i7 so I'm using 6th gen), 16 GB of RAM, added recently a Samsung 970 Evo Plus SSD (used to have a Samsung 950 Pro which is now going into another machine here at home).

POST is basically instant: POST is so fast that when I turn the computer + monitor on the monitor ain't showing the screen yet before the POST is done. First image I see when the monitor shows something is the login prompt (recent Debian Linux, hence with systemd). And it's not as if the monitor was slow before displaying something. Now I may have turned checks off and whatnots in the BIOS, don't remember (I think I've got this system since nearly four years now).

Well that's interesting. I've still been running into the same problem, I haven't diagnosed it much because I feel like this is one of those e-peen measuring things, just like with most other people comparing their computer rigs. It lightly bugs me that everything boots up slower than it should, but not enough to really want to fix it. Since I usually put my computer to sleep instead of turning it off, I hardly even have to go through the boot sequence. I feel like the computer is a black boxed piece of hardware that you really shouldn't have to think about, so I try not to obsess over it much anymore.

Actually that's one of the few things I bothered checking, I do indeed have fast boot. I noticed that everything was super slow in bios when I did check for this a few months ago. Since everyone's all curious now I'll try updating the bios sometime this weekend and see if things improve.

If it's still that slow, I'd start just trying various things and see what effect it has. Drives me bonkers waiting for bios, especially when the whole point of UEFI was reduce that load time.

Hey, sorry for the late answer I'm on vacation atm but I quickly checked the BIOS before leaving: nothing special besides that the fast boot thinggy is turned on and then some setting is set to one second (which I think is the lowest). I can check in more details when I come back from vacation. But it's a Z170-A mobo for sure and it starts up really fast (btw my Debian Buster / systemd is configured to boot in text mode, from which I then manually launch the graphical interface: an old habit).

Whew, what a journey. Just got around to addressing my slow BIOS sequence on my Z170A board. Flashed the bios and everything is fine now. It was a headache for me since my bios flash failed initially and I had to recover it, took me around 60-90 minutes all said and done.

Although I've been using SSD's for boot drive (my 3960X rig has a 250GB Samsung 850 EVO, same goes with my 4770K HTPC) my recent Ryzen build's the first to use an NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD (256GB) as boot drive. And it's the first that I've used SSD's on a bigger scale for game storage, a 4TB Samsung 860 EVO and a 2TB Samsung 860 QVO......and for games that I don't play that often, a 6TB WD Black, no problem thus far.....

Love how these newer case allow for SSD's to be mounted this way, runs pretty cool as cool air is being pushed past it from the 2x 200mm front intake fans.
