Hey guys, any place to get GB updates? Does anyone know something new about this gorgeous board?

I'll try and send out GB updates soon. Just kinda swamped with life at the moment. Order's been placed and I'm waiting from an update from mfg atm.
Thanks for the quick update! Deal with life first, then with keyboards! :) But just FYI, without wanting to stress you (!!):  Small updates like that are really appreciated from you, even if they don‘t contain a lot of information. This way, we know that things are moving!

What kind of ALPS are you guys planning on using? I have some SKCL greens, but not sure yet if I want to go with linears. I also got some Oranges on the way, pretty excited for those!

I'm definitely planning on going with linears. I've actually never touched an ALPS switch in my life, so I'm not entirely sure which switches to go with. SKCL greens seem like the obvious choice, but I'm curious if there are better options -- I enjoy a really smooth, very low-actuation force linear. I currently use Gat silent reds, which I enjoy pretty well, though I wouldn't mind an even lighter switch.

Well my GB thread never got approved so I'll throw updates here till it does. I'll ping a mod tonight.

I haven't had the chance to formally update yet, but they're in the CNC stage of things. Should be a little less than halfway done. A little delayed because of National Day.

How are the PCB side of things? And are we still looking at Q1/Q2 shipping ETA?

PCB side of things haven't been started yet but pcb manu is fast so its not as much of a worry.

And yes, we're still on target for the Q1/Q2 delivery date

QC Finishing up. Should be here soon. Waiting on the PCB fab atm.

Packaging hasn't been sorted out yet. If I can't get custom cut foam and boxes sorted out in time, I'll be wrapping the hell out of these with thick foam sheets and then sending them out.

Gonna copy-paste this from my website update, but if you want a TL;DR...

Cases were not made to my standards. I dont trust the factory to 'fix' these as there's no perfect fix to the issue that I am seeing. Going to allocate current 50 units as b-stock and move to my other factory.

--

All cases were completed last week and during QC, the factory found some issues with the anodization which have arisen as a result of the material. It's quite a mystery to us since the prototype came out flawless and according to the factory, the same material supplier and anodizing factory was used for both the prototype and production run. Nearly all units have uneven anodization around the sides as a band that goes around the entire case. Some units have minor streaking from acid etch. We are hesitant on having the factory fix these so we will be paying for these and offering them as B stock at heavily discounted prices.

For the 50 original customers who are in the group buy, we will be manufacturing new cases for everyone. We have another factory which has been used to manufacture custom keyboards before and will organize another batch of cases to be produced. As the 7 series alloy has proven to be difficult to anodize, both by the factories that have been used before and by other makers who have used it in their products, we will switch to either a 6 series or 5 series alloy depending on price, quality and availability.

As with manufacturing, we will be running the new factory through the paces as with a brand new product being manufactured in a brand new factory. Although they have made other high end custom keyboard kits before, we will still be doing a handful of pre-production pieces for quality assurance and will be discussing expectations with them. We believe that this will take a significant amount of time, but we are still on track for the original Q1/Q2 2019 ship date as we were quite far ahead of schedule with the current (now b-stock) units.

Assembly has started for the PCBs and should wrap up shortly. They should arrive close to the end of this month and made available with b-stock cases. Extra A and B stock from the current factory will be available on a first come, first serve basis. If you would like a notification for these, please fill out the form below.

Yes, it's only the anodizing that's affected. Machining is perfect on these.

If you want to do a powdercoat, keep in mind the thickness of the powdercoat. Masking the switch cutouts is mandatory. Masking the faces that are hidden when the case is together is reccomended depending on the thickness of the powdercoat.

Cerakoate on the other hand is very thin, though for that, masking the switch cutouts is still recommended.

Yep. The proto had flawless anodization. Not sure what happened between then and now, but it wasn't in my control and was something that could only have been seen after anodization.

Nevertheless, everyone in the GB paid full price for these kits and I believe that everyone who has done that should receive a product that's representative of that.

Not yet. I'll probably have one when they arrive.

For now, some pics of a case that is relatively ok.

I haven't had the chance to send out an email yet, but you'll have the option to either take one from the current run or one from the new run if you are part of the original GB. I can't gauarante that I will have any, if at all perfect ones in 7075 as the issue stems from the material that was used, but I'll try my best to make things work for everyone.

Whelp this is unfortunate news. I personally am not married to the idea of 7075, but it was nice. Is there a chance that if we opt for the newer version that we receive a refund for the difference in material costs?

I'd love to pick up a B-stock and have it cerakoted, but wouldn't masking off the switch cutouts be incredibly difficult?

Just a few moments ago I was talking to a guy who runs a private gun shop here in Croatia. I told him I'll have a piece of aluminium 7075 about 35 cm long with stains from a screwed up anodization proccess that I would like to cerakote, and I wanted to know what does he think will this work out (so far he was only doing guns in his cerkatoe oven).

He said, yeah, absolutely, just bring it here, no problems.

Now... when it comes to masking. Total thickness of one layer of cerakote can vary anywhere between 0.0125 mm - 0.0255 mm.

My conclusion is this is well within switch plate tolerances and I won't be doing any masking whatsoever because it would not have any real benefit, everything should be perfectly fine just just the way it is.

If anybody is having any experience with cerakoting and thinks my decision is wrong, please warn me before it's too late.  :D

Lunar uses 0.1mm tolerances for lid-chassis fit, so Cerakote should be fine.
Powdercoat usually ranges in the 0.3mm thickness zone, so I'd advise against it.

What is the material difference between 6 series and 7 series aluminium? Does it affect heaviness, feel or durability?
7 series emphasizes hardness/durability and is marginally more heavy. Sound will be higher pitched.

5 series is a softer alloy. Anodizes more easily and more evenly. Sound will be lower pitched.

6 series is a middle-of-the-road kinda option. Feel will change very little, if at all because of the 4mm plate between the material options. In terms of price, switching between each alloy shouldn't affect price very much if at all since I saw a difference of around 3 dollars per unit going from 6 to 7 series in the initial run of lunar.

I'd definitely would like to make sure I get the 7075, it was the selling point for me.

I am personally not interested in alu 6 as we paid for 7. Please make thr current a and b stock available to original buyers first andngive us better photos.

Fcfs is unfair imo.

We already bought switches, keycaps etc...

If you opt for the newer option, I can try and see how much material costs differ. From the current run, the cost difference was minimal and it is a lot of work to refund and keep track of small refunds that are only a dollar or two.

I also don't have a quote from the new factory yet. I need to get that sorted out first before I put extras up and what not.

Okay, so basically I won't feel that much of a change from 7 series to 6 series if I am not that sensitive and/or know well about the aluminium. Yeah I don't want to do re-ano or cerakote(I don't even know how to or who to ask) so do what you have to do, just make sure the finished product is up to your original goals.

Notable differences here are sound and durability. Sound WILL be different. Not drastically different, but notable. Durability will be reduced. The 7 series units are tough as nails, though I'm not sure why someone would be dropping these on a concrete floor on a regular basis.
