Look into the Golf TDI SEL if you have any sort of commute. 40+ mpg easy. The SEL adds wheels and nav, you can go lower trim and do it yourself better if you wanted. 2016 comes with Apple CarPlay.

Either way congrats and enjoy, Weather Tech Digitfit mats, tint, dashcam, good radar detector  with blendmount (Redline, Max2, or V1) and you're gtg.

You'll need a good down payment and negotiation skills. But low 3 is doable.

Radar detectors are pointless. At least here, all cops are using laser now.

Cops have to be stationary to use laser, plenty out and about running radar, but it does depend on where you are, I very very rarely get a laser hit, first time I get a laser ticket I'm putting in countermeasure though.

Running a good detector with Escort live and watching the reported LEOs is a solid set up.

Oh they will. Email one and CC the others. So they know they are competing for your business. Whatever price they offer, they can go lower. If not, move on. Dealers are a dime a dozen, they need you not the other way around.

Go to know man,

Ill definitely hit them up for some quotes. Im bringing a friend whom knows the dealership schtick, i have no issues walking out and writing a letter to VW about my experiences if they try some major BS.

My GF bought a 2013 accent brandy new a while back and it was a nightmare, not looking forward to this at all...

Ok sorry for the novel. But I want to help.

I've been involved in the purchase of four new cars in the last three years (my Evo in 2014, wife's 2012 Sportwagen TDI which was totaled by a red light running *******, her 2014 GTI which she didn’t like, then the 2015 Sportwagen TDI).

If I were to go buy a new car today this is exactly what I would do.

Go to the dealers website and pick out the car you want with the options you want.

Then go to
http://www.edmunds.com/tmv.html

Put in the year-make-model-zip of the dealer - then on the next page click "no thanks I'll build my own"

Now plug in the options EXACTLY as you see them in the car from the inventory you want to go see.

*You'll probably always be stuck with the crappy rubber mats, VW ones wear out on the driver side within 20k*

Once you plug in all the exact options you'll get a final page. Print this out and bring it with you.

If you get the Invoice Price then you did very well. The last three cars we got either at invoice or below. I got my Evo at Invoice minus the destination fee. The VW dealers wouldn’t budget on that fee.

If you end up seeing another car the price will be off and it will be harder to calculate. You may want to build the car twice in TMV, the one you are looking at and one with all the options, then you can remove them to correspond with another car and still get accurate numbers. If the calculations are off the dealer will look at your price like its in another language.

Now if the dealer is going to sell you the new car for less, they are going to try to make up for it by giving you less on your trade in, so expect that.

As far as trade ins go, in some states, such as the state I am in MD, the amount they put down on the new car from the trade you don’t pay taxes on that amount.

So lets say the GTI is 30k, and they give you 5k for your car, you pay taxes on the balance. So in essence the 5k they give you is actually 5k plus the tax rate, so if its 6% they actually gave you $5300.00. For smaller trade ins that isn’t that big of a deal, but when its 20k plus that matters.

If I were you I would wait until the dealers started getting the 2016 models in. It is nearly July and it won't be that long. With the 2016 models they'll have the driver aid packages that will brake for you if you are about to hit something. They will also have Apple Carplay, if you are an Apple user that is really REALLY nice. The Google map feature for navigation is worth it in and of itself. Real time traffic and updates. Regular nav sucks hard comparatively.

https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/

So you can either get the 2016 model with the new gadgets or get a better deal on the 2015 models they are trying to unload. Either way it’s a win-win if you can wait a few months.

As far as your Yaris.. man if you aren’t in a rush it may be worth it to clean it up, do a little maintenance, put a cheap set of tires on it and sell it on Craigslist/Autotrader/Cars.com. People are always looking for those cheaper cars for their kids. If the dealer offers you a small amount then fk it, walk away, sell it private party, then come back with a envelope full of cash for your down payment. Oh and Endmonds TMV is very ugly plugging in used cars, use Kelly Blue Book, or just look on autotrader within a 100 mile for Yaris models and see what they are going for private party.

Oh and another thing, this has worked for me every time we've gone to get a car. When the sales guy comes over and hands us the numbers we say we need to talk about it. Then we sit somewhere in the showroom and talk about whatever for 15 min. The sales guy starts to get nervous and will come over, and I'll say just a few more minutes, then we'll talk about nothing for a while longer and every time this has yielded either 1k off the new car or added 1k for the trade in. Just don't be rude, just act like you are really unsure about that price. Works like a charm.

Good luck and let us know what you do.

Cheers,
Justin

so far nobody has made anything that even messes with lasers on a consistent basis. I mean they have those license plate covers that work, but as long as the laser gets aimed literally anywhere else it's useless

Where I live cops are set up everywhere on major roads, but literally nothing on back roads (understandably)

Laser tech evolves a lot so that cat and mouse game changes a lot.

I came across these forums when I was researching a new window unit. If you want to learn register, wait for approval, then poke around in the forums. The guys in there are nutty about that stuff as much or more than we are about keyboards here.

http://radarandlaserforum.com/forum.php

There are plenty of units that will either jam or "move" lasers. They aren't a scam, they just have to be installed and used correctly. Just like everything else you have to research the hell out of it and figure out what is meh, entry level, and high end.

They are also illegal most everywhere so you have to be on the low about it.

Yeah Virginia is one of the few places that radar detectors are outright banned for everyone. Also:

Weird, works fine on my end. I normally poke around on there with my iPad.
What gave you that alert?

In VA you could run the Redline if you wanted to risk it,  that one is undetectable. Which is why truckers love it.

On the topic of radar detectors, I like Valentine V1 the best, because it has arrows pointing front, back and sideways, so you always know the direction of the radar.

Escort ones are great too, and many friends have used it, but if you're on the fence between the two, I'd urge you to get the Valentine V1 instead just because of the arrows.

Yea they don't play in VA, if they see it on your window they'll screw with you. Not sure if they can steal it or not. I go out of my way to not drive through VA because I had a bad run in with a state trooper there a few years ago. I refuse to spend a dime in that state if I can avoid it. Last two times I had to go down south I went out through western MD then down south through WV. Screw VA government and the bacon they have policing for profit there.

V1 is a solid detector but its software is Android only and isn’t as polished as Escort Live which uses Google maps.

Plus everything I've read the Redline kills everything on off axis detection and range, that and its undetectable to everything. Which only matters in DC/VA and some parts of Canada, but still if a commercial enforcement LEOs pulls you over and may treat you differently knowing you have a detector.

As far as Escort Live when you see a LEO you can report them via your phone or the button on the Live Cable and on your phone it will show you when other people report and/or get radar/laser hits.  From everything I've heard and read it’s a really slick system and I love the fact I can warn other drivers. I'm the kind of guy who flashes headlight warnings if I see a speed trap. Fk policing for profit.

I'm putting mine in this weekend so we'll see.

The best way to mount a radar detector is to hardwire it using the electronics in your rear view mirror or to your fusebox using a add-a-circuit then use a Blendmount to mount it under your rear view mirror. This is my set up now, an old RX65 I've had for 9 years. Its retiring to the wife's car with a similar set up.

The Laser installs I've seen are pretty slick, very stealth, no cables visable or anything.

I'll post a few pics of my install later this weekend. I just did the Redline. I'd like to do the Laser, maybe next year. I don't haul ass everywhere but it would be nice.

It was actually kind of cool, the roads I took were actually pretty nice. I did have to cut through the thin part of VA, but that was quick.
It was an extra 100 miles on my trip, but not going through DC and VA I actually got to GA faster going that way.

The mirror blends in really well, I always leave it up there, and its easy to take out, the power cable unplugs so you just leave that routed up through your headliner. The front facing one is like $75 now, you just have to buy a bigger memory card. The one I bought three years ago is in the wife's car and going strong. I have the dual camera version in mine now which has been a little buggy, wouldn't recommend it unless you really wanted a rear cam (at twice the price)

I use a blendmount too. You can not see my radar detector and dash cam if you were talking to me from the driver's side window.
The whole mirror assembly + dashcam + radar detector looks like a single unit.

The trick thing with the mirror is that you can hit a tab and it will activate a screen on the right side, so you'll see what you are recording and the timestamp. This will time out (depending on settings) and be invisible, going back to a normal mirror. You also get a indicator light that blinks knowing its recording. All the other units I saw (at the time) were just stand alone lipstick cameras and you couldn't see what was in frame, and only had a indicator light. For the price the mirror is pretty awesome. And when the card is full it just loops and overwrites, so its really a set it and forget it item.

Although it does stick out on the right and blocks the passenger side visor from going down all the way, in some cars.

I've had a set on both my Subarus and now the Evo, they make good stuff  :thumb:

I had the classics on my first Subaru, they don't flop around like the Urethane which is nice, but they also sound like they are going to get damaged going over speed bumps. I've got the white lettered urethane on the Evolution. Have to protect that cheap thin paint  >:D

I bought one of these -

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00IPDD59W?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00

It's only a dashcam, but I think it's going to be super useful. I still haven't got round to fitting it because it feels cheap as **** and I don't want to pull my headliner down because they are prone to sagging on the Mk 2s :(

I do need to fit it though. There are some craaaaaaazy bastards on my way to and from work...
Can we get them to build the Alps ten feet higher and get Cherry to pay for it?

I recently upgraded from a RX65 which I bought in 2006.

Upgraded to a Redline with Escort External Speaker and Escort Live Cable to run the Escort Live App.

Power:
I used an Add-A-Circuit for each device. A good pro-tip is labeling each one, so if you ever have issues you'll know if it's your circuit causing them or not.

Mirror Camera - Wipers
Radar Detector - Cigarette Lighter
Speaker - Mirrors

Ground, all three in one:

Speaker Mounting:

I had a real hard time getting my drill in that far, it messed me up on the second pilot hole and it came out crooked. It's deep under the dash so it doesn’t really matter.

I think it's worth it to add the speaker, the detector doesn’t blast my passengers, only me and I'll hear it over the stereo+windows down.

Escort Live Mounting:

Within easy reach. I had initially planned on mounting it in a dead panel button but it was too big.

This is looking down into the dash with the head unit out. I drilled a hole into the cubby from above and routed the two cables in.

Escort Live App:
Maybe next year I'll do the Apple CarPlay if it will work with the app. Until then I'll use my ProClip iPhone mount.

Cable Management:
First time using Techflex 1/4 F6 Wrap-around braided sleeving. This stuff is really nice and easy to work with. You just have to melt the ends a bit when you cut it. On Amazon for $9 for 10 feet.
