[IC] Modernized OTD PCBs and reproduction plates
« on: Wed, 10 April 2019, 12:20:40 »
This has been a project of mine for a while now and I finally think I reached a spot where these could go into production.

So, what's this about?

People who own OTD keyboards know that the PCBs can be a royal pain in the butt. They are PS/2 only and a good amount of them aren't reprogrammable. Maybe they've been desoldered and patched up by the previous owners, maybe even completely destroyed. Seeing some of the original PCBs trading for rather high 3 figures, it's time to put an end to this.
This IC is about a new PCB that matches the original one as closely as possible while still offering most of the advancements we had in PCBs since then.
The person who graciously lent me an OTD to take measurements from was interested in making an Alps build, so I had to take plate measurements as well and ended up making all kinds of different plate configurations, some of these are likely to be offered too.

PCB specs:

  • USB but you'll have to hardwire a cable, just like the original PCBs did with the PS/2 cable
  • Fits: OTD 356.2, 360c, 456gt, The Cheat, (356n and 356n mkii, but only with a different plate because it does not support the original layout), and is very likely to fit 356cl, 356cl DGE and 356cls, so every TKL except the 356l
  • Layout: Normal WKL TKL layout with and without blockers
  • Material: 1.2mm thick CEM-3 with red Soldermask, just like most of the original PCBs
  • LED indicators for Caps Lock and Scroll Lock
  • Supports MX and ALPS switches, with all possible caps lock positions with ALPS switches
  • Powered my an Atmega32u4, so programmable via QMK and TMK (even Keyplus if you want)
  • Fully assembled, no in-switch diode soldering like on the original PCBs

Plates:
In case some people have a working original PCB but still want to upgrade to this one I'll be likely offering plates too. These are as close to the original as possible and have all of the little slits and cuts and everything.

Many different materials and layouts (two versions of ALPS fullplate, MX fullplate, MX halfplate, etc.) are technically possible but not all of them would make it, so if you are interested in plates fill out the form accordingly. The plate is based on the 456gt plate and fits the 456gt, 360c and 356.2. It does not fit the Cheat, the 356cl and the 356cl DGE. Fitment on 356n and 356n mkii is not confirmed but possible.

Misc. parts:
If there's enough demand sourcing a nice thick coiled USB cables that go well with the PCB could be a possibility.
Another possible addon could be precut bandaids because the PCBs are 1.2mm thick and as such benefit a lot from band aids.

Form: https://forms.gle/QkhtA93TxV1m9N9m7

If anyone gets the chance to crosspost this into foreign forums, mainly chinese and korean ones, I'd be grateful because I don't speak those languages and don't trust google translate enough for that.

Pics(Sorry for the bad pics, I forgot to take good ones when I still had the PCB here, I'll make some new renders later):

These pics are from an old version without the support for winkeys, everything else is the same

Q&A:

This will be filled with more or less important questions over time.

Q: Do you plan on releasing the files?
A: Yes, after the GB.

Q: Ne ISO avail?
A: no

Do you plan on releasing the files? Would be great to open source them so you're not perpetuating the problem of scarcity.

Long overdue. There were listing on Taobao for OTD compatible plate/pcbs a few years ago, but have completely disappeared now. This is welcome.

Yep, I came into possession of one of those recently. They aren't programmable but they do have backlight support which is interesting.

Even as a non-OTD-owner this is good news. The more open designs the better.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Right now the numbers are looking like the following things will be definitely offered:
the PCBs (duh)
Alu full plates
Polycarb half plates
USB cables

It looks like the demand for all the other things is very low, with less than a hand full of people showing interest, so if you want something fill out the form. I'm probably not going to offer an option that only got one person interested in buying a single unit of unless that person is willing to pay one-off pricing.

Bull****.

No modern tkl is as well thought through as the OTDs were, otd mini is still by far the best gasket mounted. All otds were done for a specific switch in mind, that alone shows there was more engineering involved than nowadays. The only thing that sucked was the annodozing at the time...

i'll agree that mini is the exception, and maybe 356N

1) you have clearly never tried to program one of these boards with AIKON, the original firmware

to put it simply: do you use a 64 bit operating system later than windows XP? you can't use the software

so you open a VM

does your PC have a ps/2 port? if not, you can't write your firmware updates to the board in the first place. and you need some weird adapter to be able to do it as well

bootmapper helps it a little but there are a lot of weird bugs and quirks that gimp the functionality a bit

2) most of what makes the 356 boards "well thought out" has basically been proven to be weird pseudoscience at this point

there's not a lot of proof that anything eungsam did actually made any of the boards feel better

sound better sure, but with the recent uptick in lubing technique and sound obsession, we passed the 356 boards already (but that's subjective)

especially now that we've got more gasket mounted and integrated plate boards

what i can agree with is that they were first, and are important pieces of history

but to say that they're better than anything we have now is at the very least a big stretch

Bull****.

No modern tkl is as well thought through as the OTDs were, otd mini is still by far the best gasket mounted. All otds were done for a specific switch in mind, that alone shows there was more engineering involved than nowadays. The only thing that sucked was the annodozing at the time...

I agree with you when it comes to the aesthetics of the OTD boards, both inside and out. There's a certain tastefulness to them that I don't think has been matched by anything since. Of course, that's subjective, and perhaps the hype has just seeped into my subconscious over the years. I don't think there's anything particularly special about the mounting of any of them especially compared to keyboards made recently. Also, while they may have been done for a specific switch, that was only to a certain preference. For example, just because the 356N was made to compliment tactile switches does not mean it will suit everyone's mounting preference for tactile switches.

Heh I'm typing on a $5000 board.

It's solely flex or history, even if it feels better ps2 is a waste. There's no reason for someone to "need" an otd.

But there is people hyping stuff up in comparison to OTD which is asking for a debate.

If you are truly happy with your keyboard there's no reason to have to justify it to other people, or constantly compare it to keyboards made 6 years ago. But at the same time I don't think any keyboards even if they are better in every way will hit the prestige that OTD has from being progressive back then.

Why would you buy a car made in the 50's or 60's? Not because they're quicker, better handling, or more efficient than current day vehicles. You buy em because of the history

I can’t wait for this to happen. I really need a new a plate + pcb. Also, hopefully the Alps combo gets enough traction too.

My only regret is I didn't buy more. OTD has been a great investment

Are these compatible with TGR Jane v1s? I wasn't sure since TGR is better than OTD anyway.
