Hello everyone this is the group buy page for the Canvas and Mahjong 65% left hand numpad keyboards. Google forms for orders are up NOW, and are posted here:

>>>HERE IS THE ORDER FORM TO FILL REMAINING SPOTS FROM OTHERS WHO LEFT THE MAHJONG GROUP BUY: CLOSED<<<

>>> Canvas Order Form: Closed not enough orders <<<

Forms will close once 50 Mahjong and 25 Canvas requests are in.
First group buy will ship in US only.
After forms close, I will send out Paypal Invoices giving a week to pay before I choose another person to take your spot.
Production will start once all orders are placed and will take ~3 Months before I receive them. (This is long because of the cornavirus's affects on manufacturing around the world)
Once I receive them I will upload firmware and test each one and should send them out within the month.

Estimate production start Date: June 6, 2020
Estimated Ship Date: August 1, 2020

UPDATES

March 16, 2020 - Orders for Mahjong Hi-profile have hit 50; the form is closed for new submissions!
If you need to edit your order please PM me with the changes you would like!
I will try to send out Invoices this weekend, but may not get to them all because i'll be out of town for a day or two. I'll also try to get the Extra PCB's quoted this week; its looking like we'll get a pretty good quote because a decent amount of people put in for them. Updates will keep coming as I make progress.
Canvas Low-Pro is moving pretty slow, so i'll evaluate the interest in a week or so.

March 24, 2020 - I have already gotten a few messages about a request to delay the group buy due to the Corona-virus affecting almost all business in the world. An email has been sent with a form to all people in the Mahjong GB: Proposing a delay for invoices to be released until April 17th at the earliest.
Thanks All!

March 27, 2020 - I will be delaying the GB and checking back in around April 17th and seeing how everything is progressing with the virus; hopefully get a good estimate of when a good time to send out invoices would be. Anyone who will be dropping out due to the delay please send me a PM.
Mid April I will be putting another form up to collect extra entries to offset anyone who can no longer participate in the group buy.
Hope everyone is doing well!

April 24, 2020 - OK! it seems that everyone who contacted me in the past is doing better now and we should be able to continue with the Group buy; I will be sending out Invoices this weekend if there are no other reasons for delay!

April 26, 2020 - Invoices have been sent out today for the Mahjong! check your inbox/spam; if you can't find it and you think you are on the list, please send me a message with your email you used so i can check to see if you submitted an email with a typo.
All invoice recipients will have 10 days to pay from the day they receive the invoice; after the 10 days are up (Wednesday, May 6th)  I will put up another Google Form so I can fill any missing spots.

May 6, 2020 - A form has been posted to allow people to fill the spots of those who have cancelled for the Mahjong Group buy here: Closed, production will start once the required invoices have been paid.

June 1, 2020 - Good News Everyone! We have Hit MOQ and should be able to start production this weekend!
Through the week i'll be letting the remaining unpaid invoices complete their orders up until this weekend where we will start production with or without them!

June 14, 2020 -  CNC components (Top, Bottom, Emblem) have entered production and are set to be complete around July 10th.
Still to be ordred: Switch Plate, PCB's, & Fasteners
Thanks All!

June 14, 2020 -  PCB is now submitted for production; estimated received by July 24th.
Still to be ordred: Switch Plate,  & Fasteners

June 20, 2020 -  Major milestone: all parts have been put into production!!! Fasteners have already been received and everything seems to be going smooth.

July 17, 2020 - All parts have been received; sorting all the shipments and prepping to ship is the next big step! I built up 1 keyboard full and everything is working perfectly!
Pictures of the finished build here: https://imgur.com/a/ayCn2Z9

July 27, 2020 -  About 85% of the orders have shipped! A couple of the remaining orders have problems with addresses, and some others with quality issues which i will be talking to the supplier to fix!

October 23, 2020 - The last few boards are back from polishing and have been Shipped! GB should be complete once they receive their boards!

Yeah sorry about that, I'm hoping to keep this as simple as possible for the first run just in case there are any logistical issues, etc.

If you live in Greater Van/Lower mainland you can get it shipped to a place in Point Roberts; it's usually what I do for these kind of situations :/

Enjoy, friends.

I'm debating setting up a US address (using nyaddress.ca or similar) and making a stop over the border to pick up the package. I'd be okay with shipping packages to other Canadians if anyone else wanted to use the address as well, feel free to PM me if you're interested. I have a bunch of confirmed trades on r/mechmarket (same username), can verify that account is mine if needed.

Do I have to solder the hotswap sockets, or can I skip it and just go straight into soldering the switches onto the pcb? Also, what materials are the badge and plate made out of for the hipro version?

If you look at the Pcb photos from the ic thread, this doesn’t support soldering of switches directly. You need to solder the hot swap sockets.

PCB is hotswap socket only. Plate and emblem on the Hi-Pro are made out of brass.

Yes, im keeping this a flat rate just in case something happens (to the shipping prices) between now and shipping the keyboard. Most of the shipping cost comes from weight and package size and not too much on distance.

If you live in the Phoenix metro area I'd be happy to meet up somewhere and deliver it myself to take away the shipping cost.

The PCB manufacturer I'm using doesn't let input your own quantity of parts to order so the next step from 50 PCB's would be 75; though I do have control of how many are assembled. If not enough people want an extra PCB the cost to make those extras would be pretty high.

I'll give the option in the group buy, but before sending out the quote I would ask everyone who wanted an extra PCB if the quoted price for the extra PCB's is reasonable.

That makes sense. Hopefully there's enough interest for extra PCBs. If not, I'll pick one up during the next round of the GB (if there is one).

Looks like modifying your response will change your position so i would hold off on modifying it till after everything is set.

I turned off the function for now and will enable it later.

I'll look into it; have to find a good location for the text on the case then see if it is worth adding to the board (if it cost's almost nothing ill add it)

If Umio1 set up the Google Form correctly, there should be a limit of how many people can fill out the form. If you were able to fill it, in theory you should be good. When your order is done (ETA July 2020), Umio1 or whoever their manufacturer/distributer will send you an email through Paypal with a tracking number.

That's assuming it hits the MOQ or the total number of units set to be sold in this GB.

I think there are at least 2 main reasons why this GB is moving really slowly.

1. Self soldered hotswap sockets
2. Plate mounted stabs

Is there a number of orders that must be hit for this GB to proceed to manufacturing or will it proceed no matter the number of orders just with increased prices?

Yes this is correct.

Once I get all 50 orders, I'll send out Invoices through Paypal that will allow people to pay for their order. Once I get all payments I will complete the quote for production and provide updates on the actions as they happen.

Is there a big enough difference between Plate mount and PCB mount stabs other than the connection method?

I'll still be going ahead with the GB if we don't hit the 50, I wouldn't expect more than a $10 increase if anything were to happen (or I could allow a small amount of international orders: this would delay the production little bit). We're almost there though, only 10 more people till we hit 50 orders.

Plate mount is more unstable than PCB mount and hence produces more rattle. Also there are more choices of PCB mount stabs.

I saw your PCB layout. It can be hard to redesign it for PCB mount stabs around the USB port and the microcontroller.

When done correctly, the stabs aren't a big difference. But plates are harder to reach that threshold imo, and there's more variety of pcb stabs (C3, Zeal, gmk, cherry). Pcbs stabs also look nicer for the most part.

Nonetheless though, still 100% backing this project! The left-hand num pad is something there should be more of! And the price point of this board is supreme!

Yeah, when i was designing i was only thinking of using the plate mounted so there's lots of components under the space bar and backspace:

I'll rock GMK Darling on these babies, so happy the red colorway uses the same RAL number!
Nice, I'm thinking of going this route but not sure if I need to get other keys or not https://tinyurl.com/u8qll4g
You'll need a 1.75u right shift

Yep, The right shift is a 1.75U

Thanks All!

If someone drops out I will give some time notice before reopening the google form for someone to take the spot.

If everything goes well with this group buy I will create another for people that missed and internationals after this has ended.

You could stick with your set you found and buy an individual 1.75u, like from here:

Or, if you like the Nautilus colorway, you could get in on the GMK Nautilus round 2 group buy that's starting on April 2 instead of buying the Tai Hao copy that has much more limited compatibility:

March 24, 2020 - I have already gotten a few messages about a request to delay the group buy due to the Corona-virus affecting almost all business in the world. An email has been sent with a form to all people in the Mahjong GB: Proposing a delay for invoices to be released until April 17th at the earliest.
Thanks All!

The group buy will probably be canceled for the low-Pro if not enough people are interested; it may be hard to get people in right now due to a lot of people being financially affected by everything happening in the world. Most likely will be another run of the hi-pro after this first run is complete.

I will try to work on getting some other PCB designs done in the meantime as possible add-ons/files released to github (PCB mount stabs/non-hotswap board); though i cannot guarantee these will be done anytime soon as they are major changes to the PCB's design. These would most likely not be part of this initial group buy.

All invoice recipients will have 10 days to pay from the day they receive the invoice; after the 10 days are up (Wednesday, May 6th)  I will put up another Google Form so I can fill any missing spots.

All the plates just came in and everything is fitting perfectly; the picture doesn't do it justice, but i think everyone will be really happy with how these turned out!

Now just to wait for the PCB's

I'm probably part of the 15% but if I recall correctly the google form didn't include an address input, would you be using the address from PayPal instead? This wouldn't work in my case since my PayPal address is in Canada where as I planed on having it shipped to my brother in the US (seeing as this GB was US only). Should I expect an email or something?

EDIT: Lol, just checked my junk mail... and it's in there :P replied thanks!

This is basically just the standard Kailh hot swap sockets. So any switch that work with them works here.

This uses plate mounted stabs

Well, I fell for it.  Somehow I missed that while this is a hotswap PCB, we have to solder those hotswap sockets in ourselves.  It never even occurred to me that someone would run a GB like that.

Given that Umio set the GB at an amazing price with shipping included, soldering the sockets are not bad at all. They're easier mill max imo.

Soldering the hotswap sockets is very easy, i can post a tutorial video for people who are concerned or do not have previous solder experience.
If you've had a non-hotswap PCB where you solder the switches in, it should be pretty trivial.

If you're shipping more of these, you might want to consider putting the sockets in something other than those plastic strips.  About half of mine were loose in the box when it got here.

Got my Mahjong in today! Everything arrived in great shape, well packaged (Thanks Umio1!), & the build was a very easy one. The only thing I have yet to figure out is how to reprogram it. In the OP Umio1 said to use the https://kbfirmware.com/ (https://kbfirmware.com/) site to do it, but there is no preset layout for the Mahjong yet. Umio1, can I just make a json with the same layout in KLE then import it to the site for reprogramming mine or will that not work?

The video would be nice, but I think I could probably work from written steps as well.

What is the best way to solder hotswaps? Tin the contacts on the PCB, seat a socket and then heat to reflow? Or seat the socket, then solder?

Here is an example of soldering them without pretinning. Simply touch between the pad and the socket contact and add solder: similar to a through-hole but a bit tighter.

In the parts bag there should be 4 double sided VHB tape strips (the same used to hold car emblems on; you should only need 3 but I included an extra).

1. Undo one side of the tape strip and press it onto the cut-out circle of the bottom case (repeat 3 times)
2. remove the backing of the 3 tape strips
3. align the emblem and press it onto the tape strips

note: once you press the emblem in it will be near impossible to get out

no pad tinning required

1. apply flux to the pads if you have it
2. seat the socket making sure it does not block any threw-holes
3. press the soldering iron against the pad/socket metal
4. apply solder

How do you flash this puppy anyhow? I've never done one that isn't loaded up in QMK.
I grabbed the .json, mapped the keys and exported the .hex. Is this the part where you load it into the toolbox? Cause I don't have any HID recognized.

yep, you'll want to have QMK toolbox and upload the file "flash".
QMK Toolbox will only recognize the micro-controller once you hit the reset button on the bottom of the PCB.

It refers to writing the flash memory in the microcontroller on the board. In this case, we build a custom firmware using a codebase called QMK and write that to the keyboard. This is so you can define custom macros or any other behavior or just redefine the key mapping.

I programmed all the boards so you shouldn't have to worry about anything software wise unless you want to add some more functionality when you press the FN key.
or you want to adjust a lot of the layout.

Theyre M2 screws, a quick search says a 1.5mm hex is the recommended size; i just kept trying different sizes until i found the largest one that fit.

I'll see if I can get hold of that hex key. Would have been better if you had designed it with either 1 or 2 screw types and philips head would have been preferred.

Also like mentioned earlier, putting the hotswap sockets in a bag would be better than leaving it in the packaging strip as they can come out of the strip during shipping.

Other than that, no other big issues. Thanks for organising the GB.

Finally got the board from usps! i don't think the smallest screws (plate to top) are 1.5mm, they're super small and i'm trying to find a keyset for them. The M2 screws for the bottom piece are 1.5mm. I wish these were phillips lmao, hate hex

Yep. The 3 sizes you need are 2.5, 1.5 and 1mm hex keys.

Also noted a design issue. Vertical stabs should have the switch rotated 90 degrees so that it can lock into the plate. The current design means that if your keycap is too tight, it will pull the switch out from the plate.

Quick update: There were more problems with the first batch of remade parts they sent, most specifically the plain metal bottom's; they came in unsmoothed

you can see the difference between the first and second batch: (https://i.imgur.com/mwxB0Rk.jpg)

Also 2 black tops came with paint missing where they hung them for curing.
I should get a response on these moday!

Got mine in over the weekend! Everything looked great except for a small chip or missing paint. Maybe its where they hung it, too. It's small enough that I can just touch it up with paint, I think. Thanks for the GB! Are you going to have B/C-Stocks of cases/plates/pcbs?

Is yours on the mating surface? I tried to make sure there were no visible defects when assembled.
Yeah i'll have a couple extra defective/unfinished bottoms and tops that I can't really do anything with for people to do their own finishing. not sure how I would select people though.

It’ll prob be covered up and not seen during use. It’s very tiny, gonna grab the closest green car touch-up paint at the store whenever I’m out next time. Should make it invisible.

EDIT: pic is rotated 90deg CCW, no idea why it's rotated since it looks different on my phone.

Maybe use a raffle for b/c stock that are full-kits? The piece parts are likely harder as you’re only pool are people who already own it. Personally, I’m interested in (2) plates and (1) top+bottom piece.

I had a small chip, but mine was on the bottom side thankfully. Also some splotching around the screw holes, but again nothing visible when built. Just waiting on a few more things and I can finally build my first custom!

Yeah, I wasn't worried if there was anything around the inner mating surface/screw holes as that wouldn't be shown and could have been left unpainted.

I'm addressing all the small scratches/dents with the supplier, im not sure how I didn't catch them.
Thanks for the notices!

Not sure if this was mentioned earlier (I didn't read previous posts), but one critique on the PCB is that the "+" and Enter keys on the numpad have their switch sockets in the regular orientation, which makes it a bit tricky to remove them with your regular switch puller; I just ended up using some tweezers. Typically, this is addressed by turning the sockets by 90 degrees. Not a big issue, but just something to consider if you decide to do a revision 2.

This is most likely the cause; since all of those keys are connected on the same column, its likely that one of the diodes is not present, not fully soldered to one of the pads, or one could be dead.

Reheating the pads or adding a little bit of extra solder to the diodes in that column should fix it.

I'm still working on the 3 smoothed bottom parts. The supplier is willing to pay for them to be smoothed here but im having trouble finding a place thats willing to do the work, i'll be calling around this week.
i have all the black tops in perfect condition so those are read.
And there are 2 white tops that have chips that i am working on getting a fix as well.

you can use this to create your layout or just to view the rows/columns: https://kbfirmware.com/
here is a link to the currently uploaded hex file, and the Json file I used to create the hex file through the above link: https://github.com/Neil-de-grass-eating-Bisson/Canvas-Mahjong-Keyboards/tree/master/Mahjong%20Firmware
Upload the Json to KBfirmware.com and everything you need to adjust should be there.
reset button on the bottom of the PCB will get rid of the current program.
Use QMK Toolbox to upload the created hex file into the board when its connected via usb.

I'm getting a "dfu-programmer: no device present" error when trying to flash :( Recognizes it when I hit the reset button, but flash doesn't stick.

EDIT: All good now! Love this thing. Came with a lil chip of paint like some others, but it was on the inner portion of the bottom plate so no problem.

That switch issue could be due to the switch, or loose contacts in the hotswap socket. Have you tried swapping that switch with another that you know works?

Yep, most likely a hotswap socket has a loose connection, could test this by "faking" a switch press by touching a paper clip to the 2 contacts and see if it types

Is there any way to modify the layout with QMK Configurator vs KBFirmware?

Yes just download the Json File I provide here:https://github.com/Neil-de-grass-eating-Bisson/Canvas-Mahjong-Keyboards/tree/master/Mahjong%20Firmware (https://github.com/Neil-de-grass-eating-Bisson/Canvas-Mahjong-Keyboards/tree/master/Mahjong%20Firmware)

Upload it to https://kbfirmware.com/ (https://kbfirmware.com/) and you should be able to adjust the key layout and function layers.

Then you can use QMK configurator to upload the .Hex file you created to the keyboard.

Wonderful!
The guy who polished them recommended if you ever get scratches get yourself a container of "Blue Magic metal polish cream" and wipe it with an old t-shirt.
Excited to see how it looks!

Borrowed these caps from my TKL for now. And please excuse the photo quality, just took a quick snap right after building it.

Oh I was talking about creating the .hex with QMK configurator instead of Kbfirmware. I feel the interface is slightly more flexible.

I need a new PCB. 23-26 are not working.

Check the diodes right under the socket holes. Mine had one missing. Had to jerryrig a throughhole diode to actually test the PCB and it works. I don't know what vendor assembled these PCBs but yikes.

Hi, I still haven't finished the keyboard because of 23-26 still not working. I think the diodes are dead. Where can I buy some extra diodes? Also, I need a couple more hot-swap sockets.

I'll ship you some diodes and hot-swap sockets as soon as I get back from my business trip no problem at all! estimated amount you need?

I probably need 8 of each. I will probably need some help once I get them. Just want to make sure that I am doing what I need to do. Also, another one of my switches only works sometimes and I need help with that. Thank you so much.

Diodes and Sockets have been mailed!

I just replaced the diode on 23 and 23-26 is still not working. I don't believe I am doing this wrong. If you could text me at 863-670-4347 and we could talk about it. That would be much appreciated.

These are fantastic, do you still have a spare PCB or two? Otherwise, since they are open source would it be okay if no PCBs are available if I used a service like PCBway to order one?

I only have PCB's that are unpopulated left, i dont think it will be easy to solder the hybrid USB-c connectors though; but yeah, i put everything out so people could buy their own if they really wanted to or modify anything about it.
